  • Friendly 300-acre organic farm site with hill views in Somerset
  • A 25-minute drive from Longleat and 40 minutes from Yeovil and Bath
  • Café and farm shop on site; firepits to hire; barbecues permitted
Gather your friends, rally the family around or set out solo… at the friendly Bruton Meadow farm site, use its hilltop stone circle as your vantage point to pick out the south Somerset slopes and the Mendip Hills, and plan out your route through the Somerset countryside. A 25-minute drive from Longleat’s stately home, safari and cycling-friendly forestry, and 40 minutes from Yeovil and Bath, you’ll be well placed on the outskirts of Bruton with 300 acres of organic land rolling over Gilcombe Farm, including a quiet family camping area and dog park for canine family members. Climb to the site’s highest point and you might wonder whether you’ve stumbled into Stonehenge or reached the hilltop of Glastonbury Tor (half an hour’s drive for the real thing). The site’s very own stone circle is well set up for a gentle shindig above the countryside. The day's fun doesn’t end when the sun sets here – you can hire a firepit or set up your own barbecue on site. Either one is best laden with food from the on-site farm shop (selling produce direct from the farm), although there's also an on-site café to settle any unexpected hunger pangs and provide for times when you don't fancy cooking.

Local attractions

Safari tours, stately home and a sophisticated maze… Longleat (25 minutes’ drive) has it all. Get up close to hippos, monkeys and lions at the drive-through safari or stroll through gardens designed by Capability Brown. You may feel like a fly on the wall in the grand houses and gardens in this area, like the Georgian limestone and green eateries at The Newt in Somerset (10 minutes). Tick off two National Trust properties as you go, including the Palladian landscaped gardens at Stourhead (15 minutes) and the Elizabethan mansion at Montacute House (35 minutes). There are certainly no shortages of tributes to older times around, whether it’s the antique models at Haynes International Motor Museum (15 minutes), the hilltop legends of Glastonbury Tor (half an hour) or the arches of Wells Cathedral (half an hour). Perhaps climb to the top of King Alfred’s Tower (15 minutes) or take an extra-sophisticated sip of English tea at Sherborne Castle & Gardens (40 minutes). Hauser & Wirth Somerset (five minutes) has galleries full of impressive art, too. It's not just history that shows off but the natural world too…underground, forge your way through the caves at Wookey Hole (35 minutes) and the caverns of Cheddar Gorge (40 minutes).
