  • Family-friendly park with spectacular Solway Firth views
  • Kids' and teens' clubs, soft play, amusements and outdoor playgrounds
  • Showbar, bar-restaurant, takeaway and 25-metre indoor pool with flume
Northerners, fear not: southern-ness is not a prerequisite to enjoyment of a stay at Southerness Holiday Park at the foot of the Galloway Hills; the superb sea views and great facilities on site should please all comers. The pitches at this family-friendly park look out over the windswept beauty of the Solway Firth towards the English Lake District; and the surrounding countryside is teeming with wildlife, from the tiny creatures that inhabit the rockpools on the neighbouring beach to the great stags stalking the Galloway Forest Park further inland. Amphibian admirers will be interested to know too that the site is next door to Scotland’s largest breeding colony of Natterjack toads… When it comes to your own wee beasties, Southerness serves up a generous dollop of fun for kids too: buzzing clubs catering for the very small to hulking teens; an indoor pool, a flume, fountains and toddler pool (and a Jacuzzi for the grownups); a soft play area; crazy golf; amusements; outdoor playgrounds – plus of course the lively schedule of evening entertainment for the whole family in the Sunset Showbar. There’s a good choice of menu options in the bar-restaurant, as well as fresh Costa coffee; or you can opt for a takeaway if you just want to chill out in your own space and admire the views. There’s free wifi in designated areas of the site.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Friendly and helpful staff.
Affordable activities for young children and the pool area.

Disliked The site is looking run-down.
When we arrived at our pitch someone had let their dog mess on the grass. A trip back to reception this was soon resolved.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The feel of the park, good facilities and location.

Disliked The toilets and shower block were constantly filthy. No toilet paper, blocked toileted, horrible smell and basically very unhygienic. Probably wouldn’t book again due to this.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Not a lot, old and outdated site

Disliked Gents toilets in the touring area are in need of some repair work, the laundrette was poor with 2 machines out of order and no clear instructions on their use, the ironing boards are useless (just remove them and improve the look of the place 10x!) the pitches aren't easy to identify (just put the numbers on the hook up points, also make them out to stop people taking up too much space.

The pitches are crammed in with not an inch between the next one.

Kids riding bikes around the grass area and smashing into guy lines all over the place.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Restaurants, entertainment complex & onsite supermarket all good, clean and well stocked with reasonable pricing.
All staff were super friendly and the swimming pool guards were great fun with the kids (and adults too).
Beach was lovely and 19th Hole bar with live music most days was lovely given how remote the location is.

Disliked Toilets were disgusting. Drains blocked up, toilets piled wiht loo roll and poo. Instead of cleaning, the cubicle doors were just locked so you couldn't use them. ON two occasions there was just 1 toilet in the ladies bathroom for the entire evening and morning. Ran out of toilet roll most nights. Would be better to have separate toilets for the campers and the motorhome/tourer users as they were left absolutely vile every afternoon, to the point we went to the restaurant to use them instead. They need more regular cleaning when the site is so full and busy.

Cost of activity clubs was a lot (£10 p/30 min session) when you have 3 kids that adds up quickly across a weeks stay.
No WiFi in the camping/touring area at all.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Large Caravan Park with mixture of tents, motorhomes, caravans and statics. Showers/toilets near touring pitches. Onsite shop.

Disliked Although showers were clean the ladies toilets were disgusting. No toilet paper, unflushed toilets, water on counters, toilet paper on the floor. Couldn't book pool, told it was fully booked but walkins were allowed? Great for a family with young children not much for older children/mature couples. Dogs allowed foul on grass near touring pitches where young were playing. Free WIFI but only in the reception/Hub or statics. Pack provided did not give full information only QR codes to scan for details.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Area and beach friendly local bar.

Disliked Put off as soon as we arrive abit late but on time to be the misrule receptionist. Let it go as it was late but next went back to as for gas refill but again same helpless attitude. We got pitched good sleep. The next morning thinknrheres 6 toilet yet was.onky to with locks on the doors told cleaner the following day he says been asking for ages . The following day waste discharge point not working also.had been reported and not fixed. Then to top all the weekend off the grass cutter came to cut the grass driving straight over the pebbled pitch casing stones to fly everywhere damaging cars and cracking lights on caravans . Which the driver denied all doing case on going certainly wont be revisiting. 😡

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The camp ground was easily accessible, close to toilets and showers and the play park.
Plenty of accessible.water supply and good facilities.for washing up.
Laundrette was 4.50 per load of washing and 2.50 per tumble.dryer. which is pretty standard.
Mixture.of different entertainments at the complex available to suit everyone.
Very close to the beach
Plenty to do on site if you don't want to leave.

Disliked No flood lighting on camping pitches very dark when going to the toilet at night.
Toilets don't flush well so are very dirty at night after the cleaners have left.
No where on site sold vegan ice cream for my son and there was very few options for my mum. People with allergies are very limited in their options.
Was very had to get a space for swimming bookings were full and only a few spaces available.for walk in.
All the extra activities, like aqua jets were aimed at younger children particularly under 7's which was difficult with the range of ages of our children.
The shop stocks a wide range of things but is not the cheapest. We had to go to the village to look for a disposable bbq.

Local attractions

Assuming the weather is kind, the area surrounding Southerness Holiday Park is tiptop for anyone looking for an active holiday; do your own thing or shake off the cobwebs and try something new at one of the excellent activity centres in the Dumfries and Galloway region. Golfers are in for a particular treat, given the enormous choice of excellent courses nearby (the closest championship course is on the doorstep, in Southerness). If you fancy getting out and about, there’s a plethora of attractions to choose from: tickle your taste buds with a trip to the Cocoa Bean Factory or nearby ice cream factory; rattle around on the barrel train at Mabie Farm Park, a great value attraction packed with activities to keep the kids entranced all day; ramble around the romantic ruins of Sweetheart Abbey; clamber around a couple of castles, or visit the Robert Burns Centre in Dumfries. Or you could head to one of Dumfries and Galloway’s 'themed' towns: Wigtown for bookish types, Castle Douglas for foodies, or the artists’ town of Kirkcudbright.
