  • Dog-friendly glamping site in a paddock in the Wiltshire countryside
  • A 10-minute drive from Longleat and half an hour from Bath
  • Three pubs within walking distance; hot tub and firepit provided
Whether it’s little and big wanders in the surrounding Wiltshire countryside or lazier days lounging in hammocks on site, Hidden Wood is all about getting into that relaxation mode. This small family-run glamping site is the pride and joy of the owners, and has just the right touch of luxury to make your stay as splendid as possible… This site's surroundings, which consist of private woodland and bluebells, certainly add to the sense of relaxation. The same can be said for the views of the Wiltshire countryside – although it’s also quite likely you’ll be spending some time discovering the landscapes for yourself on walks in the local area. The paddock at Hidden Wood is fully enclosed with sheep-proof fencing, so dogs are welcome to join you on your holiday. With a fully-equipped kitchen, bathroom, TV and heating, it’s rather cosy in the glamping units for you all. The outside space is just as comfortable – each unit has the sole use of a woodburning hot tub, firepit, barbecue and hammocks (time for an evening of stargazing perhaps?) When you’re ready to branch out into the surrounding area, there are three pubs within walking distance of the site and a supermarket five minutes’ drive away for those evenings where you’d rather take on the chef role. Longleat and its safari park and hedge maze are just 10 minutes’ drive away from the site, so you’ll always be close to the lions and monkeys. As for some city sightseeing activities, Bath is half an hour’s drive away.

Local attractions

If it’s the city you’re heading for first of all, Bath (half an hour’s drive) is certainly one place for a packed itinerary. Stop at the Jane Austen Centre if you’re a literary fan, snap a picture of Royal Crescent and then check out the Roman Baths’ pump room and thermal waters. One landmark closer to the site is Bratton Camp & White Horse (15 minutes). Walks are splendid there, with the Iron Age hillfort and white hillside figure acting as landmarks on your route. Some other lovely landscapes for all that hiking and biking business can be tracked down in the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (45 minutes). The Mendip Activity Centre (55 minutes) will give you the chance to try out a new pursuit at the same time – perhaps skiing, abseiling, caving, tobogganing or paddleboarding. You may want somewhere a little closer by if you don't fancy travelling too far. If so, the National Trust’s Cley Hill is 35 minutes’ walk or five minutes’ drive from the site. There, the chalklands and woodlands make for a rather peaceful walk.

The Mainstay camping pod (hot tub)

Liked: Everything about this place! Everything had been well thought out with the location and design. The paddock was totally secure so my dog was able to run around, explore and even safely say hello to the neighbouring cabin. Which by the way is situated a good distance away and there's even a screen between you to ensure complete privacy. There's a comfy double bed, sofa, dining table, fully equipt kitchen which was perfect! Even a coffee pod machine. The shower is surprisingly big and the hot tub was a delight. We were surrounded by bluebells in the forest, deer, pheasants and wild rabbits - peaceful bliss. This was my first trip away alone (with my dog) and I felt totally safe. Cannot wait to go back!

The Hideaway cabin (hot tub)

Liked: Beautiful decor and excellent quality accommodation. Comfortable bed. High water pressure/ quality bathroom, real ceramic/glass crockery and glasses. Wildlife all around and birdsong. Beautiful walks accessible from the site.

Disliked: “Take your recycling home”… Bad TV signal, bad internet signal -not important if you’re looking to relax in isolation, however, it’s good to be aware of those things if you’re potentially stuck indoors in bad weather. Sheep grazing right up to the fence around the pitch, not ideal if you have interested dogs with you and you want to relax. Dogs can’t really be left off-lead outside because of this.

From the manager: Hi thanks for your feedback. We ask guests to take home recycling home sometimes there can be a lot, sometimes up to 30 bottles. And that's fine guests are free to do as they choose but we think you should be responsible for that large amount of recycling. But we wouldn't mind guests leaving a small amount. The tv can be retuned if reception is bad as it is in a middle of a field it will sometimes play up. The same with 3-4G which does work fine but its the price you pay for the remote location we don't offer wi-fi as noted in listing people seem to get wit their mobiles. The paddock is fully secured for dogs and guests love to watch the sheep grazing. The sheep wont hang around if spooked by a dog, moving to another part of the field ok as they are rams and not lambing ewes. We think this is part of the charm of the site but we can't cater for every dog type. There will be lots of wildlife, most love the space and freedom the paddock gives them.

Lovely place, nice and quiet, has all facilities needed, will go again
