Ever thought you could feel right at home living on a smart country estate? Well, here’s your chance to give it a try. You won’t be staying in the medieval buildings themselves, but at Stowford Manor Farm you’ll set up in the gorgeous grounds of a 15th-century manor house in the Wiltshire countryside, about three miles from Bradford-on-Avon. And this small-scale site has another excellent feature – it’s right on the banks of the River Frome, with access to the water for fishing, paddling, swimming, paddleboarding and launching small boats. In fact, it’s such a great spot for wild swimming that the Farleigh and District Swimming Club has its base about half a mile downstream – and if you fancy joining them for a dip, you can join up for half price. The campsite itself is a fairly traditional setup, with simple facilities in the form of toilets, showers (extra charge applies) and hot-water washing-up sinks. Dogs and kids are welcome, and you’ll be allowed to set up barbecues and firepits as long as they’re kept off the ground. Logs, barbecue boxes and other goodies can be added to your booking to make life easy (and tasty…) As you might expect from a farm site, you’ll share the space with some animals (get ready to meet some pigs, donkeys and cows while you're here) as well as arable crops. What you may not have expected is that the site also has a lovely little tea room that’s open in the afternoons for cream teas and ice creams, and it also serves up wood-fired pizzas in the evenings (Friday and Saturday nights from May to August, plus other evenings in peak season).

Liked We stayed in the main field, lovely and flat with a nice view of the beautiful manor house. Facilities were clean. The showers and washing up are in a gorgeous old stable building.
We had an issue with loud music and George rectified this for us.

Liked Great stay at the campsite, facilities were adequate and I stayed when there was only a few people on the main pitch. It was lovely to stay alongside the stream, very quiet location with plenty of space and room on the pitches. I personally couldn’t connect to WiFi but it wasn’t a big deal for me as I had ample data on my mobile.

Liked clean and peaceful campsite in beautiful farm surroundings. Lovely facilities and the river is just gorgeous.
Fantastic service as we were offered a nicer pitch for just me and my 4 year old to enjoy, such a thoughtful and kind host. Cakes are delicious in their tea room too! Will definitely be booking again.

Disliked The site is to close to the main road, which doesn’t seem to stop even through the night.
Toilet block need updating.
The site itself was loud with music going on till very late this was advertised as a quiet site.

Liked The river was perfect for the kids, so many fish. Wonderful to see the animals as well. We will definitely be back. Staff so helpful and cream teas amazing. Pitches spacious. Easy to find and lots locally to do

Disliked Toilets bit dated and road was loud but easy enough to ignore given all the positives. Wifi not working and not hot water for washing up either was a pain but the positives certainly outweigh negatives

Disliked A lot of road noise in Tagglemead. Our family in tent left early after poor sleep.

Paying to use showers. Not had this before.

No rubbish or foul water dump near this field. .

If you’d like to explore your immediate surroundings, you need only find one of the footpaths that runs from the site to places like Farleigh Hungerford Castle, Iford Manor Gardens or Westwood Manor. There are riverside walks galore around here too – either along the River Avon or by the Kennet and Avon Canal. A couple of the Avon’s top attractions are in fact its urban spaces – both Bradford-on-Avon (five minutes' drive) and Bath (20 minutes) are well worth visiting for their historic buildings. You may also like to take a trip to Frome (15 minutes). If you’ve brought the kids along on holiday, a trip to the safari park at Longleat (20 minutes) may well be on the cards; if that's a bit too big, consider booking a wolf experience at The Little Zoo (15 minutes) instead.
