Stunning views

  • Spacious parkland with views over the Solway Firth and Lake District
  • A 20-minute drive from Scotland's most southerly golf course
  • Play area, arcade and miniature golf on site
Ever seen the film The Wicker Man? If at any point you found yourself admiring the stunning Scottish scenery among the sense of impending celluloid doom (understandable), you'll probably be interested to know that the scenic setting in question was the village of Burrowhead on the Solway Firth. And in Burrowhead is Burrowhead Holiday Village, a scenic park that has one hundred acres of parkland with views over the Solway Firth to the Isle of Man and the hills of the Lake District. This is activity land – sea fishing, golf and coastal walks are all very close to hand. If you're at the site during high season, you will also have the chance to descend upon the gorgeous outdoor pool, where there is a toddlers' splash pool with a small waterslide. At all other times of the year, let the kids loose at the play area, crazy golf, amusement arcade, soft play area and ball pool playroom; the park also has miniature golf, a putting green, a snooker room and an adults-only function room. Basic provisions are available at the Burrowhead Holiday Village reception. Burrowhead Holiday Village has a private water supply, so they recommend that guests boil water before consumption. Dogs are welcome on site.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Clean, lots to do, beautiful surroundings.

Disliked We were in area B and no toilet block there. Unfortunately it was extremely windy and this area is not sheltered at all so had to leave early. We didn't have much space to set up as the pitch beside us had 3 tents and 4 cars, and we were between this and a small caravan. We heard the family discussing how they had been urinating at the back of their tent until we arrived.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Staff helpful, outdoor pool cool but good, park and soft play good also. I really enjoyed my stay.

Disliked Private water source. Had to buy bottled water.
Also pitch was beside to fenced of tackle building but I was close to the toilet like I asked for so it balanced out.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Size of the pitches were superb. Plenty space and close to the toilet/cleaning block. Bar area was great and the staff were really good with the kids. There was a couple from Newcastle I think doing entertainment who were superb. Area was really nice with great walks available.

Disliked Cafe options and staff were not great at all. We opted not to take our cooking equipment as we wanted to use the cafe for our food however this wasn’t an option. The staff weren’t the best and often looked unhappy when ordering food well before closing hours. Food choices were limited as they ran out of supplies. Food that was on offer wasn’t great at all.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked We enjoyed the site, the porch was perfect and open for the kids to play. Park was fun, needs a bit of TLC but the obstacle course was a firm favourite. We also enjoyed the outdoor pool and the kids loved the indoor kids pool. We saw there was a cool mini golf but we unfortunately didn’t get time to play. Nighttime entertainment was fun and plenty for kids and adults. Bar was really cheap and everyone was very friendly. The regulars on site were particularly welcoming and for me that made the trip.
Toilet and shower facilities were fine, clean and had everything you needed. There was a fun soft play and old school arcade which we all enjoyed. Showers were warm, I showered once around mid day and the water was cooler but I’d imagine that was after the morning rush. Each other shower I had was perfect. The site is a little dated but for me it added to the charm as it reminded me of sites I visitors as a kid. There is a small little shop with the basics you need, milk, bread, bacon haha. All in all we were pretty happy and had a great few days.

Disliked The food in the cafe… it wasn’t the best unfortunately. We used it on our last night and were disappointed.

Local attractions

If you're up for some angling, cast off from rocks, boats or loch near Burrowhead Holiday Village; fishing off the rocks is allowed at the Burrowhead coast and at the local beaches. All of this scenery lends itself well to walks as well: once you've wandered along the coast a bit, try the trails at Kirroughtree and through the Galloway Forest Park (45 minutes' drive). This is top birdwatching territory too, so look out/up for birds when you're around this part of coast, and it's prime dark skies land for stargazing afterwards. Popular attractions in the area are Bladnoch Distillery (half an hour), Galloway Forest Park, the book town of Wigtown (half an hour) and the Cream o' Galloway (an hour and five minutes), a dairy farm that produces topping ice cream and has a crazy golf course. Nearby Whithorn (15 minutes) is where Christianity in Scotland evolved under the leadership of St Ninian; the Whithorn Story Visitor Centre and St Ninian's Cave are the main tourist draws. Other nearby days out could include the 75 acres of child-friendly Castle Kennedy Gardens (55 minutes); a look at the inhabitants of Monreith Animal World (20 minutes), and the watersports and activities of Galloway Activity Centre (an hour and 15 minutes). Finally, the port of Cairnryan is about an hour's drive away: sail to Larne in Northern Ireland from here and drive along the coast to have a day in Belfast.
