The beautiful Benbradagh Mountain

General

  • Countryside setting at the foot of Benbradagh Mountain
  • Spectacular views
  • Dogs and children very welcome

Off to explore Ireland's utterly gorge north coast? Settle mountainly down at Hillfoot Caravan Site and Camping near Derry's Dungiven.

The site is run by very friendly Mervyn and team (not forgetting famous campsite collie Ben) and is in a scenic countryside setting at the foot of Benbradagh Mountain: 'views to die for', 'brilliant', 'smashing' and 'stunning' are just a few of the compliments already heaped on the site, setting and staff by happy Hillfoot guests.

Mervyn and co take great care of the land where the pitches are and ask all guests to do the same so the landscape is protected. Waste disposal points, a chemical disposal point, fresh water and bins are all conveniently located.

Small folk are very welcome at Hillfoot and there's loads of room for them to run safely around; the team just asks that children are supervised/kept within sight at all times as there's often machinery and cars around the farmhouse. Dogs are most welcome too, but again please take care and keep them on leads at all times as the site is surrounded by fields full of sheep and cows. Two dogs are allowed per tourer or motorhome.

The Hillfoot amenities include two handsomely converted toilet and shower facilities and a meeting area for small groups and parties: contact Mervyn when you arrive if you want to use this latter and he'll be happy to sort you out.

Please note

The site only allows dogs up to 15kg.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Bicycles can be brought on site but are not permitted to be used on the site.

Superior campsite & view, interesting history & charming host.11/03/2020

Everything. View was Superior to any other campsite we have visited. The host, Mr. Scott, was more than kind and came out in the cold night when we arrived late to show us our pitch. He also made sure the bath house was warm for us, as it was only March 2 and bitterly cold/windy. Mr. Scott introduced us to his good old dog Ben the next day, and gave us some interesting history of the surrounding area; he also helped with route suggestions for us as we traveled south and local sites less travelled by tourists. Such kindness in a campsite host is rare and much appreciated. We hope to come back again. - the Millers, Tennessee, USA

To get there during the night it is pretty difficult, you need to select the right coordinates.

I would recommend to arrive during the day to avoid anytime lost while searching for the rigth crossing.

Everything, the owner could not be more helpful, facilities, toilets and showers spotless, Its not a big place its rural, but in every way, the owner makes up for it, I was in my campervan, but if your are camping, and wet in a damp tent, there is a traditional cottage, with light heat and facilities , where you can you warm up and have an chill out. When I was there ( Merve the owner(not sure if that is the correct spelling Irish to me Scottish) he could not be more friendlier, he gave me a lift into the local town Dungiven. Its not a big town as we say in Scotland, but I had a pint( if not several in all the local bars and found them all equally enjoyable people are friendly were ether you go.

    Disliked:

    Nothing, to do with campsite.
Taxis in a rural area are a bit hit and miss
Roads are busy in rural areas, and Locals tend to drive quicker than you might think on rural roads, so if you are walking down a rural road, make sure you have light reflective clothing and bicycle lights activated.

Local attractions

Going coastwards – the Antrim coast is what most people visiting these parts come to see – the Causeway Coastal Route running from Belfast to Derry is within a short drive of the site and passes through the Causeway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty as well as many old villages and coastal towns such as Ballycastle. The holiday resort of Benone is less than half an hour's drive to the coast in the north and has miles of golden sands, part of which are dog-friendly.

Towns and cities are well within an hour's drive, such as Ballykelly on the road towards Derry and with the walking trails of nearby Walworth Wood; 'gateway to the glens' Ballymena and its museums and market 30 miles to the east; Antrim and its two castles; and Coleraine, within about half an hour of the site and recommended by the Hillfoot team for shopping and most of the major brand stores.

And if you want to travel a little further, take the Foyle ferry about 20 minutes from Hillfoot which will take you over Lough Foyle and into Co Donegal in the Irish Republic.
