  • Off-grid farm site with stunning countryside views
  • A 25-minute drive from Thornill and 45 minutes from Dumfries
  • Fishing, compost toilets and dog-friendly pond
Is your idea of heaven an eco-friendly off-grid getaway... with spectacular countryside views, lots of space to spread out and warm welcomes for the whole family? Make your way to Heavenly Campsite, a family- and dog-friendly site less than 10 minutes’ drive from Moniaive in Dumfries and Galloway. The site’s in a pretty spot, taking up a few acres of farming land 20 minutes from the edge of Galloway Forest Park, where there are walks and drives aplenty, scenic lochs, lots of wildlife and the Wild Goat Park. Galloway Forest was also the first Dark Sky Park in the UK, so be sure to pack a blanket or some camp chairs for added comfort while gazing at the stars. Dogs will be particularly chuffed with stays here as there’s a small freshwater pond on site that they’re more than welcome to splash about in – and owners will be best pleased by the lashings of space that’ll give furry friends room to dry off before sharing small spaces overnight. Anyone angling for peaceful hols? A river passes by the site, so settle down on a slice of riverbank, cast a line and spend a leisurely afternoon in quiet contemplation while waiting for something to bite. Barbecues and campfires are welcome on site too, so lucky catches can be cooked up in no time (and there’s a restaurant in Moniaive if attempts are unsuccessful). Do be prepared: this is a back to basics site, so amenities are limited – though there are compost toilets for guests’ use.

Local attractions

Foodies left short by lack of fishing success should make immediate tracks for Castle Douglas, a 35-minute drive from base: the town’s a food haven, with plenty of top notch restaurants, regular food fairs, food weekends and chef masterclasses. Once appetites are satisfied, it’s a swift jaunt from the site to the town of Thornhill, 25 minutes away and where guests will get their first taste of one of Scotland’s most anticipated sights: a castle. Well, two actually… Morton and Drumlanrig castles are both a few miles outside of the town (both within 35 minutes of base), and the latter in particular is a must-visit for TV addicts who may recognise it from Outlander. Rabbie Burns is also deserving of some very Scottish attention – the national poet of Scotland, Burns is celebrated every year with renditions of 'To the Haggis' around the world, and visits to his house in nearby Dumfries (45 minutes) come highly recommended. For something a little more unexpected, time stays almost to the second so as not to miss the Garden of Cosmic Speculation, open half an hour away for just one day per year.
