  • Peaceful site on a 200-acre estate with beach access
  • A 25-minute drive from Dumfries and 35 from Carlisle
  • Seven coarse fishing lakes and fully stocked tackle shop on site
Calm water and a haven for nature, lakes sure are peaceful… so how do you fancy a stay on a 200-acre private estate with seven of them on site? Stays at Broom Caravan and Campsite come with (yep, you guessed it) seven lakes and an array of wildlife to spot, including the rare natterjack toad, badgers, deer, bitterns and dingy skipper butterflies. Keen anglers will be in heaven here – the site is 100 metres from Broom Fisheries’ bankside, so you can simply roll out of bed and set up for the day. The coarse fishing lakes are packed with a range of specimens, and there’s a fully stocked tackle shop on site for bait and other supplies. Four-legged friends are welcome, so feel free to bring one along for some company while you wander. There’s also access to a private beach for folk who'd like to swap lake views for seaside ones, and you can hire an outdoor photography hide on site to boost your chances of a face to face encounter with the local wildlife. When you’re up for venturing further afield, this spot makes a great base to see more of Dumfries and Galloway and beyond; guests can choose between historical market towns like Annan (less than 10 minutes’ drive) and livelier cities like Carlisle (35 minutes) when it comes to days out.

Bella cabin

Liked: Me and my son and had a brilliant 3days fishing will definitely go back again

Disliked: No cooking facilities

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for posting a review for us, I am glad to hear you enjoyed yourselves and will revisit us. As for the cooking facilities we don't really like guests cooking in the accommodation, although as you know we do provide a kettle, toaster, fridge and microwave for your convenience, however, we are thinking of opening up a communal kitchen and sitting area for next year.

Visited last year so our 2nd stay says it all. Highly recommended.

Ella camping pod (no pets)

Liked: We loved the quiet location of the Ella pod and it was a short walk from the toilet and shower. The main fishing lakes were close by as well and we purchased a permit during our stay so we could alternate between fishing the private lake at the Ella pod and the bigger lakes too. The pod was quiet at night and we were lucky enough to hear barn owls and tawny owls at night and had clear enough skies to see the milky way. Absolutely wonderful. The staff on site were kind, knowledgeable and helpful and were available when needed although we had no issues during our stay. The tackle shop had everything and then some for fishing and we caught a selection of species, some new ones for us! We both caught our biggest carp this trip as well so came away very pleased and will definitely return for a fishing day out. I loved getting up at 7am to have an early fish on the private lake before the fishery opened at 8am as well.

Disliked: This was my first "camping" experience and I must admit I was missing home comforts. We didn't have WiFi at the fishery or the Ella pod so had to drive to Annan (about 8 minutes) to be able to catch up with family and send photos of our trip. The lights inside the Ella pod were very bright and at night gave no privacy if they were on inside so we used a torch we brought instead. There aren't any places to eat at Broom so we drove to Annan for food and ordered a takeaway one night after a failed BBQ attempt! As we only had a kettle and no fridge/microwave we were limited to what we could eat so had pot noodles for lunch. I'm sure for most these aren't issues and we still absolutely loved our break away.

Ella camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Peacefully and quiet

Disliked: Accidentally fished from wrong side of a little bridge. The owner came over and started shouting at me using the F- word. I apologised for my genuine error ( there were no signs) but he continued his F- worded rant at me. Wasted what was a 2 day fishing break that I had been so looking forward to.

From the manager: I am sorry that you felt that "we" had wasted "your" fishing break....but this platform is for leaving a review on your accommodation, not your experience at the fishery.... when asked about your stay, you had nothing but complementary things to say. However, in your comment above relating to the fishery you state that you, "accidentally fished from the wrong side of the bridge" not to mention the wrong side of the lake, (for the benefit of potential customers reading this reply) we have platforms all down one side of the lake all numbered, with anglers on the majority of them that day, whereas the opposite side of the lake, has no platforms, and no anglers, only long undergrowth, which is particularly difficult, if not impossible to fish from...you also forgot to mention the huge amount of basking fish on the surface on that side, that you thought, I know I can't accurately cast to them from this side, so I will just walk round and drop a bait on their noses, and when you were spotted by the fishery manager and asked to return to the opposite bank, (as states in the rules anglers are only permitted to fish from the platforms) for your own welfare and that of our fish, in front of everyone else, you felt maybe a little embarrassed doing the walk of shame !! The manager had no need to swear...as for signage, in 28 years, anglers have been able to work that one out for themselves....

Highly recommended for fishing

Rowan 2 bedroom static caravan

Liked: Peace and tranquility, very friendly and helpful staff at the site, excellent fishing facilities, short walk to the beach, beautifully clean caravan, facilities in the caravan, on-site fishing shop, atmosphere.

Disliked: Satnav will take you through a huge puddle under the railway bridge, ensure you take the right road.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Glad you enjoyed your stay with us, its always nice when you know that your guests have enjoyed their stay with us, hope to see you again soon. I know that puddle under the railway bridge is a nightmare, I do try to tell everyone not to follow their SatNav and take the Newbie turning over the bridge as some SatNavs do strange things, but no one seems to be doing anything about it, unfortunately.

Bella cabin

Liked: Decided to take our grandson fishing and also celebrate our 38th wedding anniversary doing something we love . Having not fished for a good few years due to health reasons I thought having the option to book Bella cabin and stay a couple of nights would benefit me better than driving down and back home the same day. Bella was very spacious an ideal choice for the three of us. The Complimentary tea and coffee to get us started was very much appreciated. Our grandson had a great two days fishing catching 12 fish in total. The view over the lochs at dawn and dusk an added bonus to our stay. Hopefully won't be as long till we come again. Would definitely like to try one of the pods next time for fishing.

From the manager: Your grandson certainly had a great time, every time, every time I saw him he had the biggest smile, which usually indicates all is well. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon..

Local attractions

If you’re looking for an alternative to a day on the lake, immerse yourself in history instead. Annan Museum (less than 10 minutes’ drive) takes you through the history of the area, or you can talk money at the Savings Banks Museum (10 minutes), where there’s a fab piggy bank collection. Other options are the Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum (25 minutes), located on the site of the former RAF Dumfries airbase, and the Dumfries Museum (half an hour), with the world's oldest working camera obscura. As for historical sights, check out the triangular Caerlaverock Castle (25 minutes), which is surrounded by a moat and lawns, or the romantically named 13th-century Sweetheart Abbey (35 minutes). Alternatively, a visit to the grand Drumlanrig Castle and Gardens (50 minutes) can be topped off nicely with a treat in the tearoom. If shopping is on the cards, Gretna Gateway Outlet Village (20 minutes) is the place for some retail therapy. You can pay your respects to Scottish poet Robert Burns in Dumfries (25 minutes), taking in the statue, the mausoleum burial site and the museum at his former home, which houses various possessions including manuscripts and letters.
