  • Cosy ensuite glamping pods on the edge of the village of Burtonport
  • Ferries to Arranmore and Inishfree five minutes' drive away
  • Café on site with local seafood and vegetarian dishes available
Ever heard of the Wild Atlantic Way, the 1600-mile driving route that runs down the west coast of Ireland? There’s a reason why this coastline has attracted such a name – this is rugged and untamed scenery, with spectacular landscapes all around and heaps of wildlife to spot. You can get a fabulous taste of the northern end of this dramatic coast when you stay at Wheelhouse Pods, a peaceful Co. Donegal glamping site just on the edge of the village of Burtonport. You’ll be about 15 minutes’ walk/five minutes’ drive from the coastline itself here – that should be just enough to give you a bit of shelter from the ocean winds while still putting you within easy reach of the village harbour (for ferries to Arranmore and Inishfree or fishing/sightseeing boat trips). Being just on the edge of the village is also a handy place to be for easy access to a pub, restaurant and café – although you won’t have to go that far if you don’t want to, as there’s a café on site as well, serving up local seafood as well as vegetarian dishes. Self catering is a possibility too, as each pod has a kitchen corner with microwave, fridge and kettle. Pick up supplies for that at the supermarket 10 minutes’ drive away in Dungloe. There are plenty more handy things provided in these well-furnished pods too – each one has a double bed and sofa bed (with bed linen included), an ensuite shower room and a satellite TV. Heating and double glazing keeps things cosy inside, but hopefully you’ll be able to make use of the outdoor seating, which has been set up to make the most of the lovely lakeside views…

Local attractions

Many visitors come to this area for its proximity to the islands of Inishfree and Arranmore – both of them wild and captivating places with much interest for anglers, walkers, birdwatchers and sea kayakers. Ferries to the islands depart from the harbour in Burtonport (five minutes’ drive/15 minutes’ walk). Also at the harbour are sea angling boat trips, and pleasure cruises that take you out to see some of the wildlife and landscapes of the coast from the water. If you’d like to propel yourselves across the water (or get under the surface), head to Maghery Strand (15 minutes’ drive), where a watersports centre organises paddleboarding, kayaking and scuba diving. Sticking to dry land can be just as rewarding, though, if you plan a coastal drive taking in things like Crohy Head Sea Arch (20 minutes), Horn Head (50 minutes) and the Slieve League cliffs (50 minutes), or head inland a little to Glenveagh National Park (half an hour).
