  • Scenic glampsite on a working farm in Ayrshire’s Girvan Valley
  • A 10-minute drive from Maybole and 20 minutes from Ayr
  • Sandy beaches within 20 minutes’ drive of the site
When luxury stays among castles, golf courses and sandy stretches appeal, make a beeline for Ayshire Yurts, a family-friendly glampsite less than five minutes’ drive from the Ayrshire village of Kirkmichael. In a field on a working farm in the pretty Girvan Valley, this site is in an oh-so-peaceful spot with a lovely rural vibe among fields where cows and sheep wander, and car parking next to the yurt isn’t an option. Suddenly worried about lugging kit and caboodle over uneven ground? Never fear – the site’s owner will provide a wheelbarrow for ferrying everything to and fro. Those keen on travelling car-free are well catered for here too, as pick-up from Kirkmichael is possible, and bikes can be hired within about 20 minutes of base. Of course, spending the duration of stays lounging about site might be preferable, and the cosy yurt is well set-up with a woodburning stove, sofa and double bed (and mattresses for the kids) for those lazy days. When it comes to eats, barbecues and campfires are allowed on site, and a campers’ kitchen is in place for guests’ use. Ingredients can be handily sorted at the community shop in Kirkmichael, and there’s a broad menu at the nearby pub if a break from cooking is required.

Local attractions

There are dozens of castles within easy reach of the site, but explores should probably start 10 minutes’ drive from base in the gardens of Blairquhan Castle. If that’s whetted appetites for old and stately piles, travel onwards to the spectacular clifftop Culzean Castle and Country Park (20 minutes) and the sprawling grounds and extensive Chippendale collection at Dumfries House (30). As a neat way to segue from castles to Scotland’s famous pastime – golf – make ways to the 13th-century Rowallan Castle (40 minutes) for drives and putts on the golf course with two 19th holes (one literal, one of the traditional variety). Closer to home base, urban days should be spent in the town of Maybole (10 minutes) – where guests can play golf, go to the swimming pool, or pass time in Scotland’s biggest indoor play area (Pirate Pete’s) – or by shopping, having a day at the races or lazing about on beaches in Ayr (20 minutes). For a strong taste of Scottish cultural history, be sure to travel to the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum (15 minutes) to learn about the famed poet, and get a feel for island life by exploring castles, distilleries, art galleries and stone circles on Arran (45 minutes’ drive and a 55-minute ferry crossing away).
