  • Burnham-on-Sea 15 minutes’s drive; Cheddar Gorge and Caves 25 minutes
  • Indoor pool, playground and fishing lake; clubhouse and licensed bar
Thinking of Somerset and need a base with lots of activities for all the family? You’ll never have a dull moment at Riverside Holiday Village, languishing by the River Axe in the Mendip Hills, because there’s just masses to do when you get there. Younger visitors can have hours of fun at the adventure playground, there’s a games arcade for older kids and a heated indoor swimming pool – so there’s always something for your offspring to be getting up to, even on rainy days. And while the kids are safely taken care of elsewhere, you adults can have your fair share of the fun too, with games of pool in the sports bar and regular themed entertainment (think ‘oompah’ bands, bratwurst and bingo) in the fully licensed Kingfisher Clubhouse. Spread out in the beer garden on warmer days, and maybe have a go at fishing (seasonal only) on lakes well stocked with game fish (please buy a pass from reception). If you fancy a walk, paths lead directly from the pitches to strolls alongside the river. When a day at the seaside beckons, Weston-super-Mare (10 minutes’ drive) answers the call with a huge sandy beach and lots of family activities like golf, Funland Theme Park and amusement arcades on the pier to keep everyone busy. Forgotten anything vital? There’s a well-stocked convenience store at reception.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Flat pitch Next to a river. I really liked the fact that there was only two toilets for a whole field of tents that were closely pitch together. I also really like the price of £50 per night and unable to use a swimming pool because it was fully booked. Lastly I really enjoyed paying £50 a night and having to pay £1 for 10 min use of the shower.

Disliked: I really liked having to leave this cramped campsite. And i disliked the fact I would not feel claustrophobic once I left.

From the manager: We're sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay, however we would like to point out that most of your 'dislikes' would have been known to you prior to booking (the price, charge for showers), but you chose to book anyway! Additionally, there is a larger toilet and shower block less than a minutes walk from the camping field (at the back of the clubhouse) which our reception team highlight on a map for campers upon their arrival.

Electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Lovely scenery, staff, facilities kept clean. We liked that we had a big pitch which did make a difference to our experience. The pitches were flat and maintained. Warden is seen driving around which we felt was very positive as he was keeping a close watch on the site..

Disliked: 2 showers and 2 toilets in the block is not enough for the amount of visitors on the camping site. Not fit for purpose really.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback - ref your comments regarding the utilities block; there is a larger toilet and shower block less than a minutes walk from the camping field (at the back of the clubhouse) which our reception team highlight on a map for campers upon their arrival.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Had a great time, the entertainment was good, prices reasonable, pitches big enough, and enough things on site to keep the kids occupied. Very clean all round site which was nice to see. I was dubious about playing Bingo but was very slick and fun, pretty sure only residents won the big prizes but that's prob me being cynical.

Disliked: Will be better camping when the hedges are bigger for wind protection, was quite exposed. Also, no idea why tribute acts are booked, on Sat the place was primed for a good dance after the song Bingo took place, and on came a tribute Britney Spears and the place went flat. Maybe licencing reasons, but I swear everyone in there would have been dancing with a good dj.

Electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Lovely welcoming site, with clean facilities. Kids have a great time in the parks and swimming pool. Good Club house is friendly, very helpful staff and locals and great entertainment. Won some money too! Had a great time 100% returning to this site.

Disliked: Swimming pool needs staffing as some older children were booming in, running and making others in the pool uncomfortable/ unsafe, should have a lifeguard so pool rules can be obeyed.

Local attractions

As well as Weston-super-Mare (10 minutes’ drive), there are other beachy options for family days out, including Burnham-on-Sea (15 minutes) with its vast stretches of sand backed by lots of shops and cafés. If you’d rather contemplate the sea from the comfort of a train, board the West Somerset Railway at Bishops Lydeard (45 minutes) for a jaunt through the Quantock Hills and along the coastline. Grab your walking boots and turn inland for days yomping in those very same Quantock Hills (40 minutes’ drive), or take on some of the challenging rock-climbing routes around the steep cliffs at Cheddar Gorge and Caves (25 minutes). Go deep underground on a caving expedition, and if that’s too hard core, take the kids to see the spectacular subterranean stalactites at Wokey Hole (35 minutes). If you feel the urge for a bit of culture, make for the historic (and tiny) city of Wells (40 minutes), where you can tour the flamboyant Gothic-style cathedral and moated Bishop’s Palace. Have another urban day out in Bristol (50 minutes), which draws people in for its zoo, the sleek Concorde at Aerospace Bristol and lively pub scene around the harbour.
