  • Small adults-only glamping site in an ancient orchard in Porlock Vale
  • A mile from Selworthy and 10 minutes' drive from Porlock Weir
  • Set on a working farm within the National Trust's Holnicote Estate
Been beavering away looking for a place to stay in Exmoor National Park? If you're after something scenic that's close to the coast, then this small adults-only glamping site in Somerset's Porlock Vale could strike a chord. Orchard Escapes Exmoor is set in a two-acre orchard, the units are off-grid and run entirely off solar power. You should feel quite cosy indeed, as each glamping unit (sleeping two people) comes with a private woodfired hot tub as well as an outdoor firepit with logs provided. Just a short walk away within the orchard, there are private individual toilets and shower rooms for each unit. These facilities are heated and include a flushing loo, shower, toiletries, towels and bathrobes each. Orchard Escapes Exmoor is set on a working beef and sheep farm that lies within the National Trust-run Holnicote Estate, a 12,000-acre expanse of agricultural land, moors and forests. Back in 2020, a handful of beavers was reintroduced into a fenced area of woodland a short distance away, and it's hoped that by building dams and gnawing wood they'll make this already rural area even more wild in years to come. This site is just under a mile from the gorgeous village of Selworthy, well-known around these parts for its tea room and the views from its hilltop church. The coast is similarly close by – the harbour at Porlock Weir is about 10 minutes' drive away, with Porlock's village shops handily positioned half-way if you want to pick up provisions en route (perhaps the local oysters if you're feeling fancy).

Bramley shepherd's hut

Liked: Beautiful, well maintained and equipped shepherds hut. Everything you could need and ask for. Perfect location, private wood fired hot tub, fire pit and good supply of logs included. Private wet room with towels, bathrobes and shampoo etc too. We opted for the full English breakfast basket as an extra which had plenty to feed two hungry hikers.

Disliked: Nothing!

Victoria shepherd's hut

Liked: The hut was cosy and very well equipped - thank you so much Paula for the delicious gluten free brownie too which was a very thoughtful touch. Facilities were spotless and the Faith in Nature toiletries were an added bonus. The wood fired hot tub was very lovely, and the setting very tranquil too. Would definitely recommend, particularly great if you also want to explore the local area (Porlock, Porlock Weir, Dunster Castle etc). Thank you!

Local attractions

The surrounding Somerset coast is strewn with scenic places of interest. To get a good outlook over it all, climb to the top of Dunkery Beacon (10 minutes' drive) for panoramas over the Bristol Channel, or set your sights on Minehead (10 minutes) or Watchet (20 minutes) for a lazy day of strolling about and unwinding by the coast. For a total contrast, head to the sheer emptiness of the long pebbly beach at Bossington (10 minutes), or, for somewhere sandy, over into Devon to try Combe Martin (45 minutes) at low tide. Sporty excursions – or, if you're not quite that competitive, agreeably active times – are also easy to come by in this part of the world, as nearby Exmoor Adventures (10 minutes) stand ready to sort you with archery, coasteering, mountain biking, kayaking and paddleboarding explores. Exmoor Riding (five minutes) and Burrowhayes Farm (five minutes) are also on hand for locally-led equestrian outings.
