General

  • Farm centre with bison, elk and many other animals
  • Farm walk, lake, duck hide, chipmunks, raccoons and more
  • Playground, kids' farmyard and shop serving tea and light meals

Bush Farm is a farm centre with bison, elk and many other animals to see, tucked away in the woods at the southern end of the small village of West Knoyle, two miles from the A303.

The car park is sheltered among the trees and visitors go through the gallery to collect their map for the farm walk. In the gallery are pictures of American wildlife, Native American artefacts of all kinds and 'buffalo' robes to keep you warm in winter.

The farm walk is for about a mile as a circular tour round the fields where visitors can see herds of bison, (between 90-100) as well as elk, all out in the meadows. Closer to the farm yard are lakes and 30 acres of old oak woods, with picnic and play areas and home to poultry, owls, rare breed sheep and pigs, chipmunks, prairies dogs, rheas, raccoons and guanacos. Hidden in the bushes is a duck hide to watch wildlife on the bottom lake.

By the gallery lawn picnic area is a playground and a children’s farmyard. Teas and light meals are served from the shop, where you can also buy bison and elk meat.

Next best thing to wild camping, facilities are very basic and that's just fine, the owners are really lovely. Don't expect to be pampered as you are on your own I feel that is what makes it special. The boys really enjoyed it as once you have bought your farm ticket you are free to roam day or night.

    Disliked:

Nothing the owners can do just a friendly warning ⚠ watch out for ticks, the boys and I had our fair share.

Bush farm is primarily a proper working family farm (so ponds, agricultural machinery, muck etc. present!) which raises bison and elk with a small campsite. A beautiful woodland campsite area gives you the experience of wild camping and there are brick fire pits for use on every pitch with wood available for purchase. There are basic toilet and shower facilities, a shower is £2.00 but the water is hot and you can take as long as you want. There was always hot water for washing up.
The owners and staff are very pleasant and helpful people and there is a farm walk to see other animals for which there is a charge. There are donkeys, pygmy goats, guanaco, rhea and others. There is small children's play area and sandpit near the camping area and a shop sells Native American themed and other gifts and frozen meat products, steaks, burgers, sausages etc. from the farm. A small cafe serves bison burgers which are delicious. My kids and I absolutely loved it and will definitely go back.

We stayed on pitch 6 and it was perfect for us, we have a very large tent with awning and there was plenty of space. The pitches are all spread out so you really get the feel of wild camping in a forest. Each pitch has a fire pit and a picnic table. We brought our own tripod grill and cooked over the fire for the entire time we were there.
Our children (12 and 9) absolutely loved staying here, running off around the trees, foraging wood for the fire. There's a little swing park that they used too.
Toilets were great, very clean and warm. Plenty of hot water and as there's only a small amount of camping there's no queuing. Shower is £2 to open the door but then plenty of hot water when in. Again, was very clean.
The farm itself is lovely. Owners were incredibly nice and we loved just living amongst their animals, there's eagle owls, turkeys, quail, pigs, ducks and dogs before your actually get through the gate for the farm walk (half price for campers and a must!)
Site is only 25mins from stonehenge which we took advantage of whilst there. It's free for national trust or English heritage members.
We loved staying at Bush Farm and are already looking at coming back again for longer.

    Disliked:

If there's anything I could find to dislike I would just suggest making sure long socks are worn - it's a natural setting and that means there are nettles!

The farm walk was fun and it was great meeting the animals!
The tent pitches were beautiful and spacious.
The toilets were fairly clean (except when people were showering and made the floor muddy!)
We had our own picnic table and fire pit which was an added bonus.

    Disliked:

large tent pitch near us meant there were cars parking very near our pitch which was a bit of a disturbance

Loved the camping pitches, each set in their own private bit of woodland with a picnic bench and a campfire! We loved having a BBQ followed by sitting by the fire we built looking up at the stars! A perfect first camping trip!
