Thorn Farm: Off-grid hut in a secluded valley

General

  • Off-grid site with a shepherd’s hut in a secluded Exmoor valley
  • A 15-minute drive from Dunster beach and South West Coast Path
  • Eco-friendly unit with woodburning stove, firepit and kitchen

Fancy having the freedom to roam in the woods and fields of a peaceful area with barely another soul in sight? Then throw yourself into a break at Thron Farm – this park is in a secluded Somerset valley on Exmoor that isn’t accessible by car.

Mountain bikes could easily be ridden down to the shepherd’s hut and it’s reachable in five minutes on foot too (but as it's quite steep it may take a little longer to get back up…). Staff will transport you there with your bags from the main house and will collect you on the day you leave as well.

Now on to that hut: the accommodation is clean, comfortably furnished and has a small kitchen area, plus there’s a woodburning stove for heating or cooking, a firepit for whipping up food alfresco (extra fuel can be collected from the woods) and a gas ring for those who don't want to bother with building a blaze.

If you’re up for an off-grid getaway, this space three miles from Dunster really is top-notch. There’s no electricity, so light is provided by oil lamps, gas or candles, and spring water is available at a nearby standpipe. There are also composting toilet facilities and an outdoor shower with hot water. The hut is stocked with the basics for making tea and coffee, and it's possible to buy eggs and milk too.

Just make sure to bring wellies or boots, a head torch and a rucksack along with you and keep in mind that there’s no phone signal at the hut, but limited reception is available if you walk back up to the house. The stroll to and from the accommodation requires a basic level of fitness.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

There is no phone signal at the hut but limited reception is available if you walk back up to the house.

The walk to and from the hut requires a basic level of fitness.

First time of hutting and it was amazing. The welcoming was great despite arriving in the evening. The facilities were immaculate and everything worked well. The location was stunning. All the little details were thought of such as some games, condiments for good. It was a fantastic experience and something we would consider doing again.

They had thought of every little detail. Joy and her husband are lovely people and there was everything you could possibly need, it really was a fantastic stay.
It was a birthday treat weekend and we arrived to an amazing afternoon tea, with home-made scones, finger sandwiches and box of chocolates. The kettle was filled and ready to go. It all tasted amazing and was a great way to arrive.
The kitchen was stocked with everything you could need. Mugs, glasses, plates, bowls, kettles, gas burners and even a brita filter. There is a decent sized fridge and even a hot shower. Perfect place for a quiet and peaceful retreat.
The hut was comfy and cosy. There was clean, fresh bedding and towels. It was a very comfortable stay. Outside, there is plenty of storage and lots of wood for the log burner/camp fire.
The little valley, where the hut is located, is beautifully secluded. There are many walks and places to explore. It was a brilliant location for our dog, she had space, freedom and lots to enjoy. She loved every second of our stay too.
We will definitely be going back (booked a weekend in June) and would highly recommend this place to anyone who enjoys getting back to nature but with a few home comforts. We like to think of it as wild glamping :-) No signal (which we loved) but the dab radio worked.
It would suit solo travellers, couples, dog owners, families (plenty of space for kids tents) and walkers.

Local attractions

An off-grid stay doesn’t mean you’ll have no access to entertainment. The nearest pub is two miles along a rough footpath (possible by mountain bike if you have commando-like tendencies). There's another pub in the opposite direction, along the same footpath about three miles away, and if you walk or ride your bike there then staff can bring you back if asked in advance.

Being rural, the surrounds are excellent for walkers, mountain bikers and birdwatchers, plus outdoor activities like canoeing, fishing and pony trekking are available. Craving the beach? It’s a 15-minute drive to the sands of Dunster and the stellar South West Coast Path.

If you'd like to include the odd attraction among your countryside explores, aim for Minehead (15 minutes' drive) to board a heritage train on the West Somerset Railway, soak up some history at Cleeve Abbey (20 minutes) or admire the floral displays at Greencombe Gardens (25 minutes).

Must see

  • Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (19.6 miles)
  • St Fagans: National History Museum (24.8 miles)
  • The National Trust Killerton House & Gardens (24.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Dunster Working Watermill (2.5 miles)
