  • Dog-friendly wildlife haven with a river and ancient woodland
  • A 10-minute drive from Gortin Glen Forest Park and Glenpark Estate
  • Homemade ice cream available on site; salmon fishing
With 30 acres of ancient woodland and a river for salmon fishing, Sessile Oak Wild Camping is nothing short of a wildlife haven. Pitch up deep in the woods or on top of the hill – either way, you’ll have mighty-fine views, plenty of peace and wildlife all around. This wild camping site is all about leaving no trace and there’s a strict rule that you shouldn’t leave anything behind. After all, it should be second nature to want to preserve such a spectacular river valley in Northern Ireland and woodlands which are believed to be one of the largest semi-natural deciduous woodlands (in other words, shaped by nature and man) in the Sperrin Mountains. Pitches aren’t allocated here, so find your own spot. You might want to set up in the woodlands, where there aren’t any other humans, except maybe a few guests tracing the lush forest trails and local wildlife (which will usually see you first, so they take some tracking down). There are elevated areas up a long, private concrete road with views for miles too and riverside pitches (accessible by four-wheel drive only, weather permitting). Once you’re all settled in, you might want to make a beeline for the river. Salmon fishing is splendid here (just get prior permission from the site, please). Or perhaps the Sperrin Mountains (around 20 minutes’ drive away) will tempt you first – they’re a dream for hiking. When you arrive back, the site sells homemade ice cream as a refreshment or there’s a shop and restaurants in Plumbridge, five minutes’ drive away.

Liked: The pitch was perfectly located beside a river and it was great to escape to nature. The ice cream on-site was exceptional.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: This was my second stay at Sessile Oak and my friend and I had a great time. We found an excellent pitch down by the river bed where the trees gave us shelter from the wet August weather. We even got in a spot of fishing - unsuccessful but good craic. The kittens at the farm are a cute addition to Jonny's family which we nicknamed 'The Three Amigos' Enjoyed the ice cream at Dukes before the drive home - it's so good we took some supplies home. We highly recommend Sessile Oak for a wild camping experience on private land. Also lots to explore in the surrounding areas. Make sure to bring adequate clothing and footwear for the terrain.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Myself and 3 boys stayed for the night, the children had a great time wild camping. There was abit of a trek to the camping spot, however it was well worth the trek for the perfect spot besides the river. Dukes ice cream was a lovely treat, so good intact we went back for more. Jonny was a great host.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We travelled to the Sperrins for a birthday getaway with our two large, energetic dogs. Jonny was a fantastic host from start to finish, despite working hard on his farm. He welcomed us straight away and showed us the areas to pitch. The working farm is a welcoming place that is serene with the beautiful landscape that surrounds it. We pitched up near the river, where we spent the most peaceful two nights. Easy access to the river by following the path along the field. Hugo met his match with Storm, but was very friendly towards our hyper pup and scared, old-man pup. Fantastic ice-cream and fantastic hospitality, we will definitely be back!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely beautiful and tranquil wild camping spot, the owner and his family are very welcoming and helpful, we were made to feel very welcome from the second we arrived. The groups I was with all are seasoned wild campers, and we were all in agreement that it is a fantastic spot. I cannot praise Sessile Oak highly enough, it is an oasis of calm and tranquillity, if you like your camping to be wild and peaceful this is the spot. If you want peace and quiet to reflect and relax then this is the spot for wild camping. The home made Ice cream that the owners make is not to be missed, I fully expect to see it in Marks and Spencer's in the future - it is that good!

Disliked: Not a thing!

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: We really enjoyed our stay at Sessile Oak. We had a great pitch next to the river at the far end of the field. The river is excellent for salmon and trout fishing (with permission). Jonny was an excellent host and advised us on places to explore around the river and the surrounding area. A firepit is supplied as well as firewood for a few quid. The setting is tranquil with only the sounds of the river and birds. We would recommend Sessile Oak to anyone who wants to experience wild camping next to a river and on private land. The location also makes an excellent base to jump in the car and explore the surrounding area. There is so much to see including castles, tombs, stone circles, forests and much more. The delicious Dukes Ice Cream is a great way to round of your adventure.

Disliked: You can pitch your tent almost anywhere around the field and river. However walking from one end of the field to the other can be quite arduous as there is no trail or pathway through the tall wet grass. Please ensure to bring some deet spray for protection from the bugs and beasties!

From the manager: Thanks so much for your stay George, looking forward to welcoming you back later in the year. Just regarding your walking down the field in the long grass point, there is a hardcore laneway/track down the left of the field from top to bottom, you guys must have missed it. I will be sure to point it out next time. Those are some great photos. Thanks again for staying with us.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Everything. Even though there is no EHU it really felt like a truely authentic camping experience. The peace and quiet was amazing as were our friendly bovine neighbours. Nothing was too much trouble for our host Jonny. He got us a fire pit and logs and showed us where to park up. All that was left was to just chill and enjoy this remarkable place. Being part of a dairy farm, a lovely little shop selling their home made Dukes ice cream was a 10 minute stroll away, absolutely delicious. Highly recommend and will be back ASAP 😍

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful wild camping site. Great river for fishing. Johnny is a wonderful and friendly host. We are very inexperienced campers and he was very helpful and accommodating. Kids had a great time and made friends with the cows and the gorgeous collie dog. And Dukes ice cream really is the best we ever tasted. Kids are determined that we will be making the 4hr round trip just for the ice cream alone!

Local attractions

Here for the hikes? Then, make your way right over to Gortin Glen Lakes (five minutes’ drive) and Gortin Glen Forest Park (10 minutes). With mountain biking trails at the latter, those who like to shred up the trails will be in their element too. As for places that are suited to pint-sized punters, Glenpark Estate (10 minutes) has a nice little set-up going on. The gorgeous grounds have rare-breed animals and a soft play area. Sprinkle a little history in with that at the Ulster American Folk Park (20 minutes), an open-air museum all about Irish emigration. Moor Lough (20 minutes) is the place to go for wild swims in a glacial landscape – there are beaches dedicated to swimming around the lake, and trails galore. For the constellations? OM Dark Sky Park & Observatory (half an hour) has guided tours specialising in just that. Perhaps you might look to Londonderry (40 minutes) for extra entertainment? The walled city has everything from museums and historical sites like the 17th-century Derry’s Wall gates and St. Columb’s Cathedral to paddleboarding activities on the river Foyle.
