  • Rural dog-friendly site by a river 10 minutes’ drive from Dumfries
  • A five-minute drive from Dalscone Farm Fun; half an hour from the sea
  • Modern showers and disabled facilities; awnings provided; shop nearby
If you’re after a well-serviced spot to park up for the night or are looking to stick around and explore stunning Dumfries and Galloway, you’ve hit upon the right spot. Newbridge Country Park is a modern holiday park that handily suits both purposes, being half an hour’s drive from the M74 (for journey to the Highlands or south to the Lakes) and about the same distance from beaches and historic castles. Set in several acres of countryside, the holiday park has spectacular views over the hills of Galloway Forest Park (half an hour’s drive), where you can soon be out exploring on foot or by bike. Anglers can cast for brown trout at Alderneuk Fishery or fly fish for salmon (in season) on the River Nith (both 15 minutes), and there are a couple of golf courses within 15 minutes’ drive too. The lively town of Dumfries (10 minutes) is a sure-fire bet for picking up food or any other bits and bobs. If you’re having a break from the stove, take your pick of cosy pubs, organic cafés and restaurants serving local Scottish produce while you’re there. There's another shop five minutes' walk from the site. Back at base camp, all the pitches are neatly landscaped, and spotless facilities on the site include a shower block with wet rooms and a laundry room, plus chemical disposal.

Liked: The place was very clean and well looked after. The owners were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The site was in an excellent location and felt very safe and secure there.

Disliked: Would have benefited from more showers but it didn't really cause us a problem.

From the manager: Your review is much appreciated. On site there are 3 showers, one off the games room and the other 2 up by reception, one of which is a wet room which is suitably adapted for the disabled. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and hope to see you again soon.

Electric gravel pitch

Liked: I cannot recommend this site enough. It is so peaceful with beautiful scenery and sky line at night. Although it is a small site it has everything that you need. The toilets and shower were immaculate and felt like a home from home as did the games area. Our 2 daughters loved running around the grass area and looking at the animals in the fields. The site is only 2 miles from Dumfries town centre and easy access to all major roads. The site is very secure at night with a locked gate. The best thing about the site for our 2 daughters was the free wife after us visiting 3 others sites before this one I can honestly say this was the best site in our D&G tour. Thank you so much for an amazing and super easy stay.

Electric gravel pitch

Liked: The shower block, washing machine were a nice touch. Clean and easy to use. Close proximity to the town and various out of town shopping centres.

Disliked: This appears to be a fairly new site but “country park” really doesn’t match reality. Fairly close to the main road so there is road noise. No reception on arrival. No info on facilities and essential info like waste disposal and a pile of gravel in the corner. Was told off by what I assume was a warden for not having the dog on a lead despite us being the only ones there. A bit petty we thought. Ok for a stop off en-route to somewhere else but we won’t be back.

From the manager: Your review is appreciated. Since your stay we have addressed a lot of your issues and put procedures into place to give more information on arrival. We have a policy of dogs being kept on leads at all times on the site, which also includes the holiday home owners too. This is also the same policy at the majority of other campsites. But we have a dedicated large dog walking field along side the campsite with a beautiful river for everyone to enjoy. We hope you will stay with us again and see the improvements we have made.

Local attractions

Dumfries (10 minutes’ drive) was the birthplace of Robbie Burns in 1759; see displays on the life of Scotland’s favourite poet, as well as portraits and period rooms, at the Robert Burns House, or read more about his life and times at the Robert Burns Centre, an 18th-century watermill sitting on the banks of the River Nith. There’s more on his backstory at Robert Burns Ellisland Farm (five minutes), a sprawling homestead where he once farmed. Spectacular Drumlanrig Castle and Gardens (20 minutes) makes a great day out for all the family, with its stellar art collection, woodland walks and adventure playground. For more Scottish heritage, stop by the moated remains of medieval Caerlaverock Castle (25 minutes), or have a nose around impressive cloisters of 13th-century Sweetheart Abbey (20 minutes) in New Abbey. If you prefer to do your exploring on foot, amble up to the 60-foot waterfall in Grey Mare’s Tail Nature Reserve (50 minutes), or pack a picnic and hike to Loch Trool and Bruce’s Stone – commemorating Robert the Bruce’s victory over the English in 1307 – in Galloway Forest Park (half an hour).
