  • Swish spa and leisure resort on the eastern shores of Loch Fyne
  • A 40-minute drive from Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park
  • Cycle hire, fitness centre, indoor and outdoor pools, play area
Bag yourself a blissful break at Portavadie Loch Fyne, a spa and leisure resort on the shores of a lake in a part of the Scottish Highlands known as the ‘Secret Coast’. It’s an all-season spot with glorious views, a heated infinity pool looking out over the water, and first-rate marina facilities. The site also has restaurants, bars, shops… and an intriguing backstory. It sits on a bit of land in Argyll that was originally earmarked to become an oil rig construction facility but was never used. Nowadays, it’s a swish resort designed to appeal to all sorts of travellers, from families and couples to hikers and sailors. Spend days dipping in and out of the indoor and outdoor pools, breaking up the aquatic activities by exercising in the fitness centre, or cycling on local forest trails using one of the hired bikes. Jaunts in the car could include drives around the lush lake in Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park (40 minutes). Alternatively, stick to the site and fish on the loch or birdwatch – guests have been known to glimpse buzzards, otters and golden eagles sparking through the skies. Keen-eyed visitors have spotted basking sharks out in the water too. For beach days, the sandy sweep of Ostel Bay is a 15-minute drive.

Electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked: The Motorhome Park is yards away from the Marina and the main building which has outstanding washing, cleaning and drying facilities and the restaurant and bar is excellent which are dog and child friendly. There is also a leisure facility with an outdoor infinity pool which is great Plus you can hop on the ferry across to Tarbert at the entrance to the site

Disliked: Motorhome park although really compact and well maintained could be bigger as I’m sure will be full in the summer months

Liked: Nice facilities. Close to really lovely walks. Pleasant views from the site. Ferry terminal very nearby so a trip to tarbert was a must and it didn't disappoint.

Disliked: A bit of a walk to bins and showers and toilets. But definitely not a deal breaker.

Electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Almost everything. Great pics. Level, with water and electric. Shower facilities were great - and underfloor heating! Pool and spa were excellent. Really good outdoor infinity pool and jacuzzi. Weather was amazing too. We will definitely be back.

Disliked: No dish washing facilities, but not a big deal.

Electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked: The complex and facilities were top class, lovely shower area. Restaurant very nice, only downside is you have to book a table and as it’s a spa it does get very busy, nowhere else around to eat but they do offer takeout but expensive.

Disliked: We had trouble locating the motorhome site when we arrived and didn’t feel like we were at the right place as no visible camping signs, the motorhome area needs to be better sign posted.

Local attractions

There’s plenty on site to keep you occupied, but for days out and about head to historical structures such as the ruined Mac Ewen Castle fort (20 minutes) or the medieval Royal Castle of Tarbet (40 minutes) stronghold, then round off adventures the Scottish way with a dram or two at the Whisky West Coast distillery (40 minutes). Those eager to explore a touch further afield could bound over to the Isle of Bute (an hour and 15 minutes) for ambles around the Art Deco and Victorian architecture of palm-lined Rothesay, a town that's rather incongruously known for having some of the best public toilets in the nation. Walks are fab on Bute too – head north for strolls through a heather-strewn landscape. Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park (40 minutes) is just as scenic a destination. Wander among handsome hills and glens or find a spot to relax by one of the many lakes before pausing in Dunoon (50 minutes), one of the Firth of Clyde’s main resort towns, to take in the Victorian pier and rummage in the craft shops and galleries.
