General

  • Friendly family site in a traditional Irish village
  • Close to pubs, shops and miles of country walks
  • Disabled access and free wifi

Marvellous marvellous Mayo… the Connaught county home to Achill Island, Knock Shrine, Ballina and fishing for plump salmon on the marvellous River Moy… surfing, kitesurfing and diving off the coast or horse riding along it… country walks all around... and nights/meals out in Westport and Castlebar… if you've never been, you'll likely like Mayo very much indeed.

And if you fancy seeing what a trad little Mayo village feels like, make your Mayo stay and west of Ireland base at friendly , as it's set in teeny Carra ('Mayo's tidiest village') in the south of the county. The village is home to a mere 200 residents and everyone knows everyone else, but fret not: you'll still get a most warm Mayo welcome when you first show your face in the local pub….

The park has a new amenities block with disabled access, and a small campers' kitchen with fridge and kettle. A convenience store, two of those friendly Mayo pubs, a butcher's, a church and a petrol station are within 200 metres. The village fishery area and the sports centre to play badminton, handball and racquetball are popular with campers coming to Carra too.

's speciality is the wealth of countryside walks available straight from its site: ask the staff for tips and maps to set you on your way. And bring the pooch along for walks too, as Carra (campsite and village) is pet-friendly.

Please note

A charge of 1€ applies for the use of shower.

I'll be honest when we first arrived I thought to myself 'ok let's go somewhere else' but after setting up camp we realized we had tons of space all to ourselves, the campground is run by really great people, the town is lovely and the owner of the shop down the road was extremely helpful and friendly, the bathrooms were clean, there is a lovely park for dogs to run around just down the road, and it's a great distance away from Westport! We will definitely be back again!

    Disliked:

Not a dislike- but bring wellies if you want dry feet walking to the bathroom.

We didn't stay due to proximity of road. 31/07/2017

Nice village feel however there were building works at a building within 50 meters.

    Disliked:

Having paid deposit online, we travelled from Dublin by road. Following GPS directions we arrived at what we'd consider not to be the most serene location for a campsite. A small petrol station / post office at the entrance, which would undoubtedly be busy with traffic throughout the day. The campsite boundary was also next to a roadway which led to two houses, again being a source of vehiclular traffic throughout the day. The green area assigned to the camping area is quite small (perhaps other fields are also assigned to campers during busier periods), but for us it was a little two small, and definitely too close to the roadway leading to the aforementioned houses. We didn't interact with the owner/management and we didn't check out the shower block etc as we decided not to pitch our tent primarily due to proximity of the roadway. We instead found another campsite online 'Keel caravan and camping' on Achill island, a little over an hour drive further West. Now that campsite was something to write about. Large, plenty of pitches, electrical points if so required, on the beach, a fairground for children to pass a few hours if you have children with you. Nice restaurants nearby. Activities galore. Phenomenal scenery. I'm certain 'Cara ' campsite has plenty to offer, but the adjacent roadway to the properties wasn't for us.

Nothing about this site. Wouldn't recommend to anyone

    Disliked:

Children hurtling round site on bikes. No control by site owners on the camp site what so ever. Tents camping within 3mts of our caravan. Noisy. People can pitch where they like. If you like a site where children are allowed to run riot and play whatever they want with no one to control them then this is the site for you.for c

Local attractions

Lots and lots to do around these parts, so base yourself at for a week or two and get stuck straight in.

The country walks that are so splendid around here include the peaceful and relaxing Riverside Loop Walk, an hour's worth of ambling through fields and farmland. Visit the Eviction Cottage on the way, where the last eviction in Belcarra took place in 1886; the building is now a museum and heritage centre. (And did you know that the word 'boycott' became a verb in Co Mayo, after Captain Charles Boycott who was shunned by locals after attempting to evict 11 of them from his land...?)

Achill Island, Croagh Patrick and Ceide Fields are within easy driving distance, as is Ballintobber Abbey, the National Museum of Irish Country Life and Moorehall Forest Park (both eight kilometres away), Westport House (18km) and Knock Shrine (20km).

Mayo's county town Castlebar is eight kilometres from Carra and has a theatre, golf course and swimming pool alongside the usual pubs, shops and restaurants.
