Glenesk Caravan Park: Pitch by the water

General

  • Wildlife haven and woodland park with fishing loch on site
  • Within easy driving distance of beaches and Cairngorms National Park
  • Reception lounge, games room and playground

Angling for some Angus fishing? Pitch up at glorious Glenesk Caravan Park and cast off at its loch in the middle, stocked to the gills with mirror and common carp, tench and roach – then pack your rod for salmon and trout fishing on the nearby River North Esk.

Not angling for Angus fishing? Leave the fisherfolk to it and settle down to species spotting from the loch shore, wander around the unspoilt woodland of this wildlife haven park or tackle the (b)reams of hill hikes within walking distance.

Sandy beaches, city shopping, the Cairngorms National Park and the Scottish Whisky Trail are all within driving distance – once you’ve wrestled your other half from the rod, of course…

If the weather decides not to acknowledge that you’re on holiday, Glenesk has a reception lounge with telly and an indoor games room for you to lounge around/get competitive in; when it’s sunny, the well-equipped park playground should keep the kids occupied while you get on with the serious business of fishing/lying by the loch spotting red squirrels.

Park amenities include a heated toilet block, hot showers (a small charge applies for the use of the shower), covered dishwashing area and separate laundry room. The small tuck shop sells basic essentials and camping gas, and can arrange to have your morning papers and other bits and pieces delivered over the weekend.

Please note

A charge of £0.20 applies for the use of the shower.

The restaurant is open between 29/04 and 31/10.

The café is open from Wednesday to Sunday.

Great location, level pitches,30/07/2021

Great location. Level pitches easy to drive in and out of with the motorhome. We had a lovely pitch facing the loch and enjoyed watching the wildlife. Lots of points to get drinking water. Plenty of bins for food and non recyclable waste and crates for bottle recycling. Chemical waste point in an obvious, easily accessible spot. Friendly staff. Given the forest setting it was great to see fire pits were available.

I wish there was a maybe option for revisiting and recommending. I might recommend but it would be with some reservation given the points I’ve listed in the dislikes section. I might also revisit but only for a couple of nights as a longer stay would be ruled for us because of the same points.

    Disliked:

What lets this site down in the Toilet/amenities block. As the site is in a forest setting with the pitches being clearings in the trees and the access roads being essentially forest tracks everyone going into the toilets has dirty/muddy feet. There was one small mat inside the entrance to the ladies but this wasn’t enough to help keep the floors clean. Perhaps more matting both inside and outside the doors might help. Maybe a request not to wear outdoor shoes in the shower area? To be fair to the cleaners the wash hand basins and actual toilets did look pretty clean but I think the building is so dated and in need of a refurb that the cleaners could spend all day every day in them without making a visible difference.
The one washing machine is in the ladies toilet, no chance of getting clean clothes for guys travelling on their own. It looked as though the back of this area was the back of the toilet block. Could a door be made there and the door in the toilets locked up?
The dish-wash sink was at the rear of the block and there was no shelter at all from the elements. Anyway of adding some kind of canopy to at least keep the rain off?

Finally we couldn’t find the grey waste disposal point. I went to reception to ask but there was no one around. If there is one maybe some signage would help.

We had the most amazing time here. 3 mums with children ranging from 13 to 2. We had three tents pitched near to the park area. The campsite was clean and the showers and toilet area within easy walking distance. We bought a fire pit for our stay and firewood which was well worth the little money. The owner couldn't do anymore for us as one night the three 11 year olds had trouble with the showers and she was with them getting the water hot for them and was very helpful. A very happy cheery women who couldn't do enough for us. Great location for edzell, Blue door walk and surrounding area. We will be back definitely as was our first camping trip as families for some of us and we felt the kids were very safe in this campsite to be able to go on small walks around the site. Even had WiFi near the office area which was a bonus for the 13 year olds 🤣. Thank you so much for the great hospitality. Hope to see you very soon.

The scenery and the tranquility of the area. So relaxed. The freedom (which can become a negative). Didn’t try the eating facilities. Close to Edsel, etc for amenities.

    Disliked:

The basic facilities. Access is not controlled so people pitching late at night. Not everyone followed the site rules of dogs on leads. More a frustration than a negative.

Local attractions

Several walks and hills are within easy walking distance; lace up your boots and walk forth, or ask the Glenesk Caravan Park for recommendations for walks, activities and attractions nearby and around the area.

Glenesk has hill walks for all abilities from the faint-hearted to the confidently striding and all sorts in between. The Hill of Rowan walk from the Tarfside car park should make a peaceful compromise as it’s a doable four and a half miles long, and easy to navigate given that the huge memorial of the top of the Hill of Rowan can be seen for miles around.

Make some time for a stroll to Edzell too, lined with 19th-century buildings and called the ‘jewel of the glens’ for its prettiness – in this part of Scotland, that’s quite a moniker… The start of the main street is marked by Dalhousie Arch: pass under here to browse shops, antique establishments, cafés, tearooms and restaurants.

Castles, historic houses and gardens abound in Angus and neighbouring Aberdeenshire, with most open to the public from Easter onwards. Glamis Castle, setting of the Scottish play, has guided tours, exhibitions and an Italian garden, and the Queen’s pad Balmoral is an enviable look at the lives of the royals and part of the Aberdeenshire castle trail (of which there are a mighty 17).

Must see

  • Glamis Castle (19.9 miles)
  • Carnoustie (23.8 miles)
  • Balmoral Castle (24.8 miles)
