  • Peaceful, family-friendly holiday park in the hills of Dumfries
  • Dumfries, Moffat, castles and cycle routes within an hour's drive
  • Bar and bistro, forest walks and private fjord for fishing
When you think of Scotland, what leaps to mind? If you answered stunning scenery, spectacular lochs and Mel Gibson, well… two out of three ain’t bad. Settle in at Dumfries and Galloway's Moffat Manor Holiday Park, just outside the small village of Beattock and 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Moffat, for views, rambles and relaxing by the water. This is a splendid spot for bikers of all sorts: if you like to stick to the roads, you can pedal along Route 74 from Beattock towards Gretna Green to join the famed Sea to Sea Cycle Route, or you can up the adrenaline with trips to two of the 7stanes mountain biking centres (Mabie and the Forest of Ae) for going-downhill-at-speed days. You don’t need to go far for holiday explores though: the site is on more than 80 acres of woodland, with loads of country walks along pretty streams and even a private loch for waterside strolls and a spot of fishing. When your stomach starts rumbling, saunter over to the Lakeside Tavern & Restaurant for a bite to eat and a couple of drinks, as well as a few nights’ evening entertainment. The Lakeside is only open from Wednesday to Sunday, so you’re on your own the rest of the week – fire up the barbecue if you fancy (an on-site shop has all the essentials and there’s a supermarket in Moffat), or head into Moffat or Dumfries to dine at one of the restaurants.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Reception and staff, excellent.
The Tavern and staff, excellent.

Disliked Absolutely everything else.
We was booked in for 2 nights but left after 1 night. The pitch was on a slope. Rabbit holes and rabbits everywhere. The toilet block was just acceptable but was a shambles as idiots had decided to make it a tip. It doesn't look anything like the photos on Pitchup. Would and could not recommend this site. We couldn't wait to leave.

Liked Nothing

Disliked The service from the maintenance guy who left the bar staff to try and get our electrics working with no success so we had no electric hook up for the two nights we were there nobody came to see how we were we were put right at the top of a hill when there were spaces near the facilities also we were made to feel like it was the caravan that was faulty when it wasn’t we were offered to relocate but it was late and we were already set up and it was a nightmare to get there with the sat nav

Electric grass pitch

Liked This is a completely honest review. As a site it has plenty of potential. At the moment it has lots of problems.

Location is good, as fairly central in Dumfries and Galloway. It's just off the motorway, so very easy to get to. Plus Moffat is only 2 miles up the road. A pleasant town. Access to the mountains is good. Lockerbie is only a 20 minute drive to get provisions. Dumfries has a larger selection of shops. Apparently the Tavern on site is pleasant and the pizzas are good. Drinks are expensive as with most sites. It is very dog friendly which is a bonus for me, it won't suit everyone. Plenty to see and do within a 50 mile radius. So a good base. I stayed for 16 nights. It was very good value for money at the time of my stay. I have noticed prices do go up peak season, also they charge for Dogs during peak season.

There is no laundry facilities on site at the time of posting. Although one at the petrol station in Moffat which is reasonably priced

Apparently the site was run down by previous owners and management. It is under new management. So hopefully things will improve.

Disliked The bad bits.

The main shower block was rundown and now stands derelict. So 2 porta-cabins are there temporarily until they rebuild the toilet and shower block. These porta-cabins are not adequate when the site gets busy. Also during my stay of 16 nights they were only cleaned once. So the smell of ammonia was overpowering on hot days. They were checked about once a day, just not cleaned. Some times they were not checked for 2 to 4 days. I photographed the checklist.

There are several dog poo bins dotted around the site. These were not emptied the entire stay. So flies and smell was becoming unpleasant. Also previous guests had put general waste in them. This is how I knew they hadn't been emptied.

There were many rabbits on site. I actually enjoyed seeing them. Just dogs and rabbits don't always mix. Also the rabbit burrows are undermining the site. Luckily my dog also enjoyed watching them and didn't try to eat them.

We had 3 nights of antisocial behaviour from a group of campers. The last night of their stay the police were called by other guests. There is no security on site, no staff walking around, so that needs attention, as the antisocial guests abused other guests. I know it happens and you always get them.

From my observations the maintenance team were not doing their jobs properly. As bins not emptied, grass not cut, toilets not maintained. As I said if they get their act together it would be a very pleasant site.

The little lake/Loch needs some attention as left to get overgrown. It is a lovely area for an evening walk for the dog before bed.

The pitches are on a slope, this will cause problems for some, as not ideal

I wouldn't recommend to any one with mobility issues or friends. Although I would go back to see if things have improved. The staff are all friendly. Then if procedures are implemented I would recommend it

Liked Entertainment on the evening was very good Saturday night,

Bingo was OK but didn't realise we was competing against all sites,

Lovely walks around the site, pond with all the nature and old as s**t trees made it a lovely spot.

Staff where chilled and lovely, was 2 younger staff members.

Close to moffat and motorway,

Views are good beyond the site,

Disliked The road on the site is terrible, pot holes everywhere and especially when you come in.

Booze at the bar is pricey.

Toilets smelt shockingly bad (males).

Our spot was cramped and tents cramped either side from others campers (we all agreed), I booked for hard standing, especially when there was loads of other empty spots.

The pond is beutiful and you can fish it, site could utilise that pond for small boats for kids or put actual fish in it,

Liked Great price, close to Moffat and friendly and helpful staff. Walk around the loch is amazing!

Disliked Pitches are on a slant but its not a big issue, its very basic but for £15 a night you get exactly what you pay for.

Liked The staff were very friendly & recommendationson the local area. The on site bar & guest services coffee area were clean & updated, there was bingo & entertainment on in the bar area on the saturday evening. The park had some lovely areas to walk the dog nearby on the woodland paths. I think new showers & toilet blocks are being planned with chemical disposal point as there was only portacabins with showers & toilets around the site however these were kept clean & tidy.

Disliked The chemical disposal point wasn't working as it was in the old shower block building.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Nothing.
But I must add the staff were polite and pleasant.

Disliked Grass pitches were on a slope so great ramps would have been totally ineffective.
The site owners are not truthful. Had read reports about toilets in a state of disrepair. Rang site number which went to central switchboard. They kept me on hold for a while, while they checked status and told me that the renovations were complete. That was a lie. Toilets were portacabins, which also poor. Gents only had one working toilet.
Also spoke to some who were staying in the sites statics, they too were non to pleased about broken promises and the state of the site.
Waste point was appalling, so was the dish washing area.

Local attractions

You could easily spend your entire break on the site, but there’s so much nearby that you’d be missing. Stop number one should be the town of Dumfries, half an hour away – it was the home of famed national poet Rabbie Burns and there’s plenty around to honour the wordsmith, but the museum and Moat Brae (JM Barrie’s childhood home) are also worth a look. Turn your wheels next to stunning Drumlanrig Castle (which TV addicts may recognise from the second season of Outlander) 45 minutes away, to wander the gardens or – if you’ve timed your visit well – tours and tea in the grand house itself, which houses artwork from Sandby, Gainsborough and Rembrandt. If you’re after a quickie wedding, it doesn’t get much quicker than a half-hour car journey down the A74 to Gretna Green, where 18th-century marriages were performed at the drop of a hat (or hammer, in the famous blacksmith’s shop). The village still does weddings, but they need a little bit more notice these days… Craving a city day or two? The shops, museums, galleries and tourist spots of Glasgow and Edinburgh are between an hour and an hour and a half away.
