  • Secluded 34-acre farm within half-hour’s drive of Bristol and Bath
  • A 10-minute woodland walk to a pub serving food; bus stop nearby
  • Barbecues and firepits allowed; foraging workshops available for a fee
Choose your own pitch at the 34-acre Dagger Wood Campsite. Among lots of leafy greenery, this park is on a family farm in Clutton and just half an hour’s drive from both Bristol and Bath. Eye it all up from the seating areas and picnic benches or while settling down by one of the firepits. Barbecues are permitted at this dog-friendly park as well, so get the blaze going and plonk yourself down for alfresco eats. If cooking is a no-no when you’re on a hol, wander 10 minutes through woodland to a pub serving meals. After other activities besides ambling? The team here also run outdoor pursuits such as wild food foraging workshops and fitness bootcamps (additional fees apply). If you fancy a ride on a tractor, then your wish is the owners’ command. The amenities at this site may be limited (two cold open-air showers, four composting toilets and fresh running water), but the friendly father and son team will pull out all the stops to make yours a comfortable stay. As the site is large, with various levels of uneven ground and hills, they can also lend a hand if mobility is an issue. If you’re leaving the car at home, the nearest bus stop is a short walk down the road and public transport runs to Bristol’s centre and Glastonbury. There's a car park for vehicles, as parking next to your pitch is not permitted.

Bell tent (adults only)

Liked Really nice and peaceful place. Allowed campfires and disposable BBQs. Around 20-30 minute drive to both bath and Bristol which is perfect.

Disliked The showers are quite open to everyone so put me off in having one or had to go at very specific times when no one is around

Liked Great place for a few nights camping! 30 mins drive from Warleigh Weir so can go for a nice swim and then come back to the peaceful camp. Thank you! We will definitely be back.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked Beautiful campsite at a great price. I went for one night with 3 children (15,8 and 6). We all had a great time and enjoyed the break from the hustle and bustle of life. Great location, although the entrance was a little scary to drive down in the dark, and bigger sign posting would be helpful. Facilities were minimal, but just as advertised and clean. The atmosphere was lovely, we didn't utilise the optional extra activities (clay pigeon shooting, foraging or personal training) but still had a lovely time. We hope to return soon. Perfect for a no-thrills cheap and cheerful night away.

Disliked The only thing i disliked (and this is being really nit-picky) was that the site was a bit noisier than expected when the frequent aeroplanes flew above, but obviously, there's not anything that can be done about that. There was also more traffic noise than I thought there would be, but again, there's nothing that can be done.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked The setting, the private pitches, the walk to the Hunters Rest, friendly campsite manager Henry, and in my opinion, the best compost toilets I've ever been on (no smell at all!) :)

Disliked The sound of the A37 was quite present on pitch 4, which is a lovely forest pitch

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Henry is running Dagger wood campsite, I love it there, peaceful most of the time.
I wish I had come across this site a few years ago, I would have been staying there more often. As I'm classed as homeless, I don’t know what I'm going to do after he closes the site sometime in September.
Thanks to Henry.

Disliked There's only one thing I don't like about the site, that is it's closing sometime in September until around the beginning of next year, February/March time would be my guess.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked Lovely back to basics campsite with minimal facilities (might not suit everyone!) but where you can get your own space away from others. Lots of trees and blackberries. Walk to the pub (Hunters Inn) was nice (the pub and the walk)

Disliked Theres no escaping the noise from the road! Such a shame... You can kinda tune it out, until a motorbike zooms past...

Local attractions

Check out Chew Valley Lake (10 minutes’ drive) if you’re into birdwatching and fishing, or attempt to get a glimpse of some of the UK’s native four-legged animals at the Avon Valley Adventure & Wildlife Park (20 minutes). For city slicking once you’ve ticked off walks and cycle rides through the Combe Down Tunnel (25 minutes), make a beeline for Bristol and see the cathedral and zoo, making sure to stop off at the Brunel-designed Clifton Suspension Bridge and SS Great Britain ship as well (25 minutes). Bath’s another unmissable urban destination – head to this spot for the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey and Pulteney Bridge (half an hour), then wander around Wells, a tiny city home to a cracking cathedral (30 minutes) and the gateway to the Wookey Hole Caves. If you’re into all things bohemian, drop by Glastonbury too and browse the offbeat boutiques before taking a walk up to Glastonbury Tor for fab views over the countryside (45 minutes).
