  • Peaceful family-run site on the Antrim coast with sea views
  • An hour and a half's walk from Giant's Causeway and Dunluce Castle
  • Playground, games room and camp kitchen on site
The folk at UNESCO may have bestowed their coveted World Heritage Site status on just one place in Northern Ireland, but boy is it a corker. It is, of course, the famed Giant’s Causeway, up on the northern Antrim coast a couple of miles from Bushmills. A day trip here is a very fine thing, but a vastly preferable thing is to coast along for a few days at Causeway Coast Wigwams, two miles from the main attraction. Settle in here to see the spectacular stones at your own pace, following in the footsteps of the giants themselves to amble over there in an hour and a half at whatever hour you choose (and there’s free entry for those on foot, too… so perhaps you’ll stroll over more than once to see it in different lights?). And there’s more beyond that – the site’s also well placed for wanders to Dunluce Castle and a dram or few at the Bushmills Distillery. Golfers may possibly have heard of the local course, one Royal Portrush Golf Club; it’s a 15-minute drive away if you’d like to watch your idols in action or have a crack at the course yourself. Back at base, sea-view barbecues or campfires are a fab idea on a fine day; if it's a tad soggy (as is occasionally the case in this part of the world), confine your cooking to the well-equipped camp kitchen. With a similar nod to the fickle weather the owners have also set up both an open-air playground and an indoor games room (plus free wifi to check the forecast).

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Great location. Peaceful site. Amazing showers! Everything we needed all week in about a 10 mile radius of the site. Thoroughly recommend Giants Causeway at dusk.

Disliked: Wish there were more walking paths from the site. Didn't fancy walking along roads, but as everything was so close we weren't in the car for long.

Liked: Lovely site near all the beaches and north coast attractions. Modern toilet block and games room were very clean. Showers were hot and powerful, couldn’t have asked for anything better. Wi-Fi across the site kept the kids happy at night time.

Liked: Really lovely place to stay! We did camping here and although the weather was rubbish it didn't ruin our stay. The staff are all lovely and so helpful and the facilities are some of the best we have seen when we've been at campsites. We will 100% be returning next year!

Local attractions

A decent pair of walking shoes is a useful item for the packing list – they’ll come in handy for your walk to the Giant's Causeway, and for scampering over the rocks when you get there. It’s a 45-minute walk to the visitor centre and a further half-hour to the rocks (there’s parking and a shuttle bus too if legs aren’t up to such endeavours). Dunluce Castle, four miles away, is another fab spot for a walk, but for close-up sea views you might like to pick your way across the Carrick-A-Rede rope bridge (15 minutes’ drive), which takes you right out over the waves. Need a tot of whiskey to calm your nerves before/after? The Old Bushmills Distillery is a five-minute drive from site (or a 45-minute stagger). In the market for some beach action? Portrush, 15 minutes away, is the place for sandy stretches and the fine funfair rides at Barry’s Amusements. Bowling and a waterpark are also in town for keeping small sorts amused on damp days.
