Somerset Reindeer Ranch: Fairy dome outside

General

  • Reindeer ranch and white-horse farm with an enchanted garden
  • A five-minute drive from Yeovil and 10 minutes from Montacute
  • Barbecue hut; plenty of places to walk around the site

If you’re the type of person who starts counting down to next Christmas on December 26th, you might very well be interested in bringing a bit of the yuletide season into your summer break with a stay at Somerset Reindeer Ranch.

This farm is home to a selection of Santa’s fave animals, plus it has a ‘unicorn’ for the kids to meet (you'll need to arrange this in advance though, to make sure it's not, ahem, out spreading magic elsewhere). Other activities that can be booked on arrival include My Little Pony, Peppa Pig and mermaid experiences for the kids and a more grownup luxury rolltop hot bath experience with rose petals and a glass of prosecco.

Stroll through the wide open spaces at the family-run park in search of Dasher, Blitzen and co, then settle in at the seating areas in the enchanted garden for picnics next to the firepit; there’s also a fancy barbecue hut for meals undercover should the weather be more Christmassy than summery. Summer vibes certainly prevail at the site's tiki bar – it's open at the weekend for chilled beers and ciders or smooth spirits (and fruit juices for the tiddlers).

Here to explore the countryside as well as the site’s lush grounds? The park is in prime position for touring Somerset and a couple of other counties as it’s five minutes’ drive from Yeovil and around half an hour from the Dorset and East Devon Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The site limits numbers, so guests will have a little pocket of isolation to themselves when staying here, and there are also ample spots to leave your car.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Minimum spacing of 5 metres between pitches.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Electric vehicles are welcome but will incur a £20 overnight fee and guests must provide their own charging equipment.

Lovely location, pitch and facilities were great. It did get a bit flooded outside the shower block after a huge rain storm, so take wellies just in case :). Very warm friendly welcome and owner happy to have a chat about all the animals and the animal care. Animals all seemed very happy and healthy and were very well looked after.

Hands down the best site we've ever stayed at. Nothing is too much for the amazing owners and the animals are just gorgeous! I can't wait to stay here again

    Disliked:

The only thing that could be improved would be somewhere in the showers to put your things/clothes and maybe move the dish washing undercover as I imagine it wouldn't be much fun if it were raining

The whole camping experience was excellent from arrival through to departure. We only stayed 3 nights but had a wonderful time.

We arrived at the gate with coded lock, rang the bell and were then greeted by the owners who were very friendly and welcoming. Sarah showed us to the pitches and gave us the choice of where we wanted to pitch the tent, by the horses, emus or reindeers. Not actually with them but by their enclosures. We chose the horses as our son wanted to take pictures to show his friends back home.

She then showed us around the campsite and facilities. Electric hook up was available with very long cable so no problem there. Toilets were clean and tidy as were the showers, both close to the pitch so no worries getting to them in the night.

The bar area was a nice touch with a table set up with saddles as seats to hop onto as well as a table and chairs. We had Pizza on the first night, and as it wasn't busy, were able to order and have it delivered to the tent, again great customer service and the pizzas were good too.

We didn't get chance to feed/pet the animals as we were busy exploring the local area, but guests can get up close if they wish at an extra cost.

There was also a swing in the garden area and mermaids visit to entertain, sadly we missed them too as it was end of season, but we did find some skunks that appeared at night in their pen towards the back of the garden

The resident turkey's, Winston and Clementine, were close to the entrance and happy to make an appearance if you get close to their pen.

Overall the visit was excellent with lots of animals to keep the stay interesting and entertaining. Our son, 11yrs, really enjoyed it, especially the cats he befriended who greeted us each time we woke up and when we returned from our local travels.

Highly recommend the Reindeer Ranch and will hopefully return at some point in the future.

The owners Dave and Sarah are lovely, can see how hard they work and the effort they put in to building and maintaining a beautiful and unique site.

The reindeer lodge was really unique and spacious. The built in barbecue is a great feature, made for a lovely dinner and cooked breakfast. Complete with its own garden area and fire pit, toasting marshmallows and drinking proper cider from the horse box bar makes a lovely end to the day.

The fairy garden for the kids is beautiful, looks magical lit up in the evening.
Our daughter made friends with some of the other kids there and it felt really safe and secure for them to play and go between the different families pitches. I think they spent more time at the bar than the adults. When they weren't cuddling the lovely site cats at least.
The horse box bar is a really quirky addition and we enjoyed sampling a few different ciders while we were there.
We didn't have the pizzas available but others did and they looked delicious.

The bathroom and toilet facilities are great too, nice hot shower, always clean and enough for the size of the site, never had to wait.

We loved the balance of being left to relax and explore the site at leisure and the fact the owners were available so quickly for anything we needed.

Small site, safe for kids to run around and play. So many lovely animals to see and stroke. Lots of space on the site with decking and fire pit provided. They do experiences such as reindeer feeding. Very friendly and kind hosts. Also a little bar in the evening so you can try the local cider. Very unique site!

    Disliked:

Only dislike was there was a few dog poos on the site which really need picking up by the owners (there were 4 dogs living there). I accept horse poo etc as it’s a farm, but there really shouldn’t be dog poo.

From the manager...

Thank you so much for staying with us, it was a pleasure to have you. We are really pleased that you enjoyed spending time at our magical ranch surrounded by horses, reindeer, emus, skunks and all the other animals. We pride ourselves on providing a safe friendly environment where children can explore and discover surprises, such as Betty and Wilbur the pigs, or Bandit the farm cat. Our team are here to ensure that your stay is super magical and we work very hard to ensure everything is clean and well kept. We conduct twice daily patrols to ensure the site is up to standard, and staff are briefed to never walk past an issue. As you will remember when we gave you a personal guided tour on your arrival, we said that if there is anything you are unhappy with please let a member of staff know whilst you are on site and they will go out of their way to rectify the issue to your satisfaction. If you had mentioned that you had spotted a couple of poos to one of the staff they would have dropped everything to ensure this was cleaned up immediately. We are really sorry that you decided to wait until you had left the site to mention this issue. But rest assured we have had one of our expert poo pickers out today, as we do everyday! We hope that you enjoyed sampling the local ciders from the horse box bar, and watching the sun set from the butterfly deck which was exclusively for your use. Warmest wishes for the future, from all of us at the Ranch.

Everything! The place is absolutely magical and I would recommend it to anybody, especially if you have small kids. The joy it gave me watching my daughter look through the peepholes in the barn to see the dragon and tell me that it can only be woken up by a wizard is priceless. The owners and the friendliest people you could fine and would do anything to help out and make your stay special.

Local attractions

Dotted with manors galore, the landscape around this farm is typically English in style. Mosey over to Montacute (10 minutes’ drive) to stare at a striking Elizabethan house set among lush grounds you might recognise from films like Sense & Sensibility, and toddle off to the 20th-century Arts and Crafts-era Tintinhull Garden (10 minutes) too.

There are plenty more attractions to amble towards in the local area as well, like the Fleet Air Arm Museum’s displays of military aircraft, aero engines and Royal Navy ships, the National Trust’s Palladian-style Stourhead estate (25 minutes) and the stunning scenery of Forde Abbey and Gardens (30 minutes).

The nature is a little wilder around Sutton Bingham Reservoir, which is a top spot for fishing, sailing or strolls (15 minutes), and in the woodlands, glades, ramparts and hamstone memorials of Ham Hill Country Park (10 minutes). With connections to the age-old stories of King Arthur and the Holy Grail, the hilltop Glastonbury Tor feels steeped in legend (25 minutes).

See more spectacular Somerset scenery at Cheddar Gorge (50 minutes), dropping by the Wookey Hole caves for some kid-friendly subterranean adventures while in the area (40 minutes).
