Feel like you’ve Erne’d a relaxing break? Want to cast off on a grand scale on a fishy Fermanagh holiday? You’ll be hooked if you cruise along to Drumhoney Holiday Park among the Fermanagh lakelands, near Lower Lough Erne and with two fishing lakes on site stuffed to the gills with rainbow trout (fly and lure fishing on one lake; lure fishing only on the other). Small fry will probably want the family to bypass the fishing lakes and zoom straight to Drumhoney’s own animal farm to lollygag at the llamas, rabbits, ponies, pigs and more; like the paths around the lakes, the farm is easily accessible to guests with fully surfaced tarmac walkways all around. There’s a play area to let the tiddlers loose on too, a sweet shop and a well-stocked indoor games room with pool tables, table tennis, air hockey and games machines. And if they’re still full of beans, go-karts and tractors can be hired from the site shop… Pitches in this countryside setting park come with a panoramic view of the Fermanagh hills and mountains: choose from a tent, tourer or motorhome electric pitch or bed down in a family camping hut, sleeping up to six. The immaculate amenities at Drumhoney are tip-top, including two heated shower and toilet blocks with disabled access, a washing-up area, kitchen facilities and a launderette; there’s also wifi access for those who want to stay on the grid.

Local attractions

Drumhoney is tucked in the middle of Fermanagh’s main tourist areas, with a whopping amount of activities within easy reach, from shopping to golf to more angling. The fishing village of Kesh is a few miles away on the Kesh River, and has the award-winning Lough Erne Hotel for tasty treats, golf and taking it easy at the Thai spa. The popular fishing spot Muckross Quay and entry point to Lough Erne is just outside the village for ambitious anglers: trout of over 19lbs and pike of almost 40lb have been landed here, so pack your camera along with your rod. The village of Irvinestown is also nearby – catch the famous Lady of the Lake Festival if you’re visiting in July, get a bite to eat at Mahon’s Hotel or the many local restaurants, mosey along to the market or have a canter at the Necarne Castle Equestrian School just outside the village. Irvinestown’s also within reach of the Castle Archdale Country Park on the shores of Lower Lough Erne, with lakeside and woodland walking and cycling paths, gardens, a red deer enclosure, butterfly garden and boating marina. Pettigo, on the Co Fermanagh border, has over fifty fishing lakes and is a gateway to exploring the gorgeous sights of Donegal. For a day trip, the county town of Enniskillen is a short distance away: alongside some smart shops and restaurants, there’s the Lakeland Forum sports centre for energetic types, the Erneside Shopping Centre for wallet lightening, and the Ardhowen Theatre for dramatic and comedic souls. Those of a literary bent can ponder on the importance of being earnest or wait for Godot in the town: both Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett were educated at Enniskillen’s Portora Royal School.
