Fishing lake

General

  • Gretna country park with trout fishing and clay pigeon shooting
  • A 40-minute drive from walks and sea fishing on the Solway Coast
  • Lake District watersports and hills within an hour's drive

Found a great catch or fancy a shotgun wedding? This fab shooting and fishing site’s 10 minutes from Gretna Green.

Over 100-acre grounds in the Dumfries and Galloway countryside, Westlands Country Park combines outdoor activities with fine natural surrounds: there are three fishing ponds here for starters, with some whoppers weighing in at 12lbs (catch and release or keep a few to barbecue for supper). Rods are available on site and tackle shops are a 25-minute drive away in Carlisle.

You won’t find the clay pigeons as tasty as the trout but the shooting’s a lark, with the faux-birds being launched from a 140-foot tower. Novices can book a session with an instructor, but if you’ve got a shotgun licence you can hone your skills with some tuition or just head for the traps (booking essential).

The site has a café serving hot food from 9am and a small shop for basics... it’s hungry work all that shootin’ and fishin’, after all... And even if you’re not planning any nuptials, Gretna (10 minutes) has a great selection of pubs and eateries, as well as supermarkets for stocking up.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Facilities/activities including fishing are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Potential very good site after few minor improvements 04/09/2018

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom Darren T. Mobile phone icon Confirmed

Great site, lovely setting. Lots of potential for a new looking set up. Well maintained and immaculately clean. Facilities were reasonably good bar a few minor things. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. Able to pitch up on a caravan pitch so had electric hookup, a water tap and parking at the pitch!

    Disliked:

Cafe smelt badly of grease. Showers cold. Grass was freshly cut and mowers didn’t have collectors for the cuttings so the cut grass made its way into the tent very easily!

Local attractions

You don’t have to confine your fishing to the ponds: head half an hour to Port Carlisle for sea fishing from the Solway estuary banks, or an hour to Bassenthwaite in the Lake District.

The paths round Bassenthwaite lake are popular with walkers and bikers, partly because of the many tempting stopoff spots for picnicking and stone-skimming (and because of the local distillery with tours and samples...?) The adjacent Whinlatter Forest Park is also well-supplied with trails for hiking and mountain biking, while walks up the high peaks of Skiddaw and Grisedale Pike provide all the altitude anyone could desire. One of the acclaimed 7stanes mountain biking centres of southern Scotland, Mabie, is 50 minutes' drive away.

It’s a 40-minute trip to Bowness-on-Solway, at the tip of the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; walk the Hadrian’s Wall Trail all 73 miles to Tyneside if you fancy it, or march a shorter section and picnic on the walls like the legionaries did.

Some fine family-friendly walks start from Burgh-by-Sands (35 minutes) and Silloth (50 minutes), taking in the (alleged) resting place of Edward I, Hammer of the Scots, and the wildlife of the wetlands; various do-in-a-day bike routes start from Carlisle, Kirkbride (35 minutes) and Silloth to see the region from the saddle.

If you’re seeking more pulse-racing stuff, try flyboating nine metres over the water or jetskiing at Wetjets in Dumfries (25 minutes).

Must see

  • World Famous Old Blacksmith's Shop Centre (3.9 miles)
  • Carlisle Castle (11.6 miles)
  • Robert Burns Centre (18.6 miles)
