  • Well-maintained site just outside Gretna, in Dumfries and Galloway
  • Dumfries half an hour’s drive; Caerlaverock Castle 35 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; several golf courses within a half-hour drive
It almost sounds like the set-up to a joke – why did three lads from Northern England move to Gretna, in Scotland? To open Braids Caravan Park, that’s why. David (from Northumberland), Paul (Tyneside) and Tim (Yorkshire) have set up this site on the outskirts of Gretna (a 10-minute walk from the town and its shops, restaurants and pubs), in Dumfries and Galloway. Easily accessed from main roads like the M6 and A74, the site is peaceful and surrounded by well-maintained greenery (including leafy cherry trees), with level hardstanding pitches and lawn areas for each caravan, plus a large area with picnic tables for alfresco eating. And while you devour your dinner… who knows? You might be lucky and be treated to views of the spectacular Northern lights. Each pitch comes with electric, water and drainage hook-up points, and the site has a pristine toilet and shower block (including spacious facilities for disabled guests), a washing-up area and a launderette. Scotland is renowned for its golf courses, and there are a handful within a half-hour drive; if you want a proper Scottish links golf course, though, you’ll have to go a little farther, to Southerness Golf Club (one hour’s drive), on the Solway Firth. The Solway Firth coastline is, of course, well worth exploring even if you’re not into golfing. Your canine companion might enjoy a walk on beaches such as Powfoot and Annan (20 minutes), while history buffs should continue on to Caerlaverock Castle (35 minutes), a moated, three-sided fortress with a long history.

What customers say

This campsite is praised for its convenient location, excellent facilities, and very friendly, helpful staff. Pitches are generally well-sized and clean, with good proximity to shops and the motorway, making it an ideal stopover. While most visitors have a positive experience, some mention that the toilet and shower facilities are dated and that there are extra charges for showers and hairdryers, with WiFi also being slow.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Men's shower was really good and bathrooms were warm, though mrs said this wasn't the case in the womens bathroom

Disliked Booked site which said water on every pitch and this wasn't the case as from what I could see there wasn't a dedicated water on any pitch.also said bathrooms were immaculate but to us they were very tired and dated.cost of £30 per night was higher than most places we've stopped at,which were much better regarding facilities.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Pitches are a great size, easily pitch an awning and all serviced. Staff are absolutely amazing… I even parked in the wrong spot, but easily sorted. I love this place… easy to find and so close to the motorway for travels down to England and back home to Scotland. Definitely recommend.

Disliked Having to pay for a shower, only 20p, but used to it being part of the price of pitch. Also, I have Starlink but wouldn’t work as pitched under trees.

Local attractions

Cross the border into England to visit Carlisle (20 minutes’ drive), where in 1568 a tower in the medieval castle was ‘home’ to Mary, Queen of Scots for a couple of months (she was a prisoner, really). The 13th-century cathedral has a splendid choir area, with a star-studded sky-blue ceiling and stained-glass windows. In Dumfries (half an hour), the Dumfries Museum displays regional artefacts such as fossils, prehistoric weapons and Victorian farming tools; in good weather, it also runs demonstrations of its camera obscura. Cross the River Nith via the stone Devorgilla Bridge to get to the town centre and find the monument to poet Robert Burns. In addition to the long-distance multi-use path circling Kielder Water and a large network of hiking biking trails, Kielder Forest (one hour) is home to assorted wildlife, including nesting ospreys and England’s largest population of red squirrels.
