Yellowtail Camping: On site

General

  • Relaxed rural campsite on a working mixed farm
  • Bradford-on-Avon 15 minutes' drive; Bath half an hour
  • Family-friendly farm on the edge of a Wiltshire village; dogs allowed

Take up a plot at Yellowtail Camping for a relaxed and welcoming stay. This campsite is in the grounds of a working mixed farm in the Wiltshire countryside and it’s a top base for exploring local towns like Bradford-on-Avon or Frome, as well as UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Stonehenge and the Georgian city of Bath. Plus, the place itself is in a convenient location on the edge of the village of Hilperton near Trowbridge.

With a nature pond, a designated picnic and barbecue area and key facilities like toilets, showers and chemical disposal points, Yellowtail Camping has the kind of functional amenities that make holidaying here that little bit more pleasant. Dogs are allowed here throughout the camping season too, but please make sure they're on a lead at all times and well-behaved around other guests and their pets.

New Barn Farm, where the campsite is located, is about 15 minutes' walk from the Kennet and Avon Canal, where there's lots of scope for waterside walks, bike rides and trips to the pubs that are dotted along the towpath. The site is also within a mile's walking or cycling distance from a café and a coffee roaster, while Trowbridge town centre's supermarkets and railway station can be accessed in a five-minute drive or less.

Please note

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

If reception is closed on arrival: please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

Bookings must not be for more than 25 consecutive nights.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

We stayed there for 1 night, and found the site exceptional, laid out well, very spacious, has a newly installed toilet and shower block.
Grass or hard standing. Being early in the season, the grass pitches were on a well drained flat field site. It’s rural, love it!
A lot of hard work has gone into this site, and is a real credit to the Craddock family, a real pleasure to meet. Thank you.

The site is in a lovely location in a quiet village on a working farm.
The site is very basic although there is a new toilet block with a single shower which was very clean, however only one of the toilets was unlocked.

    Disliked:

Only one of the toilets (the one with the shower) was unlocked and there were no wash up facilities open.
Our stay was unfortunately spoilt by a group of men who arrived on Friday and proceeded to drink and shout until 0230, hence we left a day earlier than planned. We did let the owners know by email as they are not on site (they live locally) but there was no suggestion of a refund.
Perhaps some signs to encourage consideration for other residents would help.
For such a basic site it is expensive.

From the manager...

HI Alison.

whilst we understand that everyone will take a different experience from their stay at Yellowtail camping, we think it was a little unreasonable of you to make the comments that you have made in your review.

you state the site "is nothing to like" & a "small flat waste ground" we feel this is an unjust statement due to the extensive efforts' we have gone to in the 2 years we took to create Yellowtail, and the natural environment around it with hedgerows, wild areas, the family copse, the museum shed, the natural pond, with fish, wild flowers & duck house, and the spacious Oversize Pitches both Electric Hook up & Non electric Grass camping. all of which is surrounded by our Arable farm land on all sides.

you stated the toilet blocks were locked with no warning - We wish to bring your attention to Both our Website & Pitch up's listing for our site where it is clearly stated that toilets & showers are not available between October & March. the units you saw and were locked, were new investments we have made to allow us to offer such facilities during the winter as well as summer seasons. they were locked because they were not fit for use yet and not connected to any services, therefore not safe for anyone to use, and this was explained on the phone call you made at 9 pm on your arrival to the site.

as your hosts for the 1 night you stayed, we are sorry that you have had such an unpleasant experience of our campsite, however very disappointed that you felt the need to make such an in-factual and unpleasant review of our establishment.

we wish you happy travels

This is one of the best camping sites I've stayed at so far.
It is very quiet, even though it is only a half hour walk from Trowbridge town center, and 10-15 minutes walk from the bus stops (for the X34 from Chippenham to Frome, or the 49 from Swindon to Trowbridge). The other guests are friendly but nosy, some of them seem to be seasoned campers, I admired how quick they are at setting up/taking down their tents.
The toilets and showers blocks are not available during the winter, however I've stayed there during the summer when they were available and they were quite clean (depending on who had used them before you!), well lit, and there was hot water.
There are several taps for drinking water dotted around the site and there's an 'intelligent' gate with sensors (so you don't get squashed if you are a bit slow walking or driving in after keying in the code). The drive goes all the way to the end of the camp site so there's no risk of your car or camping van getting stuck in a rut.
The owners are friendly but not nosy, and I've had a lovely time watching them gather the sheep and move them from one paddock to another, with the help of Border Collies.
There are plenty of walks around, you can spot or hear woodpeckers, buzzards, kestrels and owls, and there's also a military airfield not far away so you often get to see military planes and helicopters practising during the daytime.

Local attractions

Scenic are many of the places around here. First off, there’s Bradford-on-Avon (15 minutes' drive) on the river Avon, where it’s easy to get fully acquainted with the water by canoeing, kayaking or taking a boat tour. There are historical heritage sites too, and it’s not the only place known for that because Bath (half an hour) has Roman baths, the pretty Pulteney Bridge and Bath Abbey.

More of those historical go-tos, Stonehenge (40 minutes) has surely got to make your list for its iconic stone circle. Closer by, the 14th-century remains of Farleigh Hungerford Castle (15 minutes) and the peaceful Iford Manor Gardens (20 minutes) are some other tributes to old times.

Then, when you fancy throwing some wildlife into the mix, Longleat Safari Park (30 minutes) has more than its fair share. Other cool natural spots include the limestone caverns at Wookey Hole (an hour), but for that buzz of the town, Frome (half an hour) has a historic centre and Wells (an hour) is packed with events, eateries and museums.

Must see

  • Lacock Abbey, Grounds and Cloisters (6.0 miles)
  • American Museum in Britain (6.2 miles)
