Burrowhead Holiday Village: Touring field has stunning views

General

  • Spacious parkland with views over the Solway Firth and Lake District
  • Jacuzzi, sauna, café, bar, crazy golf and play area
  • Close to Scotland's most southerly golf course

Ever seen the film The Wicker Man? If at any point you found yourself admiring the stunning Scottish scenery among the sense of impending celluloid doom (understandable), you'll probably be interested to know that the scenic setting in question was the village of Burrowhead on the Solway Firth.

And in Burrowhead is Burrowhead Holiday Village, a park in this scenic setting that's in a spacious hundred acres of parkland with views over the Solway Firth to the Isle of Man and the hills of the Lake District. This is activity land – sea fishing, golf and coastal walks are all very close to hand – and there's space to chill out back on site too as Burrowhead has a Jacuzzi and a sauna.

Let the kids loose at the play area, crazy golf, amusement arcade, soft play area, ball pool playroom and toddler splash pool with slide; the park also has pitch and putt golf, a putting green, a snooker room with licensed bar, and an adults-only function room.

A shop is there if you want to buy food and fire up your own cooker, but if not, Burrowhead Holiday Village has a well-priced café serving big breakfasts and other meals. Drinks and entertainment are sorted at the Headland family bar, which also has free wifi.

Burrowhead Holiday Village has a private water supply and they recommend that guests boil the water before consumption. Dogs are welcome on site but won't be allowed in the amenity buildings.

Please note

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/07 and 31/08 (subject to weather conditions).

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site has a private water supply - it's recommend that you boil the water before consumption.

The site is easy to get to, and the views are spectacular. I only stayed overnight on one of their sea view tent pitches, so didn’t get to explore as much as I would have liked, but there is a truly picturesque coastal path walk running by the site perimeter, and on a clear day, like I enjoyed, you can see the Isle of Man and the hills of Cumbria across the Irish Sea. There are all the facilities you would expect to find in a holiday village, with a clean shower / toilet block, a small shop for essentials, a cafe and a bar. The cafe and bar are only open at set times, so be sure to check the board. The permanent residents in their caravans and chalets seem to be a pleasant bunch. I was touring on a motorcycle, and a few of them wanted to chat about the bike and the tiny 1-person tent I was using. The site is incredibly peaceful, and the loudest noises you can hear are the waves crashing on the shore, the breeze coming in off the sea, and the sound of cattle on nearby hills. If you’re looking for a restful location, this is it.

    Disliked:

Being hyper-critical, I would suggest that there are only three things to be conscious of. Firstly, there are signs up saying that water from the plentiful standpipes is recommended to be boiled before consumption. This didn’t bother me as I was boiling the water anyway for tea / coffee, etc., but is something to be aware of. Secondly, telephone reception is non-existent, and Wi-fi is limited to the cafe and bar areas. Frankly, some people will consider that to be a plus, but it was problematic for me to be unreachable by my family while I was by the tent, or walking around. A few Wi-fi extenders across the site in key areas would sort that out. Thirdly, it’s a big site, and it’s a bit of a trek to get to the toilet / shower block from some parts. Totally fine most of the time, but when you wake up at 3am and have to take the walk, it’s not fun. The path is lit well enough, and I understand why there’s one main block, but I would suggest that with the space available, a secondary block would be beneficial. All that said, I would recommend this site, and I’ll happily book again if they’d have me.

Local attractions

If you're up for some angling, cast off from rocks, boats or loch near Burrowhead Holiday Village; fishing off the rocks is allowed at the Burrowhead coast and at the local beaches.

This is top birdwatching territory too, so look out/up for birds when you're around this part of coast, and it's prime dark skies land for stargazing afterwards.

Popular attractions in the area are Bladnoch Distillery, Galloway Forest Park, the book town of Wigtown and the Cream o' Galloway amusement park and dairy farm producing topping ice cream.

Nearby Whithorn is where Christianity in Scotland evolved under the leadership of St Ninian; the Whithorn Story Visitor Centre and St Ninian's Cave are the main tourist draws.

Other nearby days out could include the 75 acres of child-friendly Castle Kennedy Gardens; a look at the inhabitants of Logan Fish Pond and of Monreith Animal World, and the zipwire, Segway and more at the activity centre of Laggan Outdoor.

Finally, the port of Stranraer is about 30 miles away: sail to Larne in Northern Ireland from here and drive along the coast to have a day in Belfast.
