The road to whittlieburn

  • Scenic family-run smallholding site 10 minutes' drive from Largs
  • Within 20 minutes' drive of ferries to Great Cumbrae and Bute
  • Collect and buy fresh eggs from the flock of free-range hens on site
Some will be making a swift stopover on a Scotland tour, others looking to settle in for a lengthier Largs-based break; South Whittlieburn Farm’s owner Katie is happy to welcome all sorts of guests at her family-run Ayrshire smallholding. Bag a spot here in the stunning Brisbane Glen to share the place with the horses and ponies that graze the surrounding fields, and a flock of free-range hens that generously provide fresh eggs for guests to collect and purchase for a farm breakfast. If your own animal pal fancies coming along for the ride, dogs are welcome here – the little farm track that runs by Noddsdale Water lends itself well to paw-stretching outings. Noted those stunning views from the site? (If not, skip off to flick through pics at this point…) They give you a bit of a clue that this is a most scenic area, whether facing inland towards the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park or out to sea and the Firth of Clyde. Getting down to the seaside is fairly straightforward, as the popular resort of Largs is a 10-minute drive away – home to lots of shops and places to eat as well as a viking centre, boat trips and a splendid seaview golf course.

Electric grass tent pitch (large)

Liked It’s a lovely site & working farm, our second stay here. Katie & her family have a good set up in a great location.
5 minute drive to Largs seafront.

Disliked The Hardstanding Touring pitch we were allocated wasn’t wide enough for our awning and although Katie did cut the grass next to us the day after we arrived, our pitch was needing tidied & weeded, had lots of jaggy nettles which we had to watch the dog didn’t walk on.

From the manager: Small family run independant campsite. The vast majority of our guests appreciate what we do but unfortunately you are not one of them.

You stayed for one night with 3 people at a cost of £11.66 per person less the 15% commission given to pitchup so in fact i got £9.91 per person for you to have EHU, the use of showers and toilets and dishwashing facilities, freshwater to fill up your van if required, facilities to empty your chemical toilet, free Wifi and as I am vat registered I also pay vat on your stay. Perhaps I need to rethink my business model?

We do have signs stating quiet time is from 10pm but I appreciate weekends can sometimes be a little louder especially with people enjoying the good weather we are having.

From the manager: Very disappointed in your review when you only stayed for one night?

We have EHU, Wifi, showers and toilets, chemical disposal and yet you say our site is very basic?

As a small independent campsite I do wonder what some people expect these day? I work extremly hard and put my heart and soul and finances into this business.

Be Kind.

Electric grass tent pitch (medium)

Liked Booked a last min stay with a tent and gazebo. Knew the weather was going to be awful. Great campsite! Very child friendly.

Everyone was really friendly and welcoming. We felt really safe here (id be happy to camp alone here)

My 4 year old son loved feeding the donkeys carrots and trying say hello to the family of goats that were free roaming. The camp site is part of a working farm and there was chicken with baby chick's at time of writing, sheep and horses, there is a number of fire pits on site free to use and fire wood delivered to your tent via a quad bike with dog. Camp site has a plenty of electric hook ups for both caravans and tents (with your own 16 amp cable) with wifi available if needed. We went to Millport for the day during our stay.

Camp site is 10 mins away from Largs, although you could be anywhere as it was so peaceful and a great scenery. There is a wee coffee cart that sells rolls when its busy.

Multiple very clean toilet and shower facilities.

Excellent experience will definitely book again

Local attractions

Got the urge to flex your golfing arms? As well as the course in Largs, there are several other courses along this stretch of coastline – Royal Troon, Prestwick and Gailes Links courses are all within an hour’s drive. If you’re more into watching sports than thwacking golf balls, aim for Ayr’s racecourse (an hour’s drive away). Sticking a little closer to home, plan a bit of time in Largs – wandering along the promenade, getting into the viking spirit at the Vikingar Centre or having a bit of splash time in the swimming pool. Just outside town (15 minutes’ drive from the site) is Kelburn Castle, a mural-adorned ancient pile whose estate has a waterfall to hike to, a sculpture trail to stroll along and (shhh…) a secret forest to seek out. Looking longingly beyond Largs? Board a ferry from the harbour to the island of Great Cumbrae for bike rides and watersports, or head to Wemyss Bay (20 minutes) for the boat to Bute. Either way, keep eyes out for seals and seabirds lounging along the shoreline.
