  • Relaxed rural campsite on a working mixed farm
  • Bradford-on-Avon 15 minutes' drive; Bath half an hour
  • Family-friendly farm on the edge of a Wiltshire village; dogs allowed
Take up a plot at Yellowtail Camping for a relaxed and welcoming stay. This campsite is in the grounds of a working mixed farm in the Wiltshire countryside and it’s a top base for exploring local towns like Bradford-on-Avon or Frome, as well as UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Stonehenge and the Georgian city of Bath. Plus, the place itself is in a convenient location on the edge of the village of Hilperton near Trowbridge. With a nature pond, a designated picnic and barbecue area and key facilities like toilets, showers and chemical disposal points, Yellowtail Camping has the kind of functional amenities that make holidaying here that little bit more pleasant. Dogs are allowed here throughout the camping season too, but please make sure they're on a lead at all times and well-behaved around other guests and their pets. New Barn Farm, where the campsite is located, is about 15 minutes' walk from the Kennet and Avon Canal, where there's lots of scope for waterside walks, bike rides and trips to the pubs that are dotted along the towpath. The site is also within a mile's walking or cycling distance from a café and a coffee roaster, while Trowbridge town centre's supermarkets and railway station can be accessed in a five-minute drive or less.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: I really want to give this place 1 star so it doesn’t get too busy! 🤣 It’s great. The owner came to meet us when we got there and gave us the gate code and explained everything we needed to know. Lovely little set up with everything you need. Facilities are basic but really well done, clean and well thought out. It’s very secure. We had the whole camping field to ourselves other than one tent, it was fab. Location is good. Easy to get to in a big vehicle and all the locals were friendly. It’s close to the canal for nice walks and there’s a shop a walkable distance. We got a taxi back from Trowbridge train station one night and it was only £9. Plenty of bus stops and there’s one 10 mins walk away and easy to get to Bath & Bristol on the train. We drove to Castle Combe in 35 mins too.

Disliked: The only downsides were not having hot water in the wash up area, but I already knew that. And the water pressure in the showers isn’t great, it would have taken me ages to wash my hair but not a problem if you’re just having a shower or you have short hair. To be fair it’s a rural campsite on a farm and that’s what I loved about it so those things are more of a heads up than a dislike.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Quiet site, only few hardstanding & electric. Very secure, has key pad locked gate. Clean bathrooms & well maintained site. I've stayed here before.

Disliked: Could do with hot water to do dishes, not only cold. I washed mine by my pitch instead.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Lovely peaceful campsite, clean toilet and shower blocks, and helpful site manager.

Disliked: We had dogs with us and the campsite is small and no where to be able to walk the dogs first thing without leaving the site, we paid £90 for the dogs and there were no facilities.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback, We would like to add some context as the feed back as it stands lacks a little clarity. With relation to the stated cost of £90. This equates to 6 nights for 5 dogs @ £3 per dog, per night. Having conducted market research at the beginning of the season, we feel this is a competitive rate when compared with other campsites located in Wiltshire. We have a spacious campsite with regularly cut grass that allows dogs to be walked and makes it easier for owners to be responsible in relation to waste, encouraging the enjoyment of all those making use of the campsite’s facilities. As the campsite is located on a working farm, we do however request, that dogs are kept on the lead while on the campsite. We also operate this policy to help ensure the enjoyment of other campers with children or others who may or may not have an aversion to dogs, airing on the side of caution. We have found over the years these policies provide a happy medium between all those who visit the campsite and those responsible for managing and maintaining it. In relation to facilities close to the site that are specific for dogs there is the following: Four acres dog field - Secure Dog Field in TrowbridgeDog Parks Near Me We welcome any suggestions visitors may have if they feel reasonable improvements could be made that would consider the aforementioned considerations.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Quiet peaceful site . Toilet/ shower in same cubicle plus two separate toilets good ,but when site busy maybe not enough as site is quite large . Apart from a couple of tents we were the only ones there . Pitch was good , level, and large. Lovely walk along the canal.

Disliked: Rather overpriced at £40 per night. Most expensive site we’ve stayed on. No local shop.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. With regards pricing we would like to clarify that £40 was the price for 2 adults, and that prior to deciding this summer seasons prices, research was conducted to ensure we are competitive with other campsites in Wiltshire. In relation to no local shop, there is a shop located at the garage on the roundabout junction between Hill Street and Marsh road. There is also a café in the village garden centre that offers a range of snacks and drinks, with particularly good cakes. If a more filling meal is required the Lion and Fiddle Public House is located a short walk from the campsite, that offers great Nepalese dishes. Lastly the campsite operates in association with a local organisation that provides local guide maps of Trowbridge, supplying information of other local attractions and amenities. Copies of this map are available on the campsite.

Good, safe, secure and friendly.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: I recommend this site. It was booked to use as a convenient base whilst I was on one of my metal detecting weekends. I recommend it to anyone who wants a well run campsite with readily accessible, clean facilities. Secure entry and exit meant I was able to pitch a tent to hold all my food and and other essentials whilst using my small camper to sleep and for shooting off detecting for 12 hours or so. The facilities were just right, the luxury of having a hot shower after a day in the fields was great and was a real bonus. The site was easy to find and the reception once on site was good, frienly and comprehensive. I will definitely stay here again when in the area.

Disliked: Nothing.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Very safe, especially compared to other camping sites. I was actually given the address by a policeman (not the kind who is in the wrong job). The people who run the place are lovely and I wouldn’t hesitate to tell them if I encountered a serious problem during my stay. The toilets/showers are clean and the water for the shower is hot, the grass is cut regularly and although the gate can be a bit temperamental (i.e. you have to key in the code more than once to get access) I have never been unable to get in or out. There are beautiful sunsets and as well as birds (buzzards, owls, woodpeckers) you can watch RAF planes. The site is very pedestrian/cyclist friendly: it is within walking distance of Trowbridge (half an hour) and the towpath (also about half an hour) and it’s also close to the bus stop (direct bus to Bath around 9am on weekday mornings, regular bus to Chippenham/Melksham or to Frome Monday to Saturday).

Disliked: You sometimes get bothered by men, but it's rare. I did have a guy who rubbed his crotch while looking at me one evening, then came to the door of my tent twice during the night. Fortunately I woke up both times and he went away. I guess he harboured Sleeping Beauty/Snow White fantasies. Good thing that I do not drink alcohol or take drugs (whether prescription or not) and that it’s a bit difficult to spike the food or the drink of another camper. He left the following morning. I also get the occasional guy walking back and forth (with their dog, often) and staring, or parking right next to my tent when there’s plenty of room, but it's still much, much safer than in a houseshare, and so much quieter (no blaring TV or hifi!).

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Great bathroom and showers.

Disliked: I would like to be able to bring my own fireplace instead of mandatory renting it out there

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Sonia, We are glad you liked the bathroom and shower facilities. Just to clarify, renting of firepits is not mandatory, however in the past, certain types of firepits have resulted in damage to the camping pitches. When this occurs the grass needs to be reseeded to repair the damage. This could lead, if this occurred regularly, to a situation where the appearance of the maintained campsite may be degraded to the point campers would now longer find the environment appealing. For this reason, we have set a number of standards that firepits are required to meet before there use is permitted on the campsite as follows: 1 - The firepit should have a separate heat shield plate that is located below the firepit to protect the grass below. 2 - The firepit needs to be on legs sufficiently high to ensure damage to the grass will not occur. Campers who would like to use firepits that meet these standards are welcome to do so. Alternatively if firepits are found to not meet the standards, we do offer the ability to hire ones that do. We hope this clarifies the policies regrading the use of firepits.

Local attractions

Scenic are many of the places around here. First off, there’s Bradford-on-Avon (15 minutes' drive) on the river Avon, where it’s easy to get fully acquainted with the water by canoeing, kayaking or taking a boat tour. There are historical heritage sites too, and it’s not the only place known for that because Bath (half an hour) has Roman baths, the pretty Pulteney Bridge and Bath Abbey. More of those historical go-tos, Stonehenge (40 minutes) has surely got to make your list for its iconic stone circle. Closer by, the 14th-century remains of Farleigh Hungerford Castle (15 minutes) and the peaceful Iford Manor Gardens (20 minutes) are some other tributes to old times. Then, when you fancy throwing some wildlife into the mix, Longleat Safari Park (30 minutes) has more than its fair share. Other cool natural spots include the limestone caverns at Wookey Hole (an hour), but for that buzz of the town, Frome (half an hour) has a historic centre and Wells (an hour) is packed with events, eateries and museums.
