Deuchar Farm: No words

General

  • Well-maintained field with adjacent forest for dog walkers
  • Glamis Castle 20 minutes' drive; half an hour to Montrose or beaches
  • Working farm with far-reaching views; fresh eggs available

This friendly farm site in the Angus countryside is a canny pick for travellers looking for family-friendly breaks in central Scotland.

Deuchar Farm near Fern is easy to access by road and has toilet facilities, making breaks here just that little bit easier than classic wild camping. Fresh eggs are sold on the farm too – just the ticket for your morning frying pan…

The surrounding area is appealing indeed, with far-reaching views over rolling farmland and the gorgeous Angus Glens to the north. The seaside towns and sandy beaches of Scotland's east coast are also easy to visit from here, with many accessible within about half an hour's drive.

Closer to base, there’s a 20-acre forest adjacent to the site where dog walkers will find plenty of trails to keep their four-legged friends exercised. Need a bit of entertainment while on site? Keeping the kids busy should be easy, whatever the weather, as there are plenty of games and bits to borrow – including a large football goal, a badminton set, a rounders set, a frisbee, some dominoes and giant playing cards for damp days.

The nearest sizeable town with convenience stores and a fish and chip shop is Forfar (20 minutes).

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

    The view was nice

    Disliked:

Electric hookup field is on a steep slope which isn't accessible in a rear wheel drive van. We had to use the non-electric/camping field, where the grass hadn't been cut and was around knee height, meaning your legs got soaked every time you were outside. The toilets were portaloos, which were revolting and only 1 of the 3 were working properly. No contact at all from owners, even though we had told them we were moving location due to not accessing the hookup field. Price was very expensive for what was provided.

From the manager...

We are a working farm, pop up campsite as described, we do not mow grass in our fields. We are providing a site for wild camping, sorry we cannot provide a lawn.

Unfortunately the weekend you arrived we had 4 inches of rain which made field access difficult for rear wheel drive vehicles. This was totally out with our control however we are looking to move the electric hook up pitches into the main camping field in time for next summer to try and help alleviate this issue for our visitors.

You did have contact with us regarding your move to the alternative site.

The toilet issue has already been addressed in response to previous reviews.

Situation of the campsite and the space available

    Disliked:

Toilets were one portaloo which obviously hadnt been replaced for a considerable time as it was overflowing and unsanitory. a sign on the door said it was to be used for a maximum of seven people for one week which looking at the state of it obviously hadnt been the case. I reported this to the farmers wife who said they had been really busy over the weekend and would get her husband to replace it with one that was up at the farm. about an hour later he appeared with a tractor with a portaloo on the front loader which half way down he hill fell off impacting heavily on the road. The portaloo was picked up by the tractor and dumped at an angle beside the original The driver then drove away without inspecting inside the toilet. My wife went to look to see if she could use the portaloo and was confronted by a smashed up toilet with faeces all inside the toilet area. We drove to Tesco in Forfar some seven miles away to use the toilets there. Others ere usinating in the field as best they could.
on top of all this as we drove in we passed several bins completely overflowing with bags of rubbsh that had not been emptied.
All in all the experience was more of refuge camp that campsite. £20 wasted

From the manager...

Thank you for your time this afternoon to discuss this review.

We have taken many measures to ensure we are a Covid safe environment including providing hand sanitiser and signage to encourage visitors to use this before and after using the toilet facilities. Visitors also have access to huge pitches (approx 2 acres each!) with no need to come in contact with other people as we offer contactless check in. The title of this review is factually incorrect.

As you were made aware we were let down by the hire company who were unable to empty the portaloos as scheduled which did result in a blockage during your stay. This was totally out with our control however we did manage to provide an alternative portaloo until the hire company arrived to rectify the problem.

I wish to reassure guests that this matter was fully dealt with as quickly as it could be. We have 3 fully functioning portaloos on site which are cleaned regularly!

With regards to the bins, these are emptied weekly.

We did indeed have a problem with the toilet facilities during your stay. This was out with our control as the hire company were unable to empty the toilets as scheduled. This was rectified ASAP.

Back-to-basics rural camping with plenty of space09/08/2021

I really enjoyed the back-to-basics set up on a working farm that was also comfortable and had everything that I needed. The large field meant that I could pitch my tent away from others and appreciate the rural atmosphere, but still have just a short walk to the water tap and portaloos. I also appreciated that I could just arrive and pitch up, and that there was information on a sign if I needed it but I didn't need to check in, it was very relaxed and stress-free. If you like the idea of wild camping but can't hike far carrying gear, or would prefer to have a few other folk around and basic toilet/water facilities, then this would be a great place to stay.
