General

  • Coastal location 400 metres from spectacular Tralee Bay beach
  • On a seven-acre croft eight miles from Oban and the island ferry
  • Boat slipway, putting green, fly fishing and chippy within half a mile

Well now, this is a pretty spectacular spot. Highfield Holidays is a seven-acre croft about eight miles from Oban on Scotland's west coast, in a peaceful rural setting within five minutes' walk of a sandy beach. The site is by the sea with views to forests and hills, surrounded by mountains, lochs, crofts and beaches... seriously, this is a pretty spectacular spot.

It's 400 metres from the croft's main gate to Tralee Bay beach (and only 200 metres to a restaurant and the Tralee Bay chippy), 10 minutes' drive to Forestry Commission marked hiking trails, and 15 to Oban and the ferry to other Highlands isles.

The site has a modern (built in 2017) shower and toilet block with four bathrooms, each with its own shower, basin and toilet. Guests can use the boat slipway, putting green and fly fishing area of the local lodge park, half a mile away.

A café and village shop are also half a mile away; pubs and restaurants are within three miles.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Luckily it was quiet as the facilities are very limited. The photo made it look like you could see the sea but you are nowhere near.

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments on our staff and shower rooms. The beach is close by, although the park is not actually on the beach, it is literally just across the road from us, no more than a 5 minute walk, if that. I will certainly, however, direct your comments about the photo which you think is misleading to the owners of Highfield.

Huge pitches, friendly staff, close to the beach and great showers/wc facilities. Great location to visit the surrounding area. Great chippy down the road !
Thoroughly enjoyed our week , bar the last night !......

    Disliked:

No washing up facilities ( understand this is being addressed) and kept awake most of the night on our last night from dogs barking at the neighbouring property - appreciate this is beyond the owners control to some extent but maybe it needs approaching with the neighbour - it made for a very long 6 hour drive home on very little sleep !

From the manager...

Thank you for the review and your comments about the park.

We are really very sorry about the dogs barking, this was actually a problem we had earlier in the season. We have approached our neighbour on a number of occasions and thought the problem had been resolved. This is obviously not the case and we will be talking with our neighbour again to see if this issue can be resolved.

Not suitable for motorhomes 10/09/2018

The Warden was very helpful and pleasant.

    Disliked:

We booked a "Fully-serviced gravel touring pitch", but when we arrived discovered that it didn't have any grey water disposal on the pitch. Not only that but the Warden explained that there was no motorhome waste disposal facility on the site and all he could do was lend us a bucket to take the water to the disposal point. That was utterly ludicrous, as we had intended to erect an awning and not move the van for three days, which would have meant taking up to 75 bucket loads to the disposal which we guessed was about 300 mtrs away. On the booking request we asked for a pitch close to the disabled toilet, but the "serviced" pitches are the furthest away from the toilet block. The pitch was close to very tall trees and we couldn't get a signal for the TV. There was no security on the site (even a barrier) and our pitch was the closest to the road. We can't understand how this site has been given such rave reviews when it's obviously still under construction. Despite having paid £66 for a three night stay, we couldn't stay there and had to go elsewhere. The website description was totally misleading and a breach of the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review and feedback, and we are sorry to hear that you are unhappy with your experience at Highfield Holidays.

The information on Pitch Up’s website is not intended to be misleading. Pitch Up uses the term ‘fully-serviced’ for a pitch that has both water and electricity points. Grey water disposal is considered to be an additional feature and you need to check this section to see if it is available.

Our site is not under construction but complete and operational. As you may be aware from previous reviews and responses, we will be installing the drive- over grey waste disposal (and dishwashing facilities) this winter.

As far as security is concerned, we are blessed by the fact that we are in an incredibly safe area and do not require a security barrier.

We are more than happy to refund you the £66 as you didn’t stay on the pitch you had booked.

Quietness and cleanliness of site. Location of site with easy access for units and very convenient for touring...only 9 miles from Oban. Just the right distance fromthe village with its amenities. Proximity to beach for walks and bathing also nearness of Tralee Bay Holiday Park for extra facilities if required. Pitch prices very reasonable. Warden (Kenny) was around and about keeping an eye on things without being obtrusive and was very helpful when someone inadvertently took our pitch for one night! We hope to come back next year if we can.

    Disliked:

Nothing really but we feel that the toilet/showers would struggle to cope if the site had been busy...not really enough for 60 pitches if they had all been occupied. However they were kept spotless and we never had a problem . We are aware that this is a new site so we can understand the fairly basic provision. The other issue is a lack of a drive-over grey waste drain...important for motorhome users. I bought a bucket to be able to drain my grey water tank...not a major problem but messy. Caravanners would be ok as they mostly have a "Waste Hog" but we don't carry one. Also water points not at every pitch and not always easy to access for motorhome...(no prob for caravanners with their "Aquarolls")

From the manager...

Thank you for your good review. More than a few customers have mentioned the drive-over grey waste matter and we are taking note of what people are commenting on. We need to get things right, so are very grateful for constructive comments where we can improve. Hopefully over the winter we can put everybody's comments together and improve the park for the next season. Again, thank you.

What a good review, thank you very much. Not just from Highfield, but from the other local businesses. There is actually a "book swap" up at Tralee Bay Holidays as well, there are also lots of games for the children that Highfield customers are welcome to have a loan of.

The The grounds are very neat and clean, one of the best we have come across. All waste receptacles / grey water etc very clearly marked and segratgated. Ablutions were very clean and well maintained, plenty of hot water. Wifi was great too. Very quiet site!

    Disliked:

We were greeted by a freindlty and informative site manager. Upon arrival there were only about 6 sites taken (etsimnated less than 10%) and it stayed this way for the three days we were there. We requested a flat site closest to the beach. We were told that because we were registered through Pitchup, we were pre-allocated a site. Our site was right next to another couple and on a slope, and could not have been much further from the beach. Not sure why Pitchup is treated differently in this way? When our neighbours moved off, our new neighbours arrived, again directly adjacent to us, whilst the site was still largely empty?

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. With regard to your comments about the pitch you were allocated, we take note of what you say.

Nice and peaceful site. Lots of space. Kevin, the warden, gave us a warm welcome and several useful information, much appreciated. Kids loved to have the sheep next to the site, they spent a lot of time feeding them with grass. Facilities are new, comfortable and very clean. As mentioned on other reviews, dish washing facilities are missing but if addressed along with continuous improvements this site has a lot of potential to become one of the best.
