  • Family campsite 10 minutes’ drive from Weston-super-Mare in Somerset
  • Burnham-on-Sea 15 minutes’s drive; Cheddar Gorge and Caves 25 minutes
  • Indoor pool, playground and fishing lake; clubhouse and licensed bar
Thinking of Somerset and need a base with lots of activities for all the family? You’ll never have a dull moment at Riverside Holiday Village, languishing by the River Axe in the Mendip Hills, because there’s just masses to do when you get there. Younger visitors can have hours of fun at the adventure playground, there’s a games arcade for older kids and a heated indoor swimming pool – so there’s always something for your offspring to be getting up to, even on rainy days. And while the kids are safely taken care of elsewhere, you adults can have your fair share of the fun too, with games of pool in the sports bar and regular themed entertainment (think ‘oompah’ bands, bratwurst and bingo) in the fully licensed Kingfisher Clubhouse. Spread out in the beer garden on warmer days, and maybe have a go at fishing (seasonal only) on lakes well stocked with game fish (please buy a pass from reception). If you fancy a walk, paths lead directly from the pitches to strolls alongside the river. When a day at the seaside beckons, Weston-super-Mare (10 minutes’ drive) answers the call with a huge sandy beach and lots of family activities like golf, Funland Theme Park and amusement arcades on the pier to keep everyone busy. Forgotten anything vital? There’s a well-stocked convenience store at reception.

This is a very clean and friendly site with exceptional staff. Visitors praised the spacious, flat pitches and excellent facilities, including a clean swimming pool, play areas, and clubhouse with reasonable prices. Dog-friendly areas and a dog-friendly clubhouse were a highlight. Some guests noted that showers incur a small charge. Overall, a highly recommended family-friendly park.

Electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Very well presented and clean. A warm and friendly welcome from staff. Lovely clubhouse and swimming pool. Two great pubs near the entrance plus a curry house. Good location between Weston and Brean.

Disliked Big noisy rugby tour on the camping field. At £44 a night, the site is extremely expensive for what it is, which is a shame. No free wifi. £1 for a shower. There are some bigger sites in Brean at around £30 a night.

Electric grass tent or motorhome pitch (large)

Liked Spacious pitch with really good ablutions. Cleaned everyday and very well stocked . The washing up facilities was really good and the sluice for the porta loo was god send. The club house was very good so was the entertainment children’s and adults. The food was very good and the staff was very friendly and nothing was too much trouble .

Disliked On our visit we had a rugby team from Towcaster staying in the same field as us . Friday and Saturday the noise was horrendous with music and people screaming. This not only affected us but all the young families around us some with very young children. They were told to quieten down several times but this wasn’t the case. On Sunday evening it was lovely and quiet and very calming.

Electric grass tent or motorhome pitch (large)

Liked Large pitches, very clean and tidy showers and toilets blocks. We stayed at Easter weekend and there was lots of fun and entertainment for the children. Swimming pool is great because you can book for only adult swimming. Local bus service outside site very busy. Families waiting with a few dogs were told no to getting on because the bus was too full.

Disliked There is only two showers on the camping site, but saying that it was very busy when we stayed, and I didn’t have to wait to use them.

Liked Such a clean site. Nice large flat pitches. Have to pay a £1 for shower but that didn't bother us. Bathroom facilities were always clean. All staff were so friendly couldnt fault the customer service at all.
The site itself is small, the entertainment venue is small so at busy times you have to get there early for a seat, however the staff are so good at making sure everyone has a seat. They make people make room and fit you on a table e.g. 2 people sitting at a 6 seater table they ask if they mind others joining that table.

Disliked I'd recommend checking the weather before you go! If it's going to be windy and you're camping its hard to sleep as obviously its so loud as there is no trees/bushes etc to block out wind. Found this to be a really windy area compared to being out of the park itself.
It's a really small compact site. Could also do with a park for toddlers.
Foods a bit overpriced in the venue.

Local attractions

As well as Weston-super-Mare (10 minutes’ drive), there are other beachy options for family days out, including Burnham-on-Sea (15 minutes) with its vast stretches of sand backed by lots of shops and cafés. If you’d rather contemplate the sea from the comfort of a train, board the West Somerset Railway at Bishops Lydeard (45 minutes) for a jaunt through the Quantock Hills and along the coastline. Grab your walking boots and turn inland for days yomping in those very same Quantock Hills (40 minutes’ drive), or take on some of the challenging rock-climbing routes around the steep cliffs at Cheddar Gorge and Caves (25 minutes). Go deep underground on a caving expedition, and if that’s too hard core, take the kids to see the spectacular subterranean stalactites at Wokey Hole (35 minutes). If you feel the urge for a bit of culture, make for the historic (and tiny) city of Wells (40 minutes), where you can tour the flamboyant Gothic-style cathedral and moated Bishop’s Palace. Have another urban day out in Bristol (50 minutes), which draws people in for its zoo, the sleek Concorde at Aerospace Bristol and lively pub scene around the harbour.
