General

  • Small family-run park two miles from Whithorn and five from beaches
  • Walking, cycling, birdwatching and several golf courses in the area
  • Spacious site with plenty of room for children to play

Red kites, red deer, sandy beaches and countryside of the unspoiled variety are the flavour of Scottish county Dumfries and Galloway – and it's all very much the same at family- and dog-friendly Castlewigg Caravan Park.

This is a small but spacious site with plenty of playing room for the sprogs, two miles from the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland, Whithorn, and 16 miles from Newton Stewart. It's a popular park with peeps looking for a rural base to take in the outdoor activities of the region, with quite a few first-rate golf courses on offer in the area too. Toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a launderette are all on site.

If you've arrived on foot/by bus or want to leave the car/motorhome behind for a day, a wave-down bus service stops just outside the park for picking up and dropping off.

Brilliant clean facilities - we had a midweek stay booked so only sharing with one other couple but I imagine on a weekend it could be quite busy. We left a night earlier as we were on a road trip throughout Scotland and our plans changed and the lovely gentleman at reception insisted on refunding our final nights stay. There is an information room which is open all the time and filled floor to ceiling with leaflets and brochures of local attractions which is great (you can pick up WiFi in here aswell to book any activities). Great access for all the cycle trails (Kirroughtree was our favourite and most suitable for our 7 year old). Wonderful local sandy beach at Garlieston is only a short car ride away and the main centre in Newton Stewart was around a 15 minute drive. Lovely site and we would definitely return.

    Disliked:

The facilities do need updating (as there is only one shower cubicle in the gents and one in the ladies) but they are impeccably clean and the more people book the more the site will be able to invest in upgrading them!

From the manager...

Thank you for the very kind review and glad you all enjoyed your stay with us at Castlewigg. It was good to see you got out and about enjoying the local area with the children, unfortunately now most young ones just seem to sit around on their phone/computer and have no interest in the local area.
We note your comments on the toilet/shower block and can confirm this is one of the areas we have prioritised for the next phase of improvements. Hope to see you again very soon. Keith

The owners were fanatastic and very friendly. Pitches are a good size with power/water near by. Recommend to anyone who likes the chilled out quiet life.

Directions

At the Newton Stewart roundabout on the A75, if you are coming from East to West, take the first exit, heading south on the A714 for the Isle of Whithorn. After approximately 8 miles, turn right (150 yards after the sign for Castlewigg) onto the B7005 at the Wigtown bypass and arriving at the Bladnoch bridge. The Bladnoch area is also the home of the Bladnoch Distillery, the lowest working distillery in Scotland.

On crossing the bridge, you are again on the A714 and still heading now for Braehead and then into Kirkinner. As you approach Braehead, the A714 changes to the A746. Carry on through the 2 villages and up the hill and as you turn right, the road has a V in it, so keep right and carry on through Kilsture Forest and then into Sorbie. Continue on the A746 from Sorbie (you are around 3 miles away); there is another signpost 150 yards from the park.

Local attractions

So so much to do in Dumfries and the area around Castlewigg Caravan Park, from watching red kites feed at the feeding station in Laurieston to hoofing it around the restaurants of Newton Stewart.

Whithorn a couple of miles away is a place of pilgrimage for many as it was the location of Scotland's first recorded Christian church, built by St Ninian around 397AD. Visit the St Ninian's Priory and its visitor centre in Whithorn, or the St Ninian's Cave and the chapel in Isle of Whithorn, both a few miles from town.

Then to Newton Stewart, named as the gateway to the Galloway Hills, where nature types can wander the Red Deer Range in Galloway Forest Park, adjacent to the Galloway Wild Goat Park. Restaurants and a swimming pool are in town.

If you're taking the car out, some spectacular drives can be had through the hills along to Loch Ken and into Castle Douglas, stopping off at the Red Kite Feeding Station along the way.
