  • Back-to-basics meadow campsite on a farm near Devizes in Wiltshire
  • A 25-minute drive to Stonehenge and Pewsey Vale; 45 to Salisbury
  • Dog-friendly and off-grid wild camping; shops a 10-minute drive
You couldn’t get much more back to the basics of “proper” wild camping than at End Farm, near Devizes in Wiltshire. There may be no airs and graces here – and few amenities to speak of either – but what you do get is spacious grass pitches in a tree-shaded meadow with only the sounds of nature surrounding you. Set on a working farm, the camping field is bordered by a woodland that you (and your well-behaved canine companions) can explore, and you can try your hand at fishing for crayfish in the farm’s stream. Non-drinking water is available at the site, along with a rubbish point and chemical loo disposal, but as the field is firmly off-grid, remember to bring torches with you for wandering around after dark. Barbecues are permitted (you’ll need to bring everything with you) and you can pick up basic supplies in the quiet country village of Market Lavington (10 minutes’ drive) or do larger shops in old-world Devizes (15 minutes).

Local attractions

Rural this spot may be, but it’s also surprisingly easy to access some big hitters on your bucket list from here. The world-famous standing stones at Stonehenge (25 minutes’ drive) have a smart visitor centre, and the sprawling stone circles at Avebury (half an hour) are open to walk around at will. Close by is lesser-known prehistoric Silbury Hill (25 minutes), while just across the road you can walk right in to West Kennet Long Barrow. Old Sarum Castle, the spectacular cathedral, farmers’ markets and indie shops of Salisbury (45 minutes) are well worth a day of your attention. Devizes (15 minutes) sits on the Kennet and Avon Canal, chiefly known for its flight of 29 locks going up Caen Hill (10 minutes) – a wonder of early 19th-century engineering. You can see plenty on two legs too; Pewsey Vale (25 minutes) offers panoramic hikes over chalk downs, with several of Wiltshire’s signature chalk horses sculpted out of hillsides. Luckily for you, there are lots of cute little villages round and about, where you can find welcoming pubs offering a pint of Wiltshire beer and a decent meal after all your healthy exertions.
