Martha's Down: Pitching field

General

  • Family- and dog-friendly rural site two minutes' drive from the A303
  • Within half an hour's drive of Stonehenge, Longleat and Salisbury
  • Two village pubs and village shop 15 minutes' walk away

Fancy a bit of wild-style camping but without a wild and complicated journey to get there? Make for Martha's Down, in a cracking Wiltshire countryside spot a couple of minutes’ drive from the A303, just south of Chicklade.

Such a handy location makes this a top spot for cross-country stopovers, but those that choose to stick around for a little longer should be richly rewarded with fine views (as it’s in the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and places to go for day trips (what with Salisbury, Shaftesbury, Stonehenge, Stourhead and Longleat all being within a half-hour drive…)

The vibe here at Martha’s* place is ‘wild-style’ rather than completely wild camping – that means all the relaxed atmosphere and peace of a rural site but with the added comfort of hot showers and ample toilets (there’s also a chemical waste disposal point if you’re in possession of your own toilet facilities).

This is a place that’s keenly family friendly, so it allows well-behaved dogs and has a strict quiet time from 10pm to 8am that all guests are asked to keep to. Family gatherings round a barbecue are most welcome too: there’s a village shop 15 minutes’ walk away for picking up the bits, although you may just choose to stick around in the village to eat at one of the two pubs instead.

(*Martha being, of course, the owners’ favourite sheep that they hand-reared after she was orphaned as a lamb. See if you can spot her now among the small flock of ewes on site…)

Please note

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Field with a lovely view, sunrise was AMAZING. Quiet location, walking distance to Hinton village, we ate at the Lamb which was good, torch essential for return journey! Loos we’re modern and clean and well lit, plenty of hot water, washing up sink behind. Showers looked good but we didn’t use them on this occasion.

Martha's Down is a little gem of a place to get away from it all. It's a good sized field which apart from the electric hook up pitches, is free for you to make camp anywhere. Rob the owner appears a few times during the day to ensure that everything is spic and span and to hand out fire pits and lots of logs for those who have ordered them (this can be done directly through him if you change your mind once on site). There is a 10 minute walk down to the village with two great pubs to enjoy yourself in - they are both very welcoming. Walking back up the hill (it's not too steep) is only slower if you've filled yourselves up on the excellent food and beers that they've offered you!!
The toilets and showers are good, functional and clean and better than some other sites that we've stayed in.
Plenty of room to fly kites, have a game of footy with the kids, and well behaved dogs are tolerated. There are some nice walks around there but be prepared as whilst not steep, there is little flat ground to walk through which gives you the bonus of being able to take in some great views of the beautiful surrounding Wiltshire countryside.
We've been to a lot of sites and this is in our top 3 - it has everything we like in a site and are a little reluctant to tell everyone else in case it becomes too popular!!!

Peaceful location, spotless toilets on arrival. Unobtrusive but friendly owner. Flat pitches. Toilets/ Shower facilities don’t appear to be a permanent fixture but rather the deluxe eventing trailer type. There was plentiful hot water and water pressure was good. Facilities only appeared to be cleaned once daily but this might have been due low occupancy following the bank holiday. Locked entry to camping field which is given on arrival.

The pitch was flat and we could chose our spot. …20/09/2022

The pitch was flat and we could chose our spot. The site wasn't busy and lots of space and quiet. The owner delivered more than enough wood for our firepit which we enjoyed sitting and playing games around. We took our own grill for the firepit to cook on as the hired firepit didn't have one, but I knew that as had read previous reviews. The showers and toilets were clean with washing up facilities behind the block. Water taps placed around the field saved a walk to the sink. It had everything we wanted for our stay, which was just the basics and to be left alone.
We didn't take a dog, but it was a doggie friendly site as very spaced apart pitches and lovely to see them enjoying themselves with their families coming back from long walks.

We visited a different part of the country later in the year and everyone wanted to rebook this one at Martha's Down next time. Truly relaxing.

We enjoyed a lovely bank holiday stay. Plenty of places to pitch around the large field. Hot showers and clean toilets plus additional porta-loos located around the field. Quiet site with beautiful views and a short walk to the pretty village of Hindon with 2 pubs. Perfect site for relaxing while they kids played.

Local attractions

Whether you’re taking the dog for a wander or sloping off for a well-earned pint in the pub you’ve come to the right place for country walks – there are oodles of paths to pick from in the local area. If you'd rather pedal, have a chat with the folk at local outfit Cranks and Planks for e-bike hire.

For a rather grander backdrop to your rambles, aim for the gorgeous gardens at Stourhead (15 minutes’ drive) or the lakeside Old Wardour Castle (20 minutes) – this latter is in a ruined state but still intact enough for youngsters to play at being knights.

Surely no visit to this area would be complete without stopping by at Stonehenge (20 minutes) to see the ancient circle up close, and taking a stroll around Salisbury (half an hour) to explore its market and gaze up at the cathedral’s 123-metre spire.

A full day out should certainly be planned at Longleat (20 minutes) as well – alongside the drive-through safaris are friendly farm animals, a mini railway to ride on, a castle-themed playground and one of the biggest hedge mazes in the world (plus a very smart house with formal gardens and art collection, if that’s more your thing…)

Must see

  • Stourhead House and Garden (8.4 miles)
  • Longleat (8.7 miles)
  • Wilton House (11.8 miles)

  • Philipps House and Dinton Park (6.1 miles)
