General

  • In the Connemara countryside in Quiet Man country
  • Mini cinema, barbecue area, sitting room and playground
  • Discount vouchers for local cafés and restaurants

Did you know that John Wayne film The Quiet Man was filmed in the small Irish village of Cong among the Connemara countryside? If you don't, you do now – and if you've never seen the film, you will here, as it's shown every night in town in the village's Quiet Man cinema.

Cong is fairly famed in other ways for such a small village: it's the setting of Cong Abbey, where Ireland's last High King spent his final years, and of Ashford Castle, the medieval fortification updated in Victorian times and used along with the village in that film of John Wayne. (And Oscar Wilde's dad lived in town for a time too.)

If you're anything like us and now want to stay in Cong with some immediacy, make for Cong Caravan and Camping Park a mile from the village. Set on the borders of counties Mayo and Galway and between Lough Mask and Lough Corrib, it's the nearest camping and caravan park to Ashford Castle and is on the only public road to Lough Corrib.

Site facilities include a kitchen and a barbecue area available for guests, a sitting room, a(nother) mini cinema, a playground, a small shop, and a freezer in which to stash any catches landed at the surrounding rivers. Local information and maps are available on site as well as discount vouchers for local cafés and restaurants.

My husband and I stayed here for 5 days in June as part of our tour of the west coast of Ireland. The site was superbly located for the Wild Atlantic Way, Connemara Park, and the local area which also has some lovely walks and sites - and it was actually once to be able to get out on foot to tour around Ashford Castle and Lough Corrib being within 15mins walking distance). The site owners and staff. were extremely friendly and helpful. The site also had excellent facilities, including a mini cinema (playing DVDs on a big TV screen), siting room, launderette, etc, all to an exceptionally high quality and very clean. We were there with our touring van, lovely pitches and idyllically peaceful; therefore we weren't at the hostel, but could see into the kitchen and dining facilities for that which were also excellent. Would definitely recommend a stay at Cong Caravan and Camping. :-)

Not being able to adjust the temperature of the shower; my husband thought they were fine but they were a little too hot for me - though do remember the showers were good, very clean, and free (noting in all the there places we stayed the was a charge for showers - sometimes as high as 2 Euros!)

Very quiet place with excellent facilities. The hosts were fantastic, warm and welcoming. Place it in walking distance from Cong village, with a number of locations where you can eat/drink or just spend a quality time. Kids playground could use a revamp, wifi although free was very temperamental. Showers (not free) offered mildly warm water most of the time (probably due to large number of guests).

Local attractions

Cong, glorious Cong... see the sights of this pretty village before getting into the Connemara countryside around Cong Caravan and Camping Park. We've already mentioned the cinema, Ashford Castle and Cong Abbey, but you'll also find the Quiet Man Cottage Museum (of course) with replica sets from the film, and an old Celtic cross in the village centre.

Fishing is available nearby (also of course), along with boat hire, walks of forest, riverside and lakeside around Lough Corrib and Lough Mask, lake cruises, horse riding and pony trekking, falconry, bike hire and golf. Ghost tours are to hand too if you feel up for it: ask the Cong Caravan team or in the village for details.

Many Co Mayo or Galway caves, castles, stone circles and cairns are within easy driving distance along with the lovely landscape of Connemara, and both Galway and Westport are close for urban days out: if you're in Galway, do have the mussels.
