Burrowhead Holiday Village: Touring field has stunning views

General

  • Spacious parkland with views over the Solway Firth and Lake District
  • Pools, Jacuzzi, sauna, café, bar and free wifi
  • Close to Scotland's most southerly golf course

Ever seen the film The Wicker Man? If at any point you found yourself admiring the stunning Scottish scenery among the sense of impending celluloid doom (understandable), you'll probably be interested to know that the scenic setting in question was the village of Burrowhead on the Solway Firth.

And in Burrowhead is Burrowhead Holiday Village, a park in this scenic setting that's in a spacious hundred acres of parkland with views over the Solway Firth to the Isle of Man and the hills of the Lake District. This is activity land – sea fishing, golf and coastal walks are all very close to hand – and there's plenty to do on site too as Burrowhead has an indoor and a summer outdoor pool, a Jacuzzi and a sauna.

Let the kids loose at the play area, crazy golf, amusement arcade, soft play area, ball pool playroom and toddler splash pool with slide; the park also has pitch and putt golf, a putting green, a snooker room with licensed bar, and an adults-only function room.

A shop is there if you want to buy food and fire up your own cooker, but if not, Burrowhead Holiday Village has a well-priced café serving big breakfasts and other meals. Drinks and entertainment are sorted at the Headland family bar, which also has free wifi.

Burrowhead Holiday Village has a private water supply and they recommend that guests boil the water before consumption.

Please note dogs or pets are not permitted in The Old Peat House guest room, but are welcome on the main site for a small fee.

Please note

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/07 and 31/08 (subject to weather conditions).

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site has a private water supply - it's recommend that you boil the water before consumption.

Great facilities clean and large shower cubicles. Lovely pitch and as I requested with a sea view. The site was wonderfully quiet , and had immediate access to walks along the cliff path so great for the dog. People were very friendly and we had a very enjoyable stay. They were very organized on arrival with a folder for us and pitch number allotted. The covid preparations were excellent.

    Disliked:

We couldn't get Wi-Fi in the bar to work. the password could only be gained when the bar was open, which seemed unnecessary, couldn't we have been given it on arrival? The young lass staffing it couldn't help.

The views and scenery were unbelievable! There was a large variety of tent picked to choose from which allowed a variation of different views to be chosen from. The on-site pub had a good choice of beer and spirits and was very lively and fun. The women in the office was very helpful and dealt with situations in a quick and professional manner. The bathrooms and shower room was very clean and had good COVID precautions in place.

    Disliked:

There is no service and slow WiFi in the pub, however this is a positive for a weekend off the grid.

View from our pitch was great. Toilets and showers were very clean. Cafe food was good and reasonably priced.

The old caravans around the site are not very appealing.

From the manager...

Hi there, Thank you for writing an honest review. We are slowly scrapping the older caravans and this will improve the overall look of the site over the next couple of seasons. I am pleased you note the cleanliness as this is of the utmost importance to us in these pandemic times! We hope to welcome you back again soon. Regards

First class site and worth the drive.07/06/2021

From check in to pitching tent everything was first class, the lady in reception made me feel a valued customer and explained everything to me. The layout of the site is easy to navigate with the site map, the pitch area was flat and well maintained with the hook up post already unlocked for my arrival. The view is stunning and well worth the journey. The toilet/shower block is not new but is spotless and well set up for Covid awareness. The bar and shop staff again were welcoming and happy to assist. Unfortunately I had to leave early but this does not take away the fact that I rate this holiday break as a 5 star.
I also liked the fact that with not having a WiFi signal meant complete peace and quiet from my normal job.
    Burrowhead deserves my 5 stars.

Very uneven ground for pitches and could do with toilet block for tent area

From the manager...

Hi there,
I am glad to hear you enjoyed your stay with us. The toilet block is closer to touring area A and a bit of a walk from touring area B although these pitches do get the most stunning views over the Isle of Man. It's a tough decision to make! I hope you'll join us again in the future and if you would prefer to be closer to the toilet and shower facilities - please let us know ahead of your arrival and i shall do my utmost to accommodate this.

Local attractions

If you're up for some angling, cast off from rocks, boats or loch near Burrowhead Holiday Village; fishing off the rocks is allowed at the Burrowhead coast and at the local beaches.

This is top birdwatching territory too, so look out/up for birds when you're around this part of coast, and it's prime dark skies land for stargazing afterwards.

Popular attractions in the area are Bladnoch Distillery, Galloway Forest Park, the book town of Wigtown and the Cream o' Galloway amusement park and dairy farm producing topping ice cream.

Nearby Whithorn is where Christianity in Scotland evolved under the leadership of St Ninian; the Whithorn Story Visitor Centre and St Ninian's Cave are the main tourist draws.

Other nearby days out could include the 75 acres of child-friendly Castle Kennedy Gardens; a look at the inhabitants of Logan Fish Pond and of Monreith Animal World, and the zipwire, Segway and more at the activity centre of Laggan Outdoor.

Finally, the port of Stranraer is about 30 miles away: sail to Larne in Northern Ireland from here and drive along the coast to have a day in Belfast.
