  • Peaceful adults-only Wiltshire caravan site near Chippenham
  • Half an hour’s drive to Bath, 10 minutes to Lacock and five to the M4
  • Security barrier and dog-exercise field; pubs five minutes’ drive
Neatly manicured grounds and lots of greenery dividing the pitches into bays are just a taster of what's in store at adults-only Plough Lane Caravan Site, near Chippenham in Wiltshire. Thanks to its proximity to the M4 (five minutes’ drive), it’s also thoroughly easy to access (no reversing down narrow lanes for tractors here) as well as being close to the southern Cotswolds and gorgeous historic Bath. The site is secured with a barrier and all pitches have electric hook-ups, water and waste water disposal points. Carefully maintained facilities include a heated shower block with hot water, spacious cubicles and hair dryers, plus a launderette with an iron and dryer. Brought the dogs on holiday too? Let them have an off-lead runaround in the designated exercise field. Looking for inspiration for days out? Have a nose through the books in the information area, which also has books and DVDs to keep you entertained on any rainy days. Although it's on the edge of open countryside, the site still offers lots of local amenities: you can walk to stops on bus routes to Chippenham and the Cotswolds town of Malmesbury within five minutes, and if you like the sound of a pint, there are a couple of pubs within a five-minute drive or a 25-minute walk of the site. Going down the self-catering route? Pick up supplies from the supermarket on the outskirts of Chippenham (five minutes’ drive).

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Pitches were a good size, level and well spaced. Facilities were clean and well maintained. Easy access from motorway. No issues with electric, water and drainage.

Disliked: Would have liked some lighting to show way to toilet block at night. WiFi was intermittent and TV coverage wasn't great but didn't spoil our holiday.

Liked: Quiet site, very clean facilities, lovely walks around the local area with the dogs - nice to be able to be on a quiet campsite but still have pavements to walk around the local area! Field to let dogs off lead on site too. Lovely coffee shop within walking distance.

Disliked: Nothing. We were very happy here and cannot fault anything at all

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Nice space between pitches also hedges that devided the area's. Easy to find site. There was shower gel, shampoo and lotion in the shower room which was a nice touch.

Disliked: Pitches could be improved by being weeded. Ladies showers the button for the water didn't stay in for long only a few seconds so had to hold hand on them so you could wash off shower gel.

Liked: A clean and peaceful site with good sized and level pitches. We received a warm welcome with nothing too much trouble. The toilets and showers were well kept with the addition of shampoo and shower gel being provided.

Disliked: It's a shame you can hear the traffic from the main road, but that is a small niggle when you have such an easily accessible site.

Liked: A good location for catching a bus to various places, although not surprisingly the nearby road can at times be noisy. Pitches reasonably flat although some vehicles noted to be ramped up slightly. Hard standing pitches well spaced with fairly generous grassed areas between. Wi-fi was good, however we found the TV signal poor at times.

Disliked: Toilet block although fairly well cleaned, in need of some attention as a little tired, with various facilities within being out of order throughout our one week stay. Also security barrier inoperative. However these issues would not deter us from staying again, assuming the shortfalls are addressed over the low season.

Local attractions

Fancy a nose around the southern Cotswolds? Lacock (10 minutes’ drive) is a rather lovely place to start, with lots of Georgian cottages and a riverside abbey where scenes from Harry Potter were filmed. Heading north is Castle Combe (15 minutes), often called the prettiest village in England), with a medieval market cross and a sprinkling of cosy tea rooms. Go way back in time to marvel at prehistoric man’s ingenuity with a visit to the stone circles and informative visitor centre at Stonehenge (50 minutes), or get up close to standing stones at Avebury. On the way between these two landmarks, stop off to admire 19th-century engineering skills at Caen Hill Locks (both half an hour) near Devizes, where a series of 29 locks rise up a steep hillside. Another local must-see Longleat (40 minute), with its popular safari tours to spot lions, tigers and giraffes, but if your interests are more city-based, head straight to Bath (half an hour) for its indie shopping and regal architecture, or nip up the M4 to Designer Outlet Swindon (20 minutes) for some serious bargain hunting.
