Pitch by the water

General

  • Wildlife haven and woodland park with fishing loch on site
  • Within easy driving distance of beaches and Cairngorms National Park
  • Reception lounge, games room and playground

Angling for some Angus fishing? Pitch up at glorious Glenesk Caravan Park and cast off at its loch in the middle, stocked to the gills with mirror and common carp, tench and roach – then pack your rod for salmon and trout fishing on the nearby River North Esk.

Not angling for Angus fishing? Leave the fisherfolk to it and settle down to species spotting from the loch shore, wander around the unspoilt woodland of this wildlife haven park or tackle the (b)reams of hill hikes within walking distance.

Sandy beaches, city shopping, the Cairngorms National Park and the Scottish Whisky Trail are all within driving distance – once you’ve wrestled your other half from the rod, of course…

If the weather decides not to acknowledge that you’re on holiday, Glenesk has a reception lounge with telly and an indoor games room for you to lounge around/get competitive in; when it’s sunny, the well-equipped park playground should keep the kids occupied while you get on with the serious business of fishing/lying by the loch spotting red squirrels.

Park amenities include a heated toilet block, hot showers (a small charge applies for the use of the shower), covered dishwashing area and separate laundry room. The small tuck shop sells basic essentials and camping gas, and can arrange to have your morning papers and other bits and pieces delivered over the weekend.

Please note

A charge of £0.20 ($0.25) applies for the use of the shower.

The restaurant is open between 04/01 and 10/31.

The café is open from Wednesday to Sunday.

The woodland, slightly rustic setting and watching the ducks at the pond. The manager was very helpful and friendly. We were pleased to have the wooded area out the back of the site for a morning walk with the dog. It was also great to be able to access the Blue door walk easily and use this route to walk into Edzell for lunch. We enjoyed a visit to Loch Lee (at the end of the glen) and cycling the rough track beside the loch - beautiful and also a great spot for walking!

Lovely, picturesque site in a great location. Very quiet and peaceful. Friendly welcome from lady on duty. Glenesk walk by the riverside is a must!

    Disliked:

Facilities are a bit dated but they were quiet and kept clean. Both good during Covid situation. Wifi service was fine near reception but not so good at our pitch, but fine to give up on the mobile for a night or two.

Beautiful spot, really feels like you're in the amongst the forest rather than some sites that are basically just an open field. We opted for a pitch right by the pond, lovely to watch the ducks and even saw a kingfisher a couple of times.
Nice walk in the woods and out into a field with another pond.

    Disliked:

Toilet block was a bit dated and very cold, radiator didn't seem to be on/working.

  • Liked:

The general atmosphere of the park. The space between pitches separated by trees and greenery. The fabulous woodland surroundings for the kids to play in and explore. The convenience of a cafe in a relatively small park. The relaxed, friendly and helpful attitude of the staff. The ability to light fires if you wish and not having plastic printed rules stuck everywhere in sight. A feeling of being welcome and being encouraged to make use of and enjoy the loch and surroundings of the park. A real home from home feel about this friendly and peaceful site. Incredibly scenic river walks and picnic spots yards from the campsite. WiFi at the cafe. Free to bring an awning. Excellent value for money.

    Disliked:

Push taps at some of the water points. Some of the hard standing loch side pitches, although beautiful spots, were too soft and muddy. Would prefer more accessible grey water drainage point rather than having to lift waste tank up into chemical funnel.

Unfortunately I cannot write a review, as the day before we were going, my wife wasnt feeling too well and in view of the impending weather forecast, we decided that it would not be a pleasant weekend experience.
We had stayed at the site many years ago and can only guess that it has improved from a good site to an excellent one over those 30 or so years.

Local attractions

Several walks and hills are within easy walking distance; lace up your boots and walk forth, or ask the Glenesk Caravan Park for recommendations for walks, activities and attractions nearby and around the area.

Glenesk has hill walks for all abilities from the faint-hearted to the confidently striding and all sorts in between. The Hill of Rowan walk from the Tarfside car park should make a peaceful compromise as it’s a doable four and a half miles long, and easy to navigate given that the huge memorial of the top of the Hill of Rowan can be seen for miles around.

Make some time for a stroll to Edzell too, lined with 19th-century buildings and called the ‘jewel of the glens’ for its prettiness – in this part of Scotland, that’s quite a moniker… The start of the main street is marked by Dalhousie Arch: pass under here to browse shops, antique establishments, cafés, tearooms and restaurants.

Castles, historic houses and gardens abound in Angus and neighbouring Aberdeenshire, with most open to the public from Easter onwards. Glamis Castle, setting of the Scottish play, has guided tours, exhibitions and an Italian garden, and the Queen’s pad Balmoral is an enviable look at the lives of the royals and part of the Aberdeenshire castle trail (of which there are a mighty 17).

Must see

  • Glamis Castle (19.8 miles)
  • Carnoustie (23.7 miles)
  • Balmoral Castle (25.0 miles)
