Reindeer Lodge exterior

General

  • Reindeer ranch and white-horse farm with an enchanted garden
  • A five-minute drive from Yeovil and 10 minutes from Montacute
  • Barbecue hut and wifi; plenty of places to walk around the site

If you’re the type of person who starts counting down to next Christmas on December 26th, you might very well be interested in bringing a bit of the yuletide season into your summer break with a stay at Somerset Reindeer Ranch. This farm is home to a selection of Santa’s fave animals, plus it has a ‘unicorn’ for the kids to meet (you'll need to arrange this in advance though, to make sure it's not, ahem, out spreading magic elsewhere).

Stroll through the wide open spaces at the family-run park in search of Dasher, Blitzen and co, then settle in at the seating areas in the enchanted garden for picnics next to the firepit; there’s also a fancy barbecue hut for meals undercover should the weather be more Christmassy than summery. Summer vibes certainly prevail at the site's licensed tiki bar – it's open at the weekend for chilled beers and ciders or cool cocktails (and fruit juices for the tiddlers) which you can take away to your accommodation or sip in the 'enchanted garden'.

Here to explore the countryside as well as the site’s lush grounds? The park is in prime position for touring Somerset and a couple of other counties as it’s five minutes’ drive from Yeovil and around half an hour from the Dorset and East Devon Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The site limits numbers, so guests will have a little pocket of isolation to themselves when staying here, and wifi covers the whole park for folk who like to stay connected. There are also ample spots to leave your car.

Please note

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Minimum spacing of 5 metres between pitches.

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Originally we were meant to stay at another campsite but we messed our booking up. We found Reindeer Ranch and managed to book in at last minute and I’m so glad we messed up our first booking! After a very stressful drive we were welcomed with a outside bar! Where I had some lovely cocktails to calm down with. The campsite owners were very friendly and accommodating. We pitched up and spent the night roasting marshmallows next to the fire pit next to our pitch and looking at the stars 😊 The next morning I booked some of the animal experiences to do with my partner, where we got to meet and feed a reindeer called dasher, some very cute 3 week old bunny’s called Cookie and Rose and my favourite bit meeting the fluffiest amazing dogs I have ever seen! I can’t recommend this place enough for family’s, even couples who want to get away and relax and animal lovers! Also the shower was lovely (I haven’t found one in my camping travels as nice as the ones they have there). Will definitely be coming again soon, hopefully for longer (as we only had a night there) and taking my mum too.

We all loved this place, the warm welcome, the beautiful animals, the ability to have animal experiences (we'll return for these). Our girls loved the enchanted garden, we loved it too but also loved the cocktail bar! The BBQ but was lovely and cosy. This was our favourite family weekend away.

There was nothing not to like about this site. It's definitely our favourite campsite so far. My 7 year old didn't even want to leave the site to explore the surrounding area. The site is secure with fully functioning toilets and showers that are kept clean and there is a cleaning cupboard so you can also help to keep it clean in the current covid climate or if it's not to your satisfaction. Recycling bins too, so you're not just chucking everything into one bin. The enchanted garden and toilet/shower/washing up area is beautiful and looks really pretty at night with the lights on. Sarah is both attentive but non intrusive and nothing is too much trouble. My daughter loved being surrounded by the reindeer and horses and watching them as well as the smaller animals in the enchanted garden and not forgetting the cats and dogs. My favourite was the donkey. We booked the unicorn experience for my daughter and she loved it, "best day ever" in her words and she can't wait to go back to school and tell her friends all about the unicorn and Santa's reindeers. Having our own fire pit and water tap was also a huge bonus. It's not a camping trip if we haven't roasted marshmallows at least once! All in all a magical stay.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike but constructive criticism: there was no hot water at the washing up station. This in no way impacted our stay as we just boiled a kettle on our stove.
Road noise can be heard, so if you're sensitive to noise it may not be for you. We live near a main road anyway, so it didn't bother us.

There's a lot to like. It's a small site, with staff that really can't do enough for you.

If you love animals, they're all around you: horses and reindeer are in the fields by the camping pitches, the farm cats and dog are likely to wander around to say hello during your stay. The enchanted garden kept all of our small children happy. The site gate is generally closed so there's no vehicles to worry about really, and the fencing allows the children to get close to the animals, but not too close.

The toilet and washing facilities are new, and regularly cleaned. Every pitch has running water, which is a massive bonus.

Very friendly staff. Basic amenities for staying in a farmers field. Big bag of firewood for £5. Security gate for getting onto the site. Small cocktail bar in a converted horse box if that’s your thing.

    Disliked:

Queuing to wash up at the one sink with no hot water. Extra toilets and showers needed for busy times.

We had a brilliant time the family who run the place are so friendly and attentive. They offer amazing experiences that you would be hard pushed to find anywhere else. Its Christmas everyday with the Reindeers so close by.
The whole atmosphere is relaxed and the added addition that every pitch has its own firepit is awesome. We just sat back toasted giant marshmellows (purchased on site) and drank some wonderful cocktails (purchased from the horsebox tiki bar on site).
The children could run around and play safely and see the animals without fear of them getting out of the site as the gates are closed all the time. The enchanted garden is wonderful and even tho I have boys not girls they loved it.
We will definately be back as Im sure it can only get better as they have only be open for camping for 2 months.

    Disliked:

Water could have been warmer at the washing up sink but this in no way effected our stay.

Local attractions

Dotted with manors galore, the landscape around this farm is typically English in style. Mosey over to Montacute (10 minutes’ drive) to stare at a striking Elizabethan house set among lush grounds you might recognise from films like Sense & Sensibility, and toddle off to the 20th-century Arts and Crafts-era Tintinhull Garden (10 minutes) too.

There are plenty more attractions to amble towards in the local area as well, like the Fleet Air Arm Museum’s displays of military aircraft, aero engines and Royal Navy ships, the National Trust’s Palladian-style Stourhead estate (25 minutes) and the stunning scenery of Forde Abbey and Gardens (30 minutes).

The nature is a little wilder around Sutton Bingham Reservoir, which is a top spot for fishing, sailing or strolls (15 minutes), and in the woodlands, glades, ramparts and hamstone memorials of Ham Hill Country Park (10 minutes). With connections to the age-old stories of King Arthur and the Holy Grail, the hilltop Glastonbury Tor feels steeped in legend (25 minutes).

See more spectacular Somerset scenery at Cheddar Gorge (50 minutes), dropping by the Wookey Hole caves for some kid-friendly subterranean adventures while in the area (40 minutes).
