  • Peaceful, no-frills site in the Mendip Hills near Winscombe
  • Family-run and dog-friendly; 20 minutes' drive from Weston-super-Mare
  • Easy access to the Strawberry Line and other trails; dogs welcome
If you don’t mind getting back to basics in exchange for a privileged location at the foot of Somerset’s Mendip Hills, then Cherry Max might just be the place for you. And the warm welcome you get at this family-run site (five minutes’ drive from Winscombe) also goes a long way towards making up for the limited frills (a shared toilet, drinking water points and recycling bins). But… look around you after setting up on the (level) camping field, and take in spectacular views of the Mendip Hills National Landscape – that’s why people travel, isn’t it? There are some excellent trails to explore in those hills – from easy short routes to moderate circular walks (up to about nine miles in length), taking in places like Ebbor Gorge (half an hour’s drive) or Chew Valley Lake (35 minutes), the latter a birdwatching hotspot. Then there’s the Strawberry Line about a mile away, a former railway track that's been turned into a nine-mile walking and cycling route; and the Mendip Way, a long-distance trail that links Weston-super-Mare (20 minutes' drive) to Frome (an hour) via Cheddar and Wells. Your canine buddy is welcome to join you on any of these walks, but you might have to put them on a lead in grazing fields and in areas where there might be ground nesting birds (woodland, grasslands and lake shores). Winscombe has all the shops you might need to gather the ingredients for a barbecue (including a butcher’s, a bakery and a small supermarket), plus several cafés, restaurants and pubs.

What customers say

This is a friendly, peaceful, and well-maintained campsite set in a lovely location, ideal for exploring the Mendip Hills and local attractions. Visitors consistently praise the welcoming and helpful owners. Facilities are described as basic but clean and adequate, with water and electric hook-up available. While most guests enjoyed the quiet atmosphere and scenic views, one reviewer noted noise from a generator. The lack of a shower block is mentioned, with the owners hopeful of future development. Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked A friendly welcome, without hovering, and a lovely site, really quiet and easy.

For such simple facilities they were clean and well stocked with loo roll etc.

highlight was the clear night sky with meteors. put phones away after dark and you'll be treated, then a hot air balloon early morning

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked The basic nature of the site, proper back to bare basic, no night lighting so views of a clear sky are exceptional.

Owners are incredibly friendly and helpful, stayed here twice now and would and do recommend this site to everyone.

If you are swinging through and need an overnight halt I urge you to stay here, child friendly so perfect for a family overnight trip or a family week away.

Perfect place for those who enjoy nature, so many walks through the Mendip Hills with picturesque views of the local landscape.

Disliked None.

Liked Great little sight, really quiet and the owners were so friendly - so we’re all the other campers. My little one loved the ducks on sight coming out to say hello! 20ish minutes from Weston super mare,
We also visited burnham on sea and Brean whilst we were here. Close enough to everything as long as your driving!

Disliked Could possibly do with more than one toilet, but being a small sight it was manageable! We really have nothing to complain about

From the manager: Thanks Aimee-Leigh!
