  • Small Ayrshire camping and tourer site with Ailsa Craig views
  • Turnberry Beach and Trump Turnberry golf course five minutes’ walk
  • Family-friendly with an all-day tearoom, picnic tables and a play park
Whether you’re passing through on the way up north or down south, or hanging out in Ayrshire to explore the area’s many attractions, Balkenna Caravan Park is a handy little biker, camping and tourer site with easy access directly off the A77 (please note there may be some traffic noise). Welcoming dogs and kids, this low-key spot has a small play park safely fenced off for the latter, while Turnberry Beach is right across the road for families and their canine companions to stretch their legs. And the park has three more USPs up its metaphorical sleeve. First is the on-site Balkenna Tearoom, where you can grab a constant supply of hot drinks, breakfasts, snacks, main meals, vegetarian dishes, desserts and ice cream throughout the day. Secondly, the views out over the Firth of Clyde to the rocky bluff of Ailsa Craig are truly spectacular, and you get to see them from all over the pitches – and finally, the Trump Turnberry is five minutes’ walk away, a bucket-list attraction for any golfers among you. Some practical stuff too: there’s drinking water on site, as well as a chemical toilet disposal point and hot showers.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Grass pitches clearly marked out. Beautiful views. Great amenities for a small site. Cafe onsite open to passersby, food was amazing. Even though it's on a main road, the road noise at isn't a problem at all. Local farm shop.

Disliked: Nothing

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Nice friendly greeting - showed us where to go and gave us a choice of pitches. A detailed map sent in advance highlighted the facilities. The showers were clean and had everything we needed. I echo the comment about the (unnecessarily) complicated door latch. I couldn't get one of the two to close, but I had the choice of using the other one so it wasn't a problem. It was close to Cairnryan for our ferry and had lovely views and a great walk along the beach.

Disliked: I normally sleep very well but I was wakened up several times with the heavy traffic along the road outside. That said, if I was getting the ferry again, it probably wouldn't stop me choosing this site due to the positives.

From the manager: thank you for your review .hope to see you again .

Would use again as a one night stop off when travelling further.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Convenience to main coastal road.
Pitch grass, level. EHU. Short walk to toilet and showers which were clean, the height of the step into the shower is high. Staff are friendly, a relaxed site. Cafe on site so great for a cooked breakfast. The view across the sea to Ailsa Craig is lovely.
Has a small play ground area.
This site is convenient for travelling along the coastline.
I'd use again as a stop over and would recommend it for that purpose but not for long stay, purely because of the road noise.

Disliked: The convenience of it being along side the coastal road is also it's disadvantage as it is a very busy road so lots of traffic noise.
In the advert it appeared there was access to walking along the shore line from the site.
I didn't find any footpath or access to the shore and the road is so busy getting across is hazardous

From the manager: thank you for your review , access to the beach is about 100 metres ,away , but you do have to cross the road to the path ,hope to see you again in the future .

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: The view from site onto Ailsa Craig is beautiful and cafe next to site it lovely, staff so friendly and food is delicious.

Disliked: The site itself has too many pitches within 2 very small fields which are far to close together not allowing the 6m rule to be adhered too. Also due to being accessed via the cafe carpark isn’t ideal when towing a caravan so is better suited to motorhomes or tents. The facilities are clean but showers have large step into them and hard to shower without water going all over the floor and the drain is over beside entrance door so whole room gets soaked when trying to mop up. The locks on toilet doors aren’t good and kept jamming leading to my daughter having to climb under door to get out.

The road noise is bad from very early which isn’t something the site can help but feel the site was a second thought and main business is cafe as very little guidance re facilities given and no one was seen on any day like usual sites, no dog poo bins or ones specific to site so had to use the cafe industrial bins.

Also no rules as people camping in tents made noise all night and there was no staff intervention.

Overall disappointed as the location has such great potential.

From the manager: Thank you for your review ,We are a small family run site , our pitcher are mostly 6 to 7 metres square , unless people arrive late , we show campers around the site on arrival and also send a map via e-mail , .We do have a request , that all campers respect others later at night .will inspect the locks on toilet doors .

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Beautiful sunset
Communication with the campsite le arrival was good.

Disliked: We felt the pitches were too close to each other and the site is on a noisy road. The bathroom area was not cleaned until about 10am and was pretty dirty. Would have preferred to have a shower in a clean area!
I didn't think the site was particularly well layed out and there was no signage to éclair where things were.

From the manager: Dear Caroline S ,
Thank you for your review.
The newly built utility block is cleaned , several times a day , once in the evenings ,to provide a clean start in the mornings ,we then clean them approximately around 10-00 , when the utility block is free to clean , and again checked in the afternoon . we pride ourselves on keeping our toilets clean , as previous reviews will confirm .
We do not feel the need for a lot of signage , as we are a small family site , and we do take our campers personally round the site to explain where all the facilities are .
Our pitches are of a good size , and we have spent a lot of time in ensuring ,our site is layed out well , to make our campers enjoy their stay .
So sorry you did not enjoy your stay with us , we will always ,do our best to make our campers enjoy their stay with us

Local attractions

The whole family will enjoy the proximity of sandy Turnberry Beach (five minutes’ walk) for strolls along the dunes or a section of the Ayrshire Coastal Path, all backed by views out to Ailsa Craig in the Firth of Clyde. Take a boat trip from Girvan (10 minutes’ drive) to this dumpy, rocky islet to see the puffin and gannet colonies on its cliffs. Back on dry land, Culzean Castle and Country Park (15 minutes) sits on cliffs high above the Firth of Clyde; tour opulent rooms packed with priceless antiques and have a stroll around the formal gardens. Any culture vultures among you can also visit the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum (20 minutes) to learn more about Scotland’s favourite bard in his childhood home; displays include original manuscripts and period furnishing. If it’s time to treat the kids, Heads of Ayr Farm Park (25 minutes) has cuddly sheep, llamas, ponies and donkeys to keep them smiling, as well as mini-train and go-kart rides. Galloway Forest Park (half an hour) is the spot for woodland walks and games of hide and seek, and when younger kids need a bit of downtime, you can all chuff through wooded hills on the Doon Valley Railway (35 minutes).
