Broom Caravan and Campsite: Caravan

General

  • Peaceful site on a 200-acre estate with beach access
  • A 25-minute drive from Dumfries and 35 from Carlisle
  • Seven coarse fishing lakes and fully stocked tackle shop on site

Calm water and a haven for nature, lakes sure are peaceful… so how do you fancy a stay on a 200-acre private estate with seven of them on site? Stays at Broom Caravan and Campsite come with (yep, you guessed it) seven lakes and an array of wildlife to spot, including the rare natterjack toad, badgers, deer, bitterns and dingy skipper butterflies.

Keen anglers will be in heaven here – the site is 100 metres from Broom Fisheries’ bankside, so you can simply roll out of bed and set up for the day. The coarse fishing lakes are packed with a range of specimens, such as barbel, bream, rudd and carp, and there’s a fully stocked tackle shop on site for bait and other supplies (so don’t worry if you leave any kit at home).

Not a fishing fan? Not a problem… these peaceful surrounds are also splendid for a stroll around the lakes instead. Four-legged friends are welcome, so feel free to bring one along for some company while you wander. There’s also access to a beach for folk who'd like to swap lake views for seaside ones.

When you’re up for venturing further afield, this spot makes a great base to see more of Dumfries and Galloway and beyond; guests can choose between historical market towns like Annan (less than 10 minutes’ drive) and livelier cities like Carlisle (35 minutes) when it comes to days out.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Everything, all I can say is WOW this place is amazing. We stayed in the caravan with hot tub and were extremely impressed. The staff couldn't have been anymore helpful, from cleaning the tub everyday to encouraging a novice to fish, they really answered any queries, provided information about the area and always acknowledged guests with friendly conversation. The tranquility is beautiful, the walks fantastic and they even allowed our fur babies as well. This is a gem of a place and we will definitely return 😁. This is not a commercialised camping area it's a place to sit back, relax and admire nature.

Very convenient hardstanding pitch with electrical hook up.
One of the best hot showers I've ever had on a campsite.
Great, fully stocked tackle and bait shop.
And last but definitely not least. A great few days fishing with plenty of carp and bream, with a good choice of swims over the 6 non specimen waters. (I don't do specimen hunting).
I will be back and would highly recommend to any fishermen.

We have very happy that you enjoyed your stay with us, and exceeded your expectations, this year is our 25th year since we opened the fishery and have been building it up steadily over the years, we particularly enjoy it when we know others are getting so much from visiting us...hope you will return again soon.

From the manager...

Customer not happy due to being told there was no beach access as stated...the day after her arrival two people are walking a dog from the fishery cafe toward the tackle shop, both wearing masks, the lady barks "have you got a path to the beach from here" to whit I answered no sorry we don't, the couple span on their heels and headed away from me back in the direction of the cafe, and in the opposite direction of the campsite, I assumed wrongly, but there were never any clues given as to the fact that they were staying on one of our five pitches, I thought they were just visitors to the cafe that just wanted to roam, however, the beach access is reserved only for our guests...so later that evening up pops this review, and I had noticed this woman taking pictures of obscure items, but never thought any more about it, but as you can see from the pictures that are far from flattering...so let me explain, during lockdown me and my partner decided to create a big carpark for the fishery, we crushed up a steel 20' container and and piled it up ready for the scrap man to collect (pic1) back filled with sand & gravel (pic2) Installed a retaiining wall (p3) uncovered a building from the explosives manufacturing days which is inside the fishery and nothing to do with the CL site, but no it is definately NOT a childrens play area) (p4) The view to the lady's caravan from the road incorporating the metal mobile shower-room we had built, which incidentally has two brand new bathrooms inside, waiting to be clad on the outside and commissioned but due to Covid is on a waiting list So we still use the shower-room in the main building (p5) Pot wash stainless steel sink, hot and cold water, and also in the covid line to be painted - DONE (p6) Close up of new toilet block - complete with complainants dog, Note NO lead (p7)
I went to see the lady and once we had established that it was her that asked about the beach access, and it was my mistake, she apologised and when I asked if she could take down the misleading pictures she said she would once she arrived home the next day, as you can see she did not...Hopefully, this explains that awful review...the next one which I'm not going to respond to, was her next door, and the person next to them she also tried to solicit into posting a bad review, but he came and told me as he was leaving, the morning after her review went up...it's no wonder small sites are closing, or just keeping to their regulars...

Local attractions

If you’re looking for an alternative to a day on the lake, immerse yourself in history instead. Annan Museum (less than 10 minutes’ drive) takes you through the history of the area, or you can talk money at the Savings Banks Museum (10 minutes), where there’s a fab piggy bank collection. Other options are the Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum (25 minutes), located on the site of the former RAF Dumfries airbase, and the Dumfries Museum (half an hour), with the world's oldest working camera obscura.

As for historical sights, check out the triangular Caerlaverock Castle (25 minutes), which is surrounded by a moat and lawns, or the romantically named 13th-century Sweetheart Abbey (35 minutes). Alternatively, a visit to the grand Drumlanrig Castle and Gardens (50 minutes) can be topped off nicely with a treat in the tearoom.

If shopping is on the cards, Gretna Gateway Outlet Village (20 minutes) is the place for some retail therapy.

You can pay your respects to Scottish poet Robert Burns in Dumfries (25 minutes), taking in the statue, the mausoleum burial site and the museum at his former home, which houses various possessions including manuscripts and letters.

Must see

  • World Famous Old Blacksmith's Shop Centre (9.8 miles)
  • John Paul Jones Cottage Museum & Visitor Centre (12.5 miles)
