General

  • Countryside setting at the foot of Benbradagh Mountain
  • Spectacular views
  • Dogs and children very welcome

Off to explore Ireland's utterly gorge north coast? Settle mountainly down at Hillfoot Caravan Site and Camping near Derry's Dungiven.

The site is run by very friendly Mervyn and team (not forgetting famous campsite collie Ben) and is in a superly scenic countryside setting at the foot of Benbradagh Mountain: 'views to die for', 'brilliant', 'smashing' and 'stunning' are just a few of the compliments already heaped on the site, setting and staff by happy Hillfoot guests.

Mervyn and co take great care of the land where the camping pitches are and ask all guests to do the same so the landscape is protected. Waste disposal points, a chemical disposal point, fresh water and bins are all conveniently located.

Small folk are very welcome at Hillfoot and there's loads of room for them to run safely around; the team just asks that children are supervised/kept within sight at all times as there's often machinery and cars around the farmhouse. Dogs are most welcome too, but again please take care and keep them on leads at all times as the site is surrounded by fields full of sheep and cows. Two dogs are allowed per tourer or motorhome.

The Hillfoot amenities include two handsomely converted loo and shower facilities and a meeting area for small groups and parties: contact Mervyn when you arrive if you want to use this and he'll be happy to sort you out.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

AMAZING CAMPSITE!! This is a hidden gem. I stayed here mid May with my girlfriend for a night as part of our week long blitz through the North West of Ireland. We were trying to keep our budget low for the trip so decided to stay here for £8. The value-for-money was ludicrous! We actually just ended up paying a fiver as we didn't use any electricity. The owner (annoyingly can't remember his name) is lovely! He knows a crazy amount about the surrounding area and its history which was fascinating to find out about. We basically had a 40 minute history lesson on arrival which was epic and then another 20 minutes in the morning. The surroundings were stunning and couldn't have asked for a more scenic and piece of quiet place to stay. Before staying here we were a bit sceptical about its location as it wasn't on the coast but it was a great change of scenery! I can't recommend this place highly enough and for the price it is an absolute steal!!! The campsite itself was incredibly well kept with beautifully cut grass, lights mapping out the camp spots, clean bathrooms etc. I could keep on going but all-in-all GO AND STAY HERE :)

Brilliant peaceful little campsite which is extremely well looked after. Pitches are lovely and level and everyone has loads of space. We had a brilliant 2 night stay, the kids had loads of fun in the play park and we enjoyed Ben the dog's visits to our tent. We were all sorry to leave. Thank you for having us Mervyn.

This is a great campsite, very clean & tidy & well looked after by the owner Mervyn & to his credit Mervyn is a very nice friendly man who has great knowledge about the local area, aswel as the surrounding areas, he is very costumer focused, he's always at hand with plenty of helpful information, showing you around the whole site & telling you how everything works, even giving a hand to put up your tent, nothing ever seems too much trouble for him.
The views from the campsite are amazing, from looking up across the mountains watching the cows & sheep grazing to down across the valley just watching the world go bye, definitely on a clear day (which we had 4 out of the 5 days) you could see for miles in every road & direction.
The facilities were kept very clean & tidy, not to mention that there was afew added wee bonuses, two different communal areas which both had there own showers & toilet facilities, aswel as having a tv with free view box, radio, sofas, books, dinner table, chairs, hairdryer & one of the areas also has a fridge, freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer.
There is also a play area for the kids for any day you just want these relax around the campsite & take it easy, which will keep them entertained for afew hour & they'll still be within sight of your tent to make sure there ok.
Another added bonus was that you didn't have to check out first thing in the morning or even in the early afternoon, I was told just to take my time & enjoy my last day at the site.
All in all........ this is definitely a great family friendly campsite, with good sized level pitches, good facilities, views to die for, with its hidden extra bonuses, definitely great value for your money & a very nice, friendly & very costumer focused owner.

  • 119 Legavallon Road, Dungiven, Co. Londonderry, Northern Ireland, BT47 4QN
  • Timezone Europe/London BST (GMT+01:00)   GPS 54.9430°N 6.8966°W

Directions

When approaching Dungiven from the east turn left onto the B64 following the signposts to Garvagh, follow the road for approximately 1.5 miles. You will come to a crossroads then turn right at the next building on your right and we are signposted from there.

When approaching Dungiven from the west, drive through Dungiven, then at the top of the town turn left onto the B64 following the signposts to Garvagh. Follow the road for approximately 1.5 miles. You will come to a crossroads then turn right at the next building on your right and we are signposted from there.

When approaching from the north, whilst driving in a southerly direction on the B64, look for a large farm on your right-hand side and we are on the left.

Belfast has two airports, Belfast International and George Best Belfast City Airport, both are approximately one hour's drive from the campsite. The City of Derry Airport is to the north-west of the site, about a 20-minute drive away.

Local attractions

Explore town, country and coast from Hillfoot Caravan Site and Camping – you won't be too far from Northern Ireland's two main cities Derry and Belfast either.

Going coastwards – the Antrim coast is what most people visiting these parts come to see – the Causeway Coastal Route running from Belfast to Derry is within a short drive of the site and passes through the Causeway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty as well as many old villages and coastal towns such as Ballycastle. The holiday resort of Benone is less than half an hour's drive to the coast in the north and has miles of golden sands, part of which are dog-friendly.

Stop off at Ballycastle, home to the famous Ould Lammas Fair dating back to the seventeenth century and probably the biggest of its kind in Ireland. Go here if you're around in August to buy bags of dulse and yellowman, or take the ferry from the town at any time of year to the RSPB reserve of Rathlin Island six miles offshore.

Towns and cities are well within an hour's drive, such as Ballykelly on the road towards Derry and with the walking trails of nearby Walworth Wood; 'gateway to the glens' Ballymena and its museums and market 30 miles to the east; Antrim and its two castles; and Coleraine, within about half an hour of the site and recommended by the Hillfoot team for shopping and most of the major brand stores.

You'll also have to have a day (and night) in Derry 30 minutes away, city of old walls, the Nerve Centre arts building and many pubs and clubs, and in Belfast, N Ireland's capital and filled with plenty to see and do. Take one of the open-top bus tours for the best guided look at the city: the route runs from the city centre out to the government buildings of Stormont, along the Falls and Shankill roads and back into town via the university area.

Also recommended are Benbradagh (four miles to the south east) and Binevenagh (17 miles north), the two highest mountains in Northern Ireland; and Jessie's Cabin, at the base of Benbradagh and with stunning views: the countryside surrounding here is classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

And if you want to travel a little further, take the Foyle ferry about 20 minutes from Hillfoot which will take you over Lough Foyle and into Co Donegal in the Irish Republic.
