General

  • Coastal location 400 metres from spectacular Tralee Bay beach
  • On a seven-acre croft eight miles from Oban and the island ferry
  • Boat slipway, putting green, fly fishing and chippy within half a mile

Well now, this is a pretty spectacular spot. Highfield Holidays is a seven-acre croft about eight miles from Oban on Scotland's west coast, in a peaceful rural setting within five minutes' walk of a sandy beach. The site is by the sea with views to forests and hills, surrounded by mountains, lochs, crofts and beaches... seriously, this is a pretty spectacular spot.

It's 400 metres from the croft's main gate to Tralee Bay beach (and only 200 metres to a restaurant and the Tralee Bay chippy), 10 minutes' drive to Forestry Commission marked hiking trails, and 15 to Oban and the ferry to other Highlands isles.

The site has a modern (built in 2017) shower and toilet block with four bathrooms, each with its own shower, basin and toilet. Guests can use the boat slipway, putting green and fly fishing area of the local lodge park, half a mile away.

A café and village shop are also half a mile away; pubs and restaurants are within three miles.

Very Peaceful and relaxing with a lovely wee walk to the beautiful beach bay.
Lucky to get such lovely weather on Friday evening and Saturday, only a few wee showers. Not bad for October!!

Problem with dogs barking lot at the property next door. Don't know if they were left alone and needing attention or hungry!

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to give Highfield your review. Your comments are much appreciated. The dogs in the property next to the park are working dogs and we are very much aware of the barking. The owners of Highfield are having ongoing conversations to try and come to some satisfactory solution.

    Gravel pitch ending up inside

From the manager...

Thank you for your review and your comments regarding the local restaurant. I am not sure what we can do about the gravel. These pitches are popular when the weather is not so good, and there is some ideas about putting more hard-stands on the park for next year.

The site was easy to find and after a couple of attempts at phoning the warden we were welcomed by a lovely lady who gave us all the information we needed for our stay both about the site and local amenities such as fish & chips, the pink shop in the village and walked us to our pitch, lovely touch I thought. Despite being a holiday weekend for Glasgow the site was all but empty of tourers so there was room a plenty, in fact there is plenty of room between hard standing pitches in any case. The serviced pitch had electric and water, grey waste was moments away and chemical waste was a minute or so away. There was no tv point on the pitch but TV reception was apparently hit and miss in the area, the signal coming from the island of Mull, in any case we found the wi-fi provided ample access to TV with no problems connecting and little in the way of interuption. The village with garage, convenience store (pink shop) and outdoor / caravan spares was minutes away by car. Also a couple of minutes away is a fish and chip shop, super fish & chips, and a restaurant (we didn't eat at the restaurant). The site isn't beach side but is a 10 minute walk or so from a fairly sandy beach and dunes with super views, however the site does have nice views of the hills, both local and distant. The site sits next to a croft / smallholding with some sheep, cows and ponies all visible. Some reviews refer to a noisy dog locally, there was a vocal dog fairly local to the site but it was only heard during the day and wasn't an issue at night at all, in fact the dog could be heard well away from the site. Highfields isn't exactly an all singing all dancing site but it's in a lovely location with friendly wardens and is one we'd go back to when visiting Oban or the islands.

Local attractions

Being this close to the coast, it’s a given that your first outing (weather permitting) should be to toddle off to Tralee beach for a breath of salty sea air. It’ll only take you a few minutes to wander down there for a smashing stroll through the sand dunes and shingle. There’s a play park down there for the nippers and a café for a warming cup of hot choc if it’s a tad breezy.

Intrepid types can plunge deep beneath the surface here to dive the wreck of the SS Breda, a cargo ship bombed in 1940; have a word with one of the dive centres in Oban (15 minutes’ drive away) to set up scuba adventures. While you’re in Oban you can read a bit more about the area’s wartime history at the Oban War & Peace Museum and raise a toast to a calmer future with a dram at the Oban Distillery.

When you’re done with town time, make for Dunstaffnage Castle (15 minutes’ drive), a ruined waterside castle with some cracking sea views. You’ll get heaps of sea views on a Sealife Adventures boat trip round the Firth of Lorne (40 minutes) too – and with any luck, you’ll also be treated to sightings of dolphins, seals and basking sharks.

Must see

  • Glencoe Visitor Centre (16.2 miles)
  • West Highland Museum (24.8 miles)
  • Treasures of the Earth (26.2 miles)
