  • Luxury adults-only site a five-minute drive from Carnoustie
  • A short drive from three major golf courses; 20 minutes from Dundee
  • Dog-friendly; near to hiking paths; bar on site
Planning a coastal holiday adventure in Scotland but can’t find a site that will welcome your four-legged companion? You might want to consider staying at Barry Downs Park, an adults-only site between the towns of Monifieth and Carnoustie (five minutes’ drive to either), on the Firth of Tay, an area that (seemingly) receives the lowest rainfall in the country. In addition to paved and well-lit level paths, the luxury site has spacious (and well-spaced out) pitches, which result in a blissfully peaceful and private vibe. However, if you’re in the mood for socialising, there’s a bar where you can meet your fellow guests and exchange ideas for day trips, excursions and the best beaches for dog walks. If the weather is kind (and that ‘lowest rainfall’ statistic ought to be reason for optimism…), then the hikes here can be truly spectacular, whether you head to the coast or inland. Monifieth Beach (five minutes) is a vast expanse of sand with far-reaching views across to the other side of the firth and good birdwatching (you might spot curlews and dunlins here). Dog-friendly Crombie Country Park (10 minutes) has forested walks around a reservoir. This is also a top area to go golfing: there is a golf course 10 minutes' walk away and two within a five-minute drive. The famed St Andrews Old Course is also within a 40-minute drive of the site.

Electric gravel touring pitch

Liked Quiet and peaceful

Disliked Pitches aren't that big not as advertised, toilet and shower facilities are dated although spotless no decent walk's for you and your dog unless you're willing to dice with death on the country road good for a one night stop hence the reason we were the only tourer there everything else was seasonal

Electric gravel touring pitch

Liked Pitches, peace and quiet, lovely small site (touring section) not far to toilets and showers. Loads of toilets! Shower good and wasn't one of the push button ones so ideal. Husband went to bar, said was lovely. We got taxis to brought ferry and was lovely there for the evening.
Good to go into town if you want an evening out or day shopping or stay and enjoy the peace at the park. Really liked it... Especially after visiting some larger parks which were noisy until 3am ... We will definitely be back!

There was kids on site when we were there but I can't complain as they were hardly noticed!! Genuinely didn't cause any issues at all.

Disliked No activities or regular entertainment but after visiting a few busier parks we actually preferred Barry downs for its peace!!
The ability to have a BBQ would have been nice -only complaint

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The hot shower was the only one

Disliked Extremely unsuitable for a tent. Why? No possibility to charge your iPhone or power pack in the bathroom. To shower, you have to leave your clothes in the bathroom. The campsite is expensive for what it offers. There are no signs at the taps indicating which is drinkable and which is grey water. The campsite pays much more attention to large caravans. No, an absolute letdown, and you really won't want to come here again.

Liked Nice quiet site. Easy check in.

Disliked Not a big issue for us but water at my pitch would have been nice. There is water available and easily accessible. Just a minor problem from my experience.

Electric gravel touring pitch

Liked Had a good night in the pub, playing bingo with some of the residents of the retirement homes, once it was open. Nice hot shower with good water pressure. The beach between Barry and Broughty Ferry Castle is great.

Disliked The site advertised a pub, turns out it's not open Monday and Tuesday's. When you have specifically booked it over another site, due to it having a pub, that's a major disappointment and should be stated on the site. The touring spots seem like an add on to the main reason for the area which is the retirement homes. There is a lot of traffic all day going backwards and forwards all day. Walks in the area are a long walk away and the roads are bad for walking on. Showers flooded.

Local attractions

Barry Mill (five minutes’ drive) is a working water-powered oatmeal mill dating from the early 19th century. What’s perhaps most surprising about this early industrial structure is its setting: surrounded by luxuriant vegetation and wildflower meadows. The stream that fuels the mill is home to birds such as herons and kingfishers. Although Arbroath Abbey (15 minutes) now lies in ruins, it’s not difficult to imagine how magnificent this 12th-century monastic complex must have looked in its heyday. The Declaration of Arbroath, defending Robert the Bruce to the pope who had excommunicated him, was drafted here in 1320. When in Dundee (20 minutes), make sure to visit the V&A Dundee, a design museum housed in a spectacular contemporary building on the banks of the River Tay. Also on the riverfront is HMS Unicorn, a 19th-century ship that hosts maritime-themed exhibitions, while the McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum occupies a splendid neo-Gothic building.
