  • Friendly family country park on a terraced hillside with estuary views
  • Coarse fishing loch and woodland and coastal walks nearby
  • Heated outdoor pool, playground and games and TV room
Get on your bike for some splendid Scottish mountain biking – and coarse fishing, forest strolls and spectacular scenery, all close to the coast in Dumfries and Galloway. A short and scenic amble from the old fishing village of Palnackie is Kippford View Holiday Park , overlooking the tidal estuary of the Urr Water towards Kippford and the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The stunning scenery of Rockcliffe Bay is a few miles along the coast. Palnackie is the starting point for the circular peninsula walk following the Urr and Heston estuaries for excellent island views, a hidden beach and the historic Orchardton Tower. A stay here will also have you within four miles of the famed 7stanes mountain bike route at Dalbeattie (and 17 miles from Mabie's), and right next to a Sustrans cycle route passing the park entrance. The hugely scenic Screel Hill Walk and coarse fishing at Barwhanny Loch are close by too. This is a family-friendly site on a terraced hillside among green and serene surroundings. It has a seasonal heated outdoor pool, a TV and games room, a small shop and a play park, alongside amenities of toilets and hot showers, and a launderette with washing machines and tumble dryers. Chemical disposal and gas cylinders are both available.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked Nice and quiet. Showers nice and clean. Got a tv signal ok. Owner very friendly and helpful (discussed a couple of walks). Pub down the road (no food at moment). Brilliant cafe also 👍
If you like countryside, views and somewhere to chill then this is ideal. (However, it was a quiet weekend in April so we had the touring pitches to ourselves!)

Disliked Nothing to be honest.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked The hosts were welcoming and the very small village offers a peaceful setting with a lovely pub.

We headed along to the beach we’ve stayed at before at the sister site and also a walk to the forest which was lovely despite the awful weather.

Big pitches and ours was not too far off level.

The dog walk field is great with plenty room to exercise our dog and a bin there also was handy.

Disliked The electrics are a nightmare!! Ours kept tripping even when literally having only our low voltage kettle plugged in, not an issue we encounter elsewhere so that was disappointing and in poor weather, you’re in the van more so this really needs attention.

The toilets are very very dated and also there is a laundry room which when it’s so wet, and you have a dog, would be real help to wash and dry towels etc however, the site shop doesn’t take card which means we couldn’t buy any tokens to use these facilities without a 15 min drive into the local town.

Many of the rural sites we’ve stayed in take card and to be fair this site has a massive static caravan presence so that would put us off returning.

The price we paid for two nights was £80
So I’d expect better.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked Good sized pitches right next to a good play area and football pitch for the children. Toilet block is dated but clean. Great dog walking grass area. Good laundry facility.
Quiet little site in a good location for the coast and Castle Douglas only 15mins away.
The staff on site are fantastic - friendly and helpful.

Disliked Shower block could do with an upgrade and a designated family shower room would be great

Fully-serviced grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked Service touring pitches were sheltered from any wind and were close to the pool. Toilets/showers were clean and laundrette was useful. Pool was clean and was free to use while we were on site - kids enjoyed it. Small playground and grassed flat area with football goals on. Site was close to small town about 8 min drive - Dalbeattie suitable for getting supplies from local shops. Community shop walkable from site in Palnackie and free range eggs from house at honesty box next door to the site. Games room always open with pool table and air hockey with some board games too, useful if weather is poor. The bob and Shirley, the owners were lovely, live on site and are popping around in golf buggy regularly. We went out and about in the car to kippford and had ice cream and walk down small fishing town. Deer park is a short drive away too, which is well worth a visit. Massive beach there too.

Local attractions

From coastal walks to castles, museums to monasteries to mountain biking, there's stacks to do around here whatever floats your Scottish holiday boat. As well as the circular walk from Palnackie around the Urr and Heston estuaries, you could also trek the trails in Doach Wood three miles away and Mabie Forest 13 miles away, or take the Almorness Point Walk, reachable in seven miles. Wanders of a different nature can be had around Sulwath Brewers, eight miles away at Castle Douglas. If you're hankering after ornithology days, the reserve at RSPB Mersehead is the place to spy snipe, lapwings, curlews and redshanks around its Wetland Trail (and huge flocks of barnacle and pink-footed geese getting ready here for their long journey north). There's also the Red Kite Feeding Station just outside Laurieston, where the birds swoop down to be fed each day. The 16th-century tower house of Drumcoltran Tower is nine miles away near Kirkgunzeon; also take a trip to the 14th-century island fortress of Threave Castle 10 miles away; the one-acre walled garden and rose areas of Threave Gardens, and the 13th-century Cistercian monastery of Sweetheart Abbey, 15 miles away at New Abbey.
