  • Pop-up Wiltshire campsite with views up to a working windmill
  • Stonehenge and Avebury both within half an hour's drive
  • Easy access from the A338; gastropub five minutes' walk away
A campsite in the North Wessex Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is always going to be one that’s got lovely views – but Wilton Windmill Camping has something else to throw into the mix. As the name suggests, this Wiltshire pop-up site is next to a windmill – the only working windmill in the south-west of England, in fact, sitting on top of a hill where it can be seen from all pitches on site. You might be able to wander up there for a closer look, although the building’s opening hours are limited. There’s plenty more to see and do nearby, anyway – including walks in a gorgeous forest that was once Henry VIII’s hunting ground, wildlife spotting at Wilton Water and the chance to see the world’s oldest working beam engines. Longleat, Stonehenge, Bath and Legoland are among the other attractions you can fit in while you’re here if you don’t mind a bit of a longer journey. Speaking of journeys, getting in and out should be fairly straightforward here, as the site is only about a mile away from the A338 for easy connections from the M4. Simple facilities on site include shared toilets and showers, a washing-up sink, a wifi connection and a communal firepit for those campfire evenings. Pitches are nicely spacious, and there’s enough room to play games of rounders, frisbee and the like too. You’ll be allowed to bring barbecues along (please use the blocks provided for freestanding barbecues to avoid damaging the grass) – but you just might fancy the five-minute walk to the local gastropub for dinner instead?

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Small quiet site. Close to a lovely pub and nice walks.

Disliked: We didn't dislike anything but it would be useful to have some clothes hooks or a bench in the shower room so that you don't need to put clothes etc on the floor. Also, it would be good (and more hygienic) if hand soap was provided in the toilet block!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Surroundings, hospitality of farmer who checked that we had everything we needed, good shower and toilet blocks. Car park next to camping field so need to bring cars onto camping area, feels safer when cars aren't coming in and out at night.

Disliked: Would be good to put a sign for campsite by the farm and the right turn after the farm.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Clean new toilet block, only a couple people camping, friendly people working on the farm, nice pub 5 minute walk, some animals for son to look at, space to play some games.

Disliked: Would be nice to be able to drive up to the pitch or at least have some wheel barrows or somthing to lug the stuff from the car in one go.
