  • Castle Douglas 10 minutes’ drive; 7stanes cycle trails five minutes
  • Dog-friendly with serviced pitches; fishing available on the River Urr
After peace, bracing Scottish air, spectacular views and fully serviced pitches? Claycroft Farm, five minutes’ drive from Dalbeattie in Dumfries and Galloway, has got the lot. Open only to adults who are members of the Caravan and Motorhome Club, this well-kept touring site has hardstanding pitches with electric hook-ups, water points and leafy views over neighbouring valleys and woodland. Being only five minutes’ drive from the A75, it’s easy to access too, and has all the waste-disposal facilities you need. Dalbeattie has small supermarkets and a selection of pubs and cafés to keep you fed and watered as well. The site is backed by the River Urr, where you are welcome to try your hand at coarse fishing. A footpath leads down to the river, where there are a few seats so you can soak up the views. Livestock on the property includes hens, ducks, sheep, horses and a dog – you’re welcome to bring your own four-legged friends by the way, and you can exercise them along the river or in the surrounding hills. While you’re pottering about the place, keep your eyes open for red kites and peregrine falcons flying above the trees, kingfishers flitting around the pond (where there are also a couple of benches for quiet moments) and otters in the river.

Local attractions

If you’re keen to get out into scenic countryside, Dalbeattie Forest Town Wood (five minutes’ drive) has several woodland walks leading to peaceful Plantain Loch; along the way look out for the sculptures hewn out of rock. To get the adrenaline flowing, try the mountain bike trails from 7stanes (five minutes), where there’s a challenge suitable for all levels of ability. If you’d like to have a day at the seaside, Kippford (10 minutes) is a pretty village overlooking the Solway Firth; from there you can hike along the shoreline Jubilee Path to Rockcliffe beach (40 minutes on foot), passing the remains of a 5th-century AD stronghold at Mote of Mark on the way. The lively market town of Castle Douglas (10 minutes’ drive) sits near the calm waters of Carlingwark Loch, where you can learn to sail or paddle a canoe overlooked by the gaunt remains of 14th-century Threave Castle. The stunning water features, walled gardens and formal plantings at nearby Threave Garden & Nature Reserve (15 minutes) are also worth a visit.
