General

  • Quiet rural site on the Cowal Peninsula 30 minutes from Dunoon
  • With spectacular views and next to mature woodland
  • Food/art trails, free wifi, communal area, playground and food shop

Off to Argyll and the Isles? Stay amidst it all in a rural location at Glendaruel Caravan Park on the Cowal Peninsula.

Less than two hours from Glasgow and about 30 minutes' drive from Dunoon, Glendaruel is in a spiffing setting to use as a base around Argyll's coast and islands: beaches, forest walks, gardens and historic attractions are all within reach and the site is surrounded by hills and farmland, ancient woodland and a wealth of wildlife. (A trip to Loch Fyne Oyster Bar is highly recommended too.)

Glendaruel has cleanly-kept toilets and showers, a playground, food and art trails, a laundry area and a covered campers' shelter with seating. There's also a food shop and free wifi.

Location - in very pretty woodland. Facilities seemed new

    Disliked:

Wasn't keen on unisex showers and there could have been more showers opened (there was 1 unisex and 1 family only). Wifi was only available if you stood outside reception. Also laundry was quite expensive at £4 per wash.

We liked everything on this site, Annie the owner was lovely and very helpful. If your looking for peace and quite then this is the place to be. Nature all around, great views, lovely walks, just go and chill out. On the Tuesday there was a fresh fruit and produce van came, couldn't fault it, we had some lovely salmon and fruit and veg from the van would recommend it. We had a little visitor every day in the form of a small bird which we found out was a meadow pipit great fun for our girls who thought it was great to be that close to nature.

A warm welcome. Hot shower, beautiful wooded site. New toilet and shower block.

    Disliked:

    Midges!

Timer in the toilet/shower meant that the lights go out quicker than expected. Shower door has no drip edge - means when you get out shower, water runs off door straight onto floor.

Directions

By car:
From Glasgow M8, take the M898 for Erskine Bridge, turn left off the bridge onto the A82. Follow A82 around Loch Lomond to Tarbet. Continue onto the A83 over the very scenic “rest and be thankful” route; take the left turn onto the A815 to Dunoon. At Strachur turn right onto the A886. Glendaruel Caravan Park lies 13 miles south of Strachur on A886.

Warning: If you are using Satellite Navigation, do not turn off the A886 onto the West Glendaruel Road. The main entrance to the park is located off the A886. Sat Nav postcode PA22 3AE brings you to the correct park entrance.

By ferry:
Leave Glasgow on the M8 and continue on the A8 to Greenock. At Greenock take the A770 and take the Western Ferries from McInroy’s Point (Gourock) to Hunter’s Quay (Dunoon). After leaving the ferry turn right and follow coastal route to a T-Junction. Turn right onto the A815, then take the left turn onto the B836. At the end of this road turn right at the T-Junction onto the A886. The park entrance is approximately 4 miles ahead on the left.

Note: If you are towing a caravan by the ferry route we do not recommend the B836 road. From the above, simply continue on the A815 to Strachur. Turn left onto the A886 and the park lies 13 miles south on the right.

From Kintyre:
Take the CalMac ferry from Tarbert to Portavadie. Leave the ferry and drive to the cross-roads at Millhouse. Continue straight ahead following the B8000 to Tighnabruaich. Continue on the road past Kames post office and down the hill. Turn left onto the A8003 towards Colintraive. Arriving at the junction with the A886 turn left towards Glendaruel. The park entrance is approximately 3 miles ahead on the left.

Local public transport:
There is a bus route which passes the park entrance and you should search for times between Dunoon and Duiletter
(the driver will drop you at the park entrance).

Local attractions

Day trips, events and attractions/activities of all sorts are around Glendaruel Caravan Park, whether your tastes tend towards walking, wildlife, cycling, historic sites, the arts or scenic drives stopping off for first-class food.

Dunoon is the main town in the area and can be reached in about half an hour's drive for shops, swimming, a cinema and the famous Cowal Highland Gathering, the biggest Highland Games in the world.

Walkies? Head out for hill walks up and down the mountains and hills of Cowal for spectacular glen and mountain views; around Argyll Forest Park or through the beaut Benmore Botanic Gardens.

Islands? The village of Colintraive a short drive away ferry links to the Isle of Bute: if you're off to this bute-iful place, take time to see the Kyles of Bute at its northern end, and Tighnabruich village, home of shinty, sailing and yachting. The marina at Portavadie has a ferry link across Loch Fyne to Kintyre.

The traditional town of Inveraray, with the ancestral home of the Duke of Argyll Inveraray Castle, a whisky shop and the museum at Inveraray Jail, is 45 minutes' drive away around the head of Loch Fyne – this is where you'll find the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar too...
