Martha's Down: Plenty of space for little monkeys

General

  • Family- and dog-friendly rural site two minutes' drive from the A303
  • Within half an hour's drive of Stonehenge, Longleat and Salisbury
  • Two village pubs and village shop 15 minutes' walk away

Fancy a bit of wild-style camping but without a wild and complicated journey to get there? Make for Martha's Down, in a cracking Wiltshire countryside spot a couple of minutes’ drive from the A303, just south of Chicklade.

Such a handy location makes this a top spot for cross-country stopovers, but those that choose to stick around for a little longer should be richly rewarded with fine views (as it’s in the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and places to go for day trips (what with Salisbury, Shaftesbury, Stonehenge, Stourhead and Longleat all being within a half-hour drive…)

The vibe here at Martha’s* place is ‘wild-style’ rather than completely wild camping – that means all the relaxed atmosphere and peace of a rural site but with the added comfort of hot showers and ample toilets (there’s also a chemical waste disposal point if you’re in possession of your own toilet facilities).

This is a place that’s keenly family-friendly, so it allows well-behaved dogs and has a strict quiet time from 10pm to 8am that all guests are asked to keep to. Family gatherings round a barbecue are most welcome too: there’s a village shop 15 minutes’ walk away for picking up the bits, although you may just choose to stick around in the village to eat at one of the two pubs instead.

(*Martha being, of course, the owners’ favourite sheep that they hand-reared after she was orphaned as a lamb. See if you can spot her now among the small flock of ewes on site…)

Please note

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

This is a simple campsite in a beautiful part of the world. Facilities were basic but clean and good. The best thing was having the entire campsite to ourselves the whole weekend, no one else being stupid enough to camp in October. The owner was kind, laid back and accommodating. The dog and the children ran about with complete freedom for two days. Bliss!

Nice big site, plenty of space and with good views. Toilets & showers (the posh mobile type) were very clean.

I'd happily stay here again. I'd also recommend Bird & Carter in Fonthill (a short bike ride away) for coffee & cake, and the Grosvenor Arms in Hindon (easily walkable) for an evening meal / drink.

This camping site is superb! If you like your 'back to basics' camping this is for you. It's a large open field with hedgerows and lovely views of the surrounding fields.
It has a shower block (4 individual showers - these are locked until the owner knows you have arrived) and a toilet block, which I would describe as 'posh portaloos'. There are of very high spec, very clean and tidy. The owner visits daily to clean and check. During our stay, there was only us (2 adults and a child) and another family of 4. As there were only 2 families, we had a designated shower block which was lovely as it meant we knew it would be available! As the showers are locked, the owner will contact you to ask when you need them open by, they then remain unlocked during your stay.
The land is well maintained with drinking water points around the edge of the site. There are also a couple of electric pitches if you prefer that. These are to the rear of the site.
There are washing up facilities to the rear of the shower/toilet block.
It was peaceful with loads of space to run around and play. I used the perimeter of the site for a daily walk.
The owners are very nice and are very helpful. The site is padlocked and the owner will give you the code on your arrival if you phone them. In our case, he phoned us to make sure we had received the email and that all was OK. He then texted us the code.
There is however no wifi, but the signal strength was good throughout our stay.
The campsite is close by to the following:
Stonehenge. This is only about 30 minutes away but due to the volume of traffic, it can take anything up to an hour. Stonehenge is aware of this so if you do arrive late, they can usually accommodate you.

Longleat Safari Park. Again, this is only about 25 minutes away. We wanted to visit Longleat and it was due to this reason why we chose Martha's Down in the first place.

Westbury White Horse. As we had a morning visit to Stonehenge we went on to the Westbury White Horse, again, only about 25 minutes away.

Salisbury Cathedral and Salisbury Museum. These were about 30-35 minutes away. Definitely worth a visit. They are both chargeable entries, but we thought reasonable and in line with other attractions of the same sort. The car park for these are within the grounds and is £7 all day.

There are a few supermarkets around the area, the closest being a Tesco Extra about 20 minutes away.

The owner advised us that Bournemouth is only about an hour away if you like a beach day during your holiday.

Overall, we had a very lovely time in Wiltshire, the campsite was above our expectations and we really enjoyed our stay. If we were to visit Wiltshire again, this would definitely be our first choice to stay again.

The view was amazing, the field was peaceful and there was plenty of space for two going children to run around. The owner of the campsite was very helpful and made sure we had what we needed. The fire pit was great for toasting marshmallows. The showers and toilets were clean.

Local attractions

Whether you’re taking the dog for a wander or sloping off for a well-earned pint in the pub you’ve come to the right place for country walks – there are oodles of paths to pick from in the local area. If you'd rather pedal, have a chat with the folk at local outfit Cranks and Planks for e-bike hire.

For a rather grander backdrop to your rambles, aim for the gorgeous gardens at Stourhead (15 minutes’ drive) or the lakeside Old Wardour Castle (20 minutes) – this latter is in a ruined state but still intact enough for toddlers to play at being knights.

Surely no visit to this area would be complete without stopping by at Stonehenge (20 minutes) to see the ancient circle up close, and taking a stroll around Salisbury (half an hour) to explore its market and gaze up at the cathedral’s 123-metre spire.

A full day out should certainly be planned at Longleat (20 minutes) as well – alongside the drive-through safaris are friendly farm animals, a mini railway to ride on, a castle-themed playground and one of the biggest hedge mazes in the world (plus a very smart house with formal gardens and art collection, if that’s more your thing…)

Must see

  • Stourhead House and Garden (8.4 miles)
  • Longleat (8.7 miles)
  • Wilton House (11.8 miles)

  • Philipps House and Dinton Park (6.1 miles)
