  • Quiet family campsite a mile from Chapmanslade
  • Frome, Longleat and Bath city centre within 25 minutes' drive
  • Basic but well-equipped site on the grounds of a small working farm
Located a mile outside the village of Chapmanslade and close to the intersection of the A36 and the A3098, Thoulstone Park is a quiet campsite set on a small working farm next to a spacious stretch of parkland. With all of Wiltshire and Somerset on your doorstep, what are you waiting for? Thoulstone Park's simple facilities include access to well-maintained toilets and showers. While open fires aren't allowed here, you can hire an on-site firepit for toasty outdoor get-togethers (subject to availability). Well-behaved dogs are welcome too, and it's easy to make your four-legged friends feel included given how much green space is nearby for walks. If you have any questions about the local area or any requests that could help make your stay more special, the friendly owner is more than happy to help. Handily, the park is also very close to Chapmanslade, where there are amenities including a pub and a garden centre. The larger town of Westbury – home to a railway station, restaurants and supermarkets – is three miles away to the north-west (with Frome and Warminster roughly the same distance too), while the attractive Georgian city of Bath is 25 minutes away by road.

What customers say

This is a welcoming, peaceful, and spacious campsite with friendly, helpful owners. Reviewers highlight the excellent toilet and shower facilities, convenience for local attractions like Longleat, and the enjoyable presence of free-range chickens. While some mention occasional road noise and a desire for more tidiness at the entrance, the site is generally praised for its quiet atmosphere, good value, and ample space for children and pets.

Liked Owner was flexible with use of fire pit

Disliked I first arrived on my own and the owner was very chatty. I thought he was just a bit of a character at first but then he started asking me how old I was, telling me I looked younger, asking whether I was married, do I have children etc. He kept coming over to watch me put up my tent, not offering to help, just watching me. Later he told me he prefers younger women than women of his age and he made a joke about putting a hedgehog in my tent at night.

He said hello to my dog nicely and then made out like she was sniffing his crotch when she clearly wasn’t.
When my friends arrived, he came over again and stood very close to me while I was bent over using the air pump. I felt really uncomfortable, like he was staring down my top. I moved round but he kept staring.

There is a mannequin when you come into the entrance. The owner has dressed the mannequin in lingerie and handcuffs and told me that someone had shot its face off with a shotgun.

With all this combined, we just felt quite uncomfortable around him and if I had been on my own I would not have stayed the night. Luckily I had my dog with me and my friends in the tent next door.
We stayed civil to him and left early the next morning.

In terms of the site itself, as others have said it is very basic for the money we paid. We didn’t use the showers due to feeling uncomfortable so can’t comment on those.
There is a main road nearby which was noisy the whole night through - take ear plugs!
I’d also recommend strong insect repellent as there were lots of midges where we were.

We will not be going back and I personally would not recommend young women stay there alone. He may have not done anything further than comments and looking but it didn’t feel professional or comfortable either way.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Quiet site

Disliked Isn't a proper campsite as to say, more of a back garden of a small holding. The price was high for the quality of the campsite. The toilets are basic but functional. No other facility's on site, on arrival wasn't sure if I was in the right place, no signs or directions as to say, upon entry the smashed greenhouses and stuff around is an eyesore. I felt the owner was abit passive agressive but could of been a misunderstanding from me as other reviews say that he was friendly.

Local attractions

Thoulstone Park is close to lots of local points of interest. Bratton Camp (10 minutes' drive), an English Heritage-managed hillfort built over 2,000 years ago, is just down the road, and next to it you can admire one of the most spectacular hillside White Horses in the South West. Frome (10 minutes), over the border in Somerset, has lots of similarly attractive features, with independent shops, cosy pubs and a town history museum full of local curios. Family-friendly big-hitters nearby include Longleat Safari Park (15 minutes), Wiltshire's answer to the wilds of the Serengeti. After visiting the animals, take the time to explore the historic halls of Longleat House, and make sure to try and navigate your way through the park's devilishly difficult hedge maze too. More days out are on offer in the historic village of Nunney (15 minutes), home to a moated 14th-century castle, while for underground adventures you could set off on a cave journey by boat at Wookey Hole (40 minutes), one of the most iconic caves in Britain. If that sounds like a recipe for claustrophobia, perhaps you’d rather opt for the wide open spaces of the Mendip Hills (30 minutes).
