  • Well-kept, quiet Wiltshire farm site 10 minutes’ drive from Malmesbury
  • Westonbirt, The National Arboretum and Highgrove 20 minutes’ drive
  • Café with views over the fields; play barn for an additional fee
If you’re looking for somewhere to take the kids for a few days of country life, you should be heading to Down on the Farm, on the edge of the Cotswolds and 10 minutes’ drive from Malmesbury in North Wiltshire. This peaceful pop-up site is set on a beef farm with lots of curious cows to meet and great, and, for an additional fee, kids can access the huge play barn to play farm-themed games and ride mini tractors about the place. And for adults? Well, there’s a popular café with views over the farm fields, a modern facilities block with family shower rooms, and a camping field sheltered by mature trees. You can also set off on rural walks from the pitches, which are dog-friendly so Fido can join in the holiday fun too.  There are lots of options for family days out, whether it’s swimming at Cotswold Water Park (15 minutes’ drive) or exploring the standing stones at Avebury (35 minutes). And if you’d rather just stick around and chill on site, you can look forward to regular colourful sunsets and nights cosied up around the firepit.

Electric optional hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked Lovely warm welcome, the cafe is a nice touch. We all had a yummy lunch. The play barn was fab. We had our 8 year old nephew with us but the play barn was a little young for him. We did have a football and there were some goal posts down by the water. Lots of space to play about. He absolutely loved the cows and goats.

Nice to have facilities on site. Lovely hot showers. There is one single toilet and 2 shower cubicles which have toilets, but shoes can’t be worn in those. I can see how if the campsite was busy, there might be a little queue. There were 3 other pitches in use, so no bother for us.

Such a peaceful nights sleep.

Liked Scenery

Disliked Our stay at Down on the Farm Pitch was unfortunately disappointing overall. While the scenery was undeniably beautiful and one of the few highlights of the trip, several issues really let the experience down.

The café food was overpriced for what was offered, and didn’t feel good value for money. We had also seen a previous review mentioning that the showers were only lukewarm, and sadly this still hasn’t been resolved — they were not properly hot during our stay.

One of the most frustrating parts of our visit was returning after a day out to find that our pitch had been taken by someone else. There was no warning or communication about this at all. When we raised it with management, we were told, “well it’s not your pitch,” which was quite frustrating considering we had paid for it. That response felt dismissive and unhelpful.

We had also paid for hardstanding but were instead placed on grass, which was wet and muddy following Storm Dave. This made the stay far less comfortable than expected.

Management, in general, did not handle issues well and seemed out of their depth. Better communication and a more proactive approach would have made a big difference.

While the setting itself is lovely, the overall experience didn’t meet expectations, and unfortunately we wouldn’t choose to stay here again.

From the manager: We're sorry to hear you felt your stay wasn't a good one.
Others have reported showers were very warm, if we had known this wasn't your experience we would have seen what we could do.
With regards to your pitch, when you arrived you were shown the hardstanding pitch, however you chose to pitch on a grass pitch instead and not where we had allocated you, this you did for the two nights, therefore when you came back for your third night we presumed you would stay where you had on the other nights and is why someone else had taken what we had originally allocated to you as you had chosen a different pitch to go on. We did come out and speak to you when you got back to address.any potential issue.
With regards to the prices in the cafe we are very sorry you feel it is over priced as most say we are cheap.
As we say, sorry you didn't enjoy your visit.

Liked Such a lovely location with a short walk to a lovely pub close by! Facilities are clean and lovely cafe on site. The cows and goats are a plus 🥰

Disliked Unfortunately the hot water in the showers weren’t working when we were there, but didn’t make a fuss as we weren’t too bothered - I’m sure the team would have sorted that out if asked!

Liked Friendly staff. Nice surroundings.

Disliked No hot water in showers. No place to dispose of toilet cassette waste. No place to dispose of grey water. Washing up sink out in the open exposed to elements.

From the manager: We are very sorry to hear that your visit wasn't to your liking and didn't score higher, others on the same day gave very positive reviews and stopped extra nights as a result of their stay.

We do not advertise having the ability to get rid of your toilet waste, and therefore shouldn't be something you were expecting to be able to do as this is not a facility we are yet able to offer.

We do not advertise having Wifi, however the cafe and lots of the campsite has very good coverage.

When you raised an issue about the shower, we looked and were able to get it working, providing a hot shower and others were able to as well, so not sure why you weren't able to.

The washing up area is something that is being developed.

As we say,we are sorry that you feel other areas didn't warrant any higher score, others on the same day gave glowing reports.

Very warm welcome, thank you Bethan…

Local attractions

If the kids are with you, chances are the lakeside beach at Cotswold Water Park (15 minutes’ drive) will be your first stop; there you can go kayaking, swimming and dinghy sailing. Active types can also play a round on the local golf course (10 minutes), and you can exercise any dogs on the waterside or woodland walks at Cleveland Lakes Nature Reserve (15 minutes). There are more leafy strolls – this time among rare trees – at Westonbirt, The National Arboretum (20 minutes), where you can take the kids to follow the Gruffalo Trail or run around on the tree-top walkway. You can tour the Royal gardens at Highgrove Gardens (20 minutes), and the gardeners among you might also like to see the manicured grounds at Bowood House and Gardens (35 minutes), while your offspring head for the aerial walkways and ziplines. Introduce some culture into your holiday with a visit to the Roman remains and Georgian-era architecture in Cirencester (25 minutes), or discover the three rings of neolithic standing stones at Avebury (35 minutes). If the latter piques your interest, Stonehenge and its engaging visitor centre are but an hour and 10 minutes’ drive away.
