General

  • Off-grid site in a secluded Exmoor valley
  • Shepherd's hut lit by oil lamp and candle
  • Woodburning stove and firepit

Thron Farm is in a secluded valley on Exmoor with freedom to roam in woods and fields on the farm. The site is situated in a valley which is not accessible by car; however, mountain bikes could easily be ridden down.

Guests are recommended to either walk down or, as is more often the case, staff can take you down with your bags. It is only a five-minute walk down but being quite steep, it takes a little longer to get back up. Staff will transport you and your bags down to the hut (approximately a ten-minute walk from the house) and will bring you back up on the day of departure.

The shepherd's hut is clean, comfortably furnished, and has small kitchen facilities. It has a woodburning stove for heating or cooking purposes. There is also a firepit for cooking with fuel (extra fuel can be collected from the woods) and a gas ring for those who don't want to bother with campfires.

There is no electricity and light is by oil lamp, gas, or candle. Spring water is available at a nearby standpipe and there are also composting toilet facilities and an outdoor shower with hot water. The hut is stocked with the basics for making tea and coffee; however, you will be able to buy eggs and milk.

Please be aware that you may require wellies, boots, a head torch or a rucksack. There is no phone signal at the hut but limited reception is available if you walk back up to the house. The walk to and from the hut requires a basic level of fitness.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

    We LOVED our stay here!

The place was beautiful and homely and had all the practicalities we could need! The land was secluded so it was the perfect antidote to London life which is just what we wanted - to spend time alone and relax!

Joy and her family were also really helpful and friendly and they have the most delicious farm eggs for sale!

We may very well come again! Brilliant! x

Even the rain could not take away the peace, beauty and tranquil surroundings of Thorn Farm Shepherds Hut, it cleaned my soul, just craving to go back. Really left that wow factor. Stayed in a yurt and a hotel during our week off and can truly say this was the best experience despite rain and mud this cannot deter from natures very own. A real medicinal dose for the soul. Joy was as her name depicted a joy, who thought of all those little extras which make the time spent there momentous (thank you Joy). Will be back in the spring.

A wonderful experience of off grid tranquility 09/09/2017

I have just spent 4 nights in the shepherd's hut in this idyllic setting with my lurcher Poppy. She had total freedom and after the 3 hour journey to get there, she took off like a maniac round the meadow and through the stream.
The holiday was really is like going back in time. although the rain tipped down each morning, (making me snuggle down under the duvet for that bit longer) the sun would pop out by about 10 and I was able to cut up some more wood to put under the shelter and get the fire ready and lit to cook lunch. I used the stream as my fridge for all water proof items and stored butter, cheese and dog food in my cool box in the plastic storage container just outside. A fridge is provided but as I was trying out living 'off grid' I decided to gave it a miss.
It was total bliss not to hear traffic and aircraft and just the peace I was looking for. The only sounds I heard were a neighbouring farmer on his quad bike twice a day checking his stock, The odd bellow of (I think) a bull a few fields away, a deer calling out a warning that we were approaching his patch while walking down by the pond, the resident cock pheasant calling his family to follow him and a couple of owls hooting to each other after dark. I never saw a sole in the 5 days I was there, no phone signal so total peace.
Taking a break here is well worth the experience, the hut is clean and comfortably furnished and equipped with all of the essentials.
There are lots of walks around the area but as they are steep and quite rugged I decided that as I was on my own, I would be in big trouble if I injured myself while out, being as there is no phone signal to call for help. So I stayed put in the bottom of this pretty little valley and enjoyed the sound of the stream tumbling over rocks. In the evenings I lite the wood burner and got myself a light meal and just laid back on the sofa in this cosy candle lite haven and reflected on life, and the changes I will make when I return home!
Joy arrived in her little 4x4 buggy to collect us at the agreed time and I took away with me an experience and memory I will never forget.

As two city dwellers, this place was exactly what we wanted and needed. Pure solitude, no noise at all except the babbling stream, so beautiful. Our Springer Spaniel loved the freedom (and splashing about!) in the huge field, woodlands and stream. Joy really has thought of everything; I'm a bit of a worrier, and when she told me all we needed to bring was clothes food and drink I wasn't too sure, but the Hut really does have it all, and it saves you hiking it all with you - crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils, chopping board, washing up liquid, bed linen, board games... all there ready. Pull-out bed was roomy and comfortable. We had a wonderful time, thank you so much.

Wonderful scenic location and very peaceful. The Fisherman's hut is well equipped and nicely finished off.
The hosts are wonderful and very accommodating towards guests needs.
We loved it and so did our 2 dogs as they had the freedom to roam. The stream kept our beer cold and the burner kept us cosy, whilst we cooked our food outside on the open fire pit.
The village of Dunster is a short drive away and is a lovely place to have a wander, eat and drink etc
We would definitely visit again and wished we had booked a longer stay

Directions

The best way to find the site is on the A39 to Dunster; come through the village taking the Luxborough and Nutcombe Bottom turning just outside of the village on the left hand side. Come up through the woods towards Luxborough and you will see us as you reach the top of the hill, on the right hand side. At the gate is a white beehive I use as my letter box and opposite there are two boxes with chickens painted on the fronts from which I sell my eggs.

The accommodation and surrounding area is ideal for walkers, mountain bikers and birdwatchers. There are lots of outdoor activities available in the area like canoeing, fishing and pony trekking.
